Hi, I bought my boy six years ago when he was 17yrs (now 23yrs - obviously!). Ever since then I have tried to find out a bit more about his past and particularly about his brand. I haven't got a clue who branded him and why. I'm his fifth owner and I guess because of this his history has faded over the years. Apparently he qualified for Wembly with his dressage and SJ. He's also done a bit of XC but not a lot. This information came from his 3rd owner who amazingly still lived at the same address and so I was able to get hold of her. Unfortunately, and I don't know why, I didn't think to ask her if she knew anything about the brand...yeah I know, how thick am I??!! I tried to get hold of her again, but she had moved by that time. His last owner didn't know anything. His details are: Stable name - "GUNNER" Registered name - GRENADIER GUARDSMAN - foaled 20 April '82 Sired by - GRENADIER (GENERAL GRANT/BLUE RHAPSODY) Dam - GAMILA (WAZEL GERWAZY/TAHITI) Breeder - Mrs JE Beck He's lived in Hertfordshire, Oxforshire, Buckinghamshire, Devon and now Yorkshire. He's chestnut/white blaze/four socks
THE BRAND IS THE LETTER "R" WRITTEN INSIDE A SHIELD.
Several people including an FEI vet say they have only seen this kind of brand abroard. But his papers don't say he's ever lived abroad. Having said that, I guess he may have been with an owner who didn't offically change the ownership on his papers, the owner before me didn't bother. However, the vet also said there's a small possibility he was aloud to roam his lordship's land - whatever that means? and so may have been branded.
Help! - Vicki.

Wonder if these are branded too???
Also have you put in a search for brands?? I vaguely remember someone doing this sometime ago.
Not much help, sorry. |

Hiya, The AHS have never heard of an Arab being branded apparently. His brand has never been mentioned in his description on his registration certificate either. Vicki |

There was a chestnut arab stallion in Chobham that used to be kept behind my fields with an R brand on his bum and he would be similar age around 20 ish I think. Help Tamilla - I think she knows who ownes him or where he went. |

It's on his left side hind quarters.
His previous owner went to school in Guildford - not a millian miles away from there. She was 14 at the time. |

Hey AkramGold,
Got a good picture of my boy, also of his brand. Trouble is I don't know how to post a photo! When hubby wakes up (dozing on sofa!) he might be able to work out how to do it, but no guarentee.

Any idea of who owned him in Oxfordshire Vicki? I could put out an appeal for information in the Oxfordshire column I write for Central Horse News. Would be useful to talk to you to do that and I could use a photo if you could email me one. The next edition is out in December. |

Hi Roseanne,
He belonged to a Mr Robert Chaplin in Thame, Oxfordshire. Looking at his Registration Certificate it shows he bought him from the breeder as a yearling. I'll email you with a photo.

Hi Vicki, It's roseanne_edwards@journalist.com (the space is an underscore)- but I'll send you one so you can just reply. I'll see what I can find out about Robert Chaplin. It's not a name I recognise. What's Gunner's breed mix? |
