Hello. I found this site whilst searching for Michael Pitt Rivers' Tollard Park stud only to find that it doesnt exist any more and sadly Mr Pitt Rivers has died. I have a 30 year old grey gelding that came from this stud. I've had him since he was a 3 y o and he's still going strong although keeping weight on him is a challenge these days. I retired him a couple of years ago. His sire was Nasib. Does anyone have one any older?

Lovely to hear from you , we bought Mafida from the stud dispersal some years back in foal to Talquah Jesse with a colt foal at foot by Sa'an. sadly Mafida is no longer with us but Ma'an the colt foal is now a happy stallion at the grand old age of 20,and to the best of my knowledge Masjedda the Talquah Jese baby is still alive and living in Devon. Not too many about now, is there?? Best wishes Libby. |

HI Jude2
My wife and I have a 31 year old pure bred arab KIBA. She is a grand old lady, still full of spirit and teaching our two year old respect. She has lost more than 50% of her teeth and those that are left are down to the gum. We have to make sure everything is soaked and reduced to a paste. At the start of the year she lost a lot of weight and we were convinced that the end was close, which we know will happen, but will do our best ensure she is given every chance. We lost our 29 year old last year
We found a web site http://www.veteran-horse-society.co.uk/ and my wife gilly emailed them for help, as our vet lacked experience in such an old horse. Gilly contacted Julianne Aston Chief Executive of the Charity and she suggested a diet plan. The differance in KIBA was slow at first by week 5 the differance was very noticable and we are 100% sure she will continue putting weight on ready for another winter. Kiba lives out and gets very stressed if brought in, the natural life keeps her happy. We ensure that she is rugged as much as possible to prevent calorie loss.
morning feed
2 lbs 16+ 1 lb build up cubes 1 lb pasture nuts half bucket fibergy everything soaked above food level for at least 6 hours
evening feed
2 lbs 16+ 1 lb build up cubes 1 lb pasture nuts 1 level scoop mineral supliment 1/2 scoop garlic 1 scoop Yea Sac pro biotic 2 tsp cod liver oil 1/3 mug veg or soya oil
The diet may seem a lot but Kiba eats it fine and as I said is working. would recommend getting teeth checked as things can change rapidly when older.
all the best with your old chap
regards Stuart

My mare, Crystal Atlantis, is now 20 years old, and is still acting like a 2 year old. I had the great honour to meet Mr Pitt-Rivers about 10 years ago, when Crystal and myself were still struggling to get on with each other. He told me never to try to master her, but to have an equal partnership, and never to try to break her spirit...words I will never forget, and have proved invaluable down the years since. I was struck by what a lovely person he was, with a deep love and understanding of these wondeful horses. His passing has marked the end of the era of truly great horsemen.
Tollard Park Stud, though was meant to be up for auction, as the people I bought Crystal off bought Shogun, or a share in Shogun, and he was standing there the last I heard...don't know what has happened since, but it was being put back as a private arab stud. |

Hi Pat I think Kazema is the grandmother to the stallion Elite who was sired by White lightning and out of kazemas daughter kazminta. Is this right. |

Yes Joanne, thats right, so we have the right mare here. Is she still well and alert?? Bless her.
As regards the oldest british arabian, I have no idea, I expect it all depends on if owners let the stud book know that their horse is deceased or not, and then recorded. Its something I have not thought about before. Does anyone know if there is a proceedure for this??
I bet somebody on here will come up with the history of some really old ones though.
Interesting thread Jude, Thanks. |

Further to the Tollard Park enquiry mum has done some dredging round her memory and her mates. It seems that someone called Kay (sorry don't know the surname) who worked at one time for the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, heard that Tollard Park was up for lease by tender. Apparently this lady sat up all night putting a business plan together and then rushed it down to the agents dealing with all the paperwork. The last we heard was that she had got the lease on Tollard Park as the people who sold Crystal to us, were supposed to be going into partnership and co leasing the stud with this other lady. I do recall seeing Shogun come off the lorry for one show with a Tollard Park rug on, but thats all that mum can recall. It would seem that the lease may not have worked out to the satisfaction of all parties and that the agreement might have been ended. However if there is anything else I can find out then I will ofcourse post the information here if this is helpful. |

