What a great Video !!!
a proper breed show. no fake terrified posing, so the horse can be judged as a breeding horse, and all look like types you could , do ridden/hunt/jump/breed ie a proper horse !!!!
What would be so wrong with going back to that style ??? |

This for the comments; sorry I didn't realise Rog elbowed his way in!
This was the AHS National show in 1985 (when it was held at Ascot). This is the Veteran stallion class! These are very famous, working stallions (before the days of AI) so oh my goodness, aren't they well behaved in a tiny ring.
In order they were trotted out: Cherif (handled by one of the first International handlers - we were bemused at the time about the way he stood the horse up!), Mikhan of Pulpits (to me he is still the best Arab I've ever seen, and his movement WOW, but he moved better in the Championship), sorry, I'm not sure who the third horse is, the fourth is Hanif (handled by Mr Upton in wellies!).
The class was won by Mikhan, Cherif second (did you notice he wasn't bitted?) and Hanif third. Mikhan went on to be Res BNC behind Ralvon Elijah before Ralvon was exported to Australia.
Roger (a Khan grandson) wears Khan's in-hand bridle whenever he is shown.

Simply beautiful to watch. That is the reason I fell in love with the Arabian as a little girl. Sometimes the old ways are the best, pity everything gets spoiled over time by some greedy, unloving, uncaring people. Maybe if more people saw the Arabian shown like that they would once again become popular. |

Brings tears to your eyes doesn't it. It used to be wonderful and the applause and cheers were when they were finishing heir show and merited it. We used to go to Ascot and saw some fantastic horses that are now legends. Lovely to see our Ben's Dad Hanif in his prime. By the way what s the second clip? |

That was 2 years before my first National Arab Show - just as a spectator; I didn't compete until it moved to Malvern. 1987; I had my first Anglo, Autumn Light, and that day I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!
Video clip - Beautiful horses being shown as horses with that lovely arched neck and poncey trot. Handlers dressed as horsemen or women not nightclubbers. A calm and relaxed atmosphere in the ring; the stallions are behaving impeccably. Mikhan of Pulpits - without knowing the year I couldn't have put a name to him but was going to ask you if he was a relation of Mikeno, my Autumn's grandsire. I agree with you that he is absolutely stunning. I don't think I ever saw him - the only Mikeno son I can recall in the Veteran class was Paguerra in 1989 and I remember being bitterly disappointed when he wasn't forward in 1990.
I used to love watching the Veteran classes at Malvern - I would compete on the Thursday with Garnet and then go back on the Saturday to watch, always with a tear in my eye. The thing I remember from 1987 was Burkan bowing in the ring - years later a friend had his son Kantaka to breed her own dynasty - the only stallion I have ever ridden.
Happy days indeed - if only things were like that now. Thank you so much for sharing.
I also enjoyed galloping up that stubble field - it's a hell of a size! I began to wonder if Roger was superimposed on a rolling background, like the cars in old films! |

Garnet, yes Mikeno was Mikhan's sire. I absolutely adored Mikhan.....such a sweet boy. As teenagers we were allowed to turn him out/bring him in (just in a rope halter). He was the kindest stallion.
That is a lovely a big stubble field! I don't know how that video attached itself but Rog says he's allowed as Khan is his grandad!

So enjoyed the step back in time, I don't show but had a magical day that I will allways remember at Northern Arab Show held at Yorkshire Show Ground, 1986/87 maybe. I was already smitten and desperate to see my mares half bother a stallion he was magnificent as they all were and kindly handled. |

I thought it looked like there was a tiny bit of shanking creeping in with the first grey, wasnt keen on it. Loved the chestnut that trotted out 2nd! The 2nd grey trotted beautifully too apart from the little break into canter but it wasnt doing anything silly. You could still judge its movement properly. They look soo much better when shown like that. Their faces look so gentle and kind....attributes that a judge should look for imo. |

Absolutely, Mandy - I've never seen anything move like Khan. 100% straight, active, no knee action, true Arabian action. |

I remember going to see Mikhan as a potential husband for my pony mare. Would have been in early 80s. He was beautiful , I also remember a young grey stallion there. Who was he Caryn?

The grey stallion in the early 80s was a little Egyptian horse, Muzeero (El Mongi x Muzri). he was gelded at about 8 years old as he was a worrier - he lived a very happy life until his late 20s/early 30s as a gelding.

I was quite proud of myself for recognising a Mikeno son! Of course Roger is allowed - he is just as gorgeous as Khan!
If you still have the catalogue I would love to know who the others are - I prolonged my trip down Memory Lane by looking at entries in 1987 to 1990! |

Muzeero thats it, I just couldn't remember. My pony mare had previously been bred to Blue Mint?? I think and had a very pretty crabbet looking partbred colt. So I was tempted to breed her again to Khan. In the end I bought a 3 y.o. pure bred chestnut mare that was in livery at Heron Stream Stud. Oh those were the days lol

Garnet, I haven't got the catalogue but will watch the entire video as I've got the whole veteran class and the stallion championship, not just the snippet I posted and will try to get the full results.

Wow that amazing, he looks like my boy, Magic, when I looked at the vid, my first thought was look at the flares! Did we really where them! And I noticed the second chestnut, and liked him, I can believe he related. Maybe theres hope for me and Harepies Magic Mikeno. |

Thank you so much for posting this video Caryn. I had never seen Mikhan in action although did see him out in the field at Pulpits once or twice. It brought tears to my eyes to see my gelding Hullaballoo's sire moving with that amazing floating trot. No wonder he won the class. Not for nothing was Mikeno known as the "dancing stallion" and he certainly passed his legendary action on to his progeny. Hullaballoo is now 25 and no longer does much floating but in his younger days when ridden he would from time to time go into that special other gear that made you feel you were flying. Entirely agree that showing methods in those days was so much better, for horses and spectators, than what we see now. How old was Khan at that show? PS. I too enjoyed the canter on the stubble...

The full results of Class 17, Veteran Stallions (AHS National Show 1985): 1st, 660 Mikhan of Pulpits aged 19 2nd 663 Cherif aged 17 3rd 665 Hanif aged 23 4th 662 Rodan El Azar 5th 664 El Zaeed 6th Autumn Dragonfly 7th Dennybeck Danny
British National Champion: 627 Ralvon Elijah Resv BNC: 660 Mikhan of Pulpits
Unfortunately the announcer missed out a place number so I have assumed he got the number wrong but mentioned all the horses; if not, 5th-7th are actually a place lower and 5th hasn't been announced at all.
AllBreedPedigree isn't working at the moment so I haven't been able to check I'd heard the announcer correctly.
