Some of you may remember that I rescued/bought a grey arab mare off the back of a meat lorry, with her next stop being the slaughter house.

She was emaciated (the picture was taken 2/3 weeks after arrival)and had a healing broken neck. Well I would like to tell all that she is very fat and very happy now. Her neck will stay deformed but it doesnt appear to affect her in any way, and as long as she is happy thats all that matters. She is a very sweet mare and put up with a lot of poking prodding and needles in all manner of places from the vet in those first few weeks. However she seemed to very easily get stressed, for example if food was apparent (I can understand that) and if her best friend (my young stallion) was not in her immediate vision. Then as the weather has deteriated although she did nothing wrong or bad it was obvious she did not enjoy being stabled, although over the last month of only enclosing her for an hour or so she is improving dramatically. Well having got to know her and the way she behaves I decided to try and find out if I could a bit about her background. This was hard as I didnt want people I contacted to think I was accusing them of her condition. So off I set armed with her previous registered owners details and a 2/3 yrs missing before she came to me. It seems her life has for a large part been an extremely unhappy one. She was bred by Gucci, now we all know the awful conditions that these horses found themselves in and that a lot were auctioned off when something was finally done about it. She was bought by a good and reputable person who kept her well and bred a couple of foals from her, then as often happens she was sold on to a stud not in england, who also bought quite a few very expensive and well bred horses to 'start out'. As is often the case maybe they became bored of the horses, I did find out that the husband worked away practically all the time and the wife was an alcoholic. Anyways, all the horses became extremely ill, were not fed and starving and a gentlemen (not particularly an arab person but had a few horses) knew about this and went to buy one (as it turned out it was Anna). The horses had not been out of the stables for a year and they had to get a mini digger in to dig the muck out of the door ways before the horses could be released. All the horses were sold off to various homes, this gentleman bought Anna and took her home. He got her well and he too bred a foal from her, but with work commitments and his family growing up and showing less interest in helping him he decided some of the horses had to go. She was sold to a millionaire who he thought would give her a perfect home...........after about a yr or so (he can't remember exactly) this man was convicted of child abuse and jailed. It is difficult to know at this point if the horses were already neglected or if the neglect came about after he was convicted, either way many were dead and the ones remaining were in pitiful condition. It seems likely that the police or other officiating unit seized the animals, and also very likely they were soon or immediately auctioned off. Hence her ending up on a meat wagon. No one seems to know when or where she broke her neck (it wasnt the meat lorry as it was semi healed) Having found all this out I can see the tears in her eyes, I can understand the panic at the sight of food, her loathing of stables, and her upset if a friend goes where she can't see it.And for all that she has remained sweet, friendly and loving. Its a cruel, cruel, cruel, cruel world.

My goodness.
No wonder she goes into herself when she 'thinks'
Well done you, on persisting to find out more about her. I hope she has many happy years with you, without 'having' to reproduce just because probably, she has a great pedigree.
Thanks Very Much for the Update. |

Thanks Pat, she is extremely well bred, and if nature intends it would be nice to have a foal from her before she is too old, but if nature doesnt she knows she has a home here, where she will never be hungry and will receive all the medical care she should ever need. There is now a rule down the yard, 'Anna is fed FIRST' as I can't bear to see the distress on her face. There really has been no excuse in her life, she is a good doer and idiot proof to handle. |

The poor, unlucky girl; you wouldn't think that so many bad things could happen to one horse in so many different homes.
Congratulations for finally giving her a home for life and for understanding her needs.

What a terrible story, thankfully with a happy ending.
Poor, poor mare - some horses are unfortunate to have suffered once through cruelty or lack of care - this poor girl seems to have suffered time and time again, its unbelievable , and awful to think of how she suffered
Thank God you found her Donna, its wonderful that at last she has a home where she will be loved and want for nothing - and what is so humbling is how through all of this she has retained her sweet character. What a dear mare, I'd love to know more about her and see some pics of her looking better, bless her heart (and yours !) |

What a horrific life the poor girl has had. Sometimes it seems the gentlest nature gets the worst treatment. It makes my blood boil to think of owners with millions who couldn't give a stuff about their animals. It's why most of us will never have money, it all goes to the horses. Thank god you found her. She will thank you in ways that money can never buy. It must make your heart swell to watch her improve and begin to trust again. Wishing you both much happiness. |

Well done It's so wonderful that she has you now, and a life of ease, instead of what nearly happened--death in the slaughter house after a miserable existence. So many horses, and other animals are never saved from this. |

Just goes to show it isn't necessarily the people with the fattest wallets that give the best care!

Dear God what a tragic life, thank goodness you were able to save her, and I truly hope that she continues to recover both emotionally and physically and has many contented years ahead of her. At least there were chapters in her previous life where she was cared for, amongst the horror.
Be quite happy to see photos of her looking plump and muddy... |

Thankfully you found her.
What a sad tale, it makes you wonder why people have horses???? I really dont understand it at all.
I look at my horse in the field and he has never ever known hardship, I bred him and he will stay with me for the rest of his life. I just couldnt sell him or even loan him out for fear of him ending up like your poor mare.
Good luck with her int he future I am sure she will be loved and looked after by you the way we should all look after our horses and not treat them like a commodity or something to sell whe have hah enough of them.

How very sad. A happy ending for her, and bless you for your kind heart. Awful to think of all the others suffering like that too.
At the moment I am keeping an eye on 4 Spanish horses kept down the road from us. Grass is sparse round here so my 2 are continually stuffing down hay, which is quite expensive. These poor Spanish horses are on very restricted grazing and I don't see much evidence of regular feeding. Sometimes they get a bale of "regain" - straw plus a bit of hay. Most of the time they stand there looking sad and hungry. I have left a big bag of apples outside the gate with a friendly note, so the owners know someone is interested. They are not in any way emaciated, but are losing condition, just I know they SHOULD have more fibre to be happy.
Why oh why do people have these animals and not care about giving them the basics? What pleasure can there be in ownership like this?
So pleased little Anna is OK now. |
