I thought I'd ask the experts here, as I know I'll get straight to the point answers!
There is a horse that I am very interested in buying. When I looked through his pedigree on all breeds, it appears that his grandmother is the same mare on both sides of his parentage! I've not seen this before.
What do you guys feel about such close in breeding? Do you think it would cause problems and if so what?
The Soul would have no Rainbow....If the Eyes had shed no Tears.
you will find that some horses are actually mother and son, brother and sister and so on. some people don't care about in breeding while other don't like it. some horses are closely line bred back in their bloodlines and some are closer.
it's really up to you to deside whether you are comfortable with it or not.
If the grandmother was a nice mare, well bred and a good producer, then there is no problem at all. I breed SEs and it is very common for some horses to appear numerous times in the pedigree; if you like them and are happy with what they produce you are more likely to get a similar result from the breeding than if the pedigree is a mish-mash of totally unrelated bloodlines which all produce different attributes.
So, in summary, no problem if she is a nice mare, go for it.