Thanks to everyone so far for their replies. Last week we were passing Salisbury and so called into Tollard Royal village to try and find the stud. We could only find a sign pointing to an equestrian centre and didnt go down the road to it. I wish we had now as research on the internet tells me that this is what the stud now is. I really wanted to see where my old friend was born.
There's no other horse like an arabian and I really miss riding him. |

My Obi is 20 and is no different than when I got him as a 4 year old (just plus a few lumps and bumps). Imagine how delighted I was to learn (via ALs) that he has a brother on his dam's side (S.Jade's El Rachid) and a sister from his sire's side (Honeyb's Honey). He is more sensible and wise nowadays but physically he shows no age. I am so afraid of the decline because I know one day it will start to show. |

My old mare was conservatively 26 when we had her put down (cancer) and she was still going extremely strong, although we don't know her breeding and are not sure if she was a purebred or not. Certainly a lot of arab in there! She got a bit eccentric in her last couple of years (she had always been a determined personality) but was full of energy and go. We fed her grass, hay, alfalfa-lite and oats, and she was fine. The vet reckoned that had the cancer not got her she would have gone on another ten years no problem, as her heart was in magnificent condition. She had arthritis in both hocks, but that was under control, and her front legs would have put a horse half her age to shame. Barring accidents I expect my Amelia go on to 30 (if not more!)

Hi Jude
My gelding 'Jeago' (Ludomino x Bahia) was 33 in May this year (see birthday pic of him rolling below). I've owned him since he was rising 4. He's been very well most of his life, just had a horrible colic when we came back from a short break, recovered well and is ticking along keeping my yearling colt in line! The first 2 pics in my sig are of him.

My pure Arab mare is 30, and she is a very grand old lady indeed, although you never mention in front of her that she is old as she is convinced she's still 4 She still has all her teeth, she is as fat as I've ever seen her and she is loving everyday of her retirement (although she does go for a short walk once or twice a week) I had the vet out to check her teeth and give her her injections the other week and she was amazed at her age and how well she looks so as you can imagine I'm very proud of her especially as I never thought I would she her looking so healthy and happy again as I nearly lost her a couple of years ago when she had a reaction to a sedative. |

My Arab gelding Royal Lustre (Rafid-Twinkling Diamond) is 32 and I have owned him since he was a two year old. Two years ago I went to Norfolk to see his sire Rafid who was 34 at the time. I dont know if Rafid is still with us, but I would love to have known if they were the oldest Arab sire and ofspring alive at the time.
One day when I learn how to use a computer properly I will post pictures of Lusty. No-one believes how old he is because he looks so well. I say its down to the good old Indian Magic blood!

It must be, crystal has Indian Magic in her pedigree, and judges often ask me if she is 20 years, or 20 months. Usually just after she has run away with me in ridden Veteran classes. |

I lost my old gelding a couple of years ago (he was a stallion until he was 8) at almost 31 and his lifelong companion is now 29 and still going strong; he is the original "grumpy old man" lovely with people but a sod with other horses; he still rules the roost. When he approches the others it is like the parting of the RED sea! His teeth are in a poor state but he manages as we soak his feed to a mush and he will still chase the youngsters at a gallop.

Honeyb is 28 and still as mad as a march hare! Fortunately the only think that ails her are a few creaky joints and slightly runny eyes (touchwood!) Other than that shes still showing the others who is boss...and was nicknamed years ago by our YO 'The Demented Prawn'. She still calls her that 15 years on! Sez I should really arrange to pop over and visit you and Obi would love to see him. |
