Hi, next week my horse is having 2 wolf teeth removed and the vet mentioned that he needs to have his teeth shaped with an electric rasp as he has an exaggerated smile, Eric is 5yrs in march, has anyone had this much work done to their horse at a young age? or heard of an exaggerated smile?
I also am having my lots teeth checked next week so fingers crossed all is well, first time for yearling and 4 year old.. My mare who is 13 had just the last few days started quidding(sp) but is more than happy when ridden with bit and in herself.. Last year nothing was done as her teeth were fine so maybe a sharp one in there at the mo..
Ive heard of exaggerated smiles in elderly horses. Where as you can imagine with increased age the teeth in the middle are well worn, giving a smile appearance. Perhaps this has happened in your horse due to uneven wear perhaps due to an uneven jaw, apparently common in arabs. Have a chat with your dentist, mine always let me put my hands in and feel whats going on etc.
I would prob hold fire for now on having a 41/2 yr olds 'bite' corrected as the incisors are still cutting in and trying to balance up naturally. Some horse due to the way they are conformed can have a 'wedge' mouth or a smile...I have only personally done bite work with a electric rasp only as I do not agree with burring their molars down as all too often it is done excessively. And the horse I have done bit work on are a lot older than your lad. If you have a trusted equine dentist talk to them, if not look up World wide equine inc on google and have a look at some case studies to get an idea of some problems associated with the incisors.Good luck, if you need any more info PM me.
