Hi

I need some advice on buying a lorry, I have been looking to buy a lorry because my mare won't get in a trailer yet she is eager to get in my friends lorry, I have a couple of problems with buying a lorry and one is that I have a repaired broken shoulder and I struggle with the ramps I just about menaged the ramp of an LT50 but the problem with this was the size of horse it would take. I need one that will take one 15hh and occassionally my friends horse as well which is 15.2hh but I also need to be able to take my husbands big!!!
16.2hh in a emergency eg go to the vets or move house she weighs approx 800kg. Could I get her in LT35 LT50 or master in emergency I don't really need a big 7.1/2ton for one horse.

Hi Christine
I don't know anything about the boxes you mention, but if you know anyone who has one, perhaps you could get them to bring it over to you so you could properly try it out. Get the horse in and take for a drive see how it handles. Must admit I prefer a bigger lorry for stability and the weight issue. There are some lorries out there that have very easy ramps, almost up and down with one hand (mines not one of those), plus of course some with power ramps too.

Our 7.5t has a very easy ramp, you can fling it up with one hand (and definitely remember not to hang on to it otherwise you'd be carried up into the air with it!). But other things to consider would be hydraulic ramps (make sure they come with a manual over ride as well though just in case the hydraulics break).

Alternatively have you tried loading/traveling her in a Equitrek trailer. I know a few people who've had horses that won't go in normal trailers who travel happily in one of those. But I also know of a couple of people whose horses won't go in trailers and don't like 3.5t boxes either... I think its a space thing.

Christine

It depends on how much you want to spend on the lorry.
