Waiting 5 weeks on Bo's new saddle so I dont want to not ride and theres only so much lunging you can do without doing the wall of death and ending up dizzy.....so Ill get to the point....Im going to ride him bareback tomorrow with a leadrope to grab onto incase he sees a rogue blade of maneating grass and turns on his heels like he does from time to time...wish me luck

To be honest its just because I dont want to lay him off for 5 weeks til the saddle is made as they took his measurements to fit his shape now and after 5 weeks he might change too much with no work and I dont want him to explode when he does eventually get his new saddle.Im not as brave or as fit as I was but needs must

Hi

First 2 weeks I had Cinny I took her for walks, but they got a bit boring and as was waiting for saddle started riding her bareback.

Actually found that she seemed to behave better bareback than with saddle.

When start getting her fit again will prob do the first short rides bareback as it's so nice and comfy. Also as Fee says also great for balance.

Good luck

I used to ride bareback when I was a teenager, if I had cleaned the tack ready for a show the next day I would use the daily bridle and go off on my normal hack BB. Think it did wonders for balance, always had to lengthen my stirrups next day!

Well I managed to ride Bo bareback but we only managed about 20 mins as my legs were a bit sore and Ive now got cramp in me old left butt cheek!Nonetheless he was great and we even had a couple of trots(ancored to my neckstrap)He still seems a bit stiff in his shoulder in trot but he trots up fine from the ground I hope this will ease off and its not me being a lump on his back....Ta ta for now.

I used to ride my mare bareback with a halter and lead another when going out to the mare's field, where I used to keep her. Used to canter up the track, with the other mare following behind on a long lead rope. Was great fun, but my mare was completely trustworthy and I had great confidence in her. She is not rideable any more and I have not yet tried this on the stallion!! Great for your seat and balance though.

....I've just got out of a two week stay in hospital because we were bareback....

If you are going out on the roads have you consdered using your bridle for control... if your horses does anything silly your could find yourself in the same mess I was in....

I was in my feild with a rope halter and reins - nothing new... Raz is used to it now and has always been well behaved...
as we were walking around the feild... my pony who was walking with us (as usual) thought it wouold be fun to have a gallop - as he shot off, I kept raz walking and turned him away from the charging lunatic...
pony came round for a second time to try and get us to join in... Raz was a star and remained in walk but I could feel him tense up through his back - he was desperate to go...
I turned him in and was just about to dismount when the flying lunatic came round for the third time...
Raz was off - totally caught me off guard -
I asked raz to steady down -
HE STOPPED, I FLEW about 4 metres over his head....
Pain - Ambulance - hospital for 2 weeks....

Four weeks on I'm still in agony.....

I will ride bareback again, but only in my enclosed school without anyone trying to entice us into to a race and only with my bridle....

Just becareful.....

Kirsy that sounds awful hope you feel better soon.I wouldnt attempt to ride him without a bridle and we were on a country road with little or no traffic.I dont fancy trying it in afield as Bo gets on his toes whenever he feels soft ground beneath him.I think the people who owned him previously probably galloped him around as we can have problems staying in a nice controlled canter but Im working on that too as Ive only had him for 4 months. He actually bolted with me about a month ago and it took ages to stop him and when I did I was shaking like a leaf whilst he wanted to go again.Once I get my new saddle Im going to knuckle down to some schooling(which I hate)and possibly some lessons(which will terrify me) OH and I have just had a discussion about Bo and he said if hed known that Bo was going to be such a hassle(saddle probs)he would have insisted on me buying a "normal brown horse" whatever that means....cant write what my reply was or Ill get told off

Poor you Kirsty - that's a long time in hospital for these days! You must have been quite badly injured.

Amazing video Khu'lilah!

We used to ride bareback all the time as kids, jumping, scrambling over mounds, through rivers etc - but it has to be said, the nerve doesn't stay quite the same as an adult. Perhaps it's because our imaginations are more realistic about what might happen!

Nikki I'm absolutely sure without a shadow of a doubt that there was only a fraction of the traffic on the roads, it wasn't so aggressive or fast and it was much safer to ride out years ago.

thank you... you can get bareback pads can't you??? they help with a bit of friction to stop you sliding around so much...

Cheers Pixie but promise I am very careful, omly riding with company and only at quieter times of the day and always with a hat on.Thing is Bo is only 14.2 in his heels(shod) so he feels safe enough and he is great in traffic and I always wear my fluorescent vest....But then again,if we all wanted to be 100% safe,we would never go near horses at all!
