I am certain that this topic has been addressed before so please excuse me for bringing it up again.
I am asking how long frozen semen should/can be used for after the death of the stallion? What period of time do you think should be allowed, if any?
The other allied question is that if a horse is sold, should the frozen semen still be allowed to be used and sold by the previous owner, even one or many years after his sale?
I think but not certain Jane that the AHS only say one year for a stallion that has deceased.
I know it is much longer in Europe and other parts of the world.
I personally feel that a much longer period should be allowed IF the semen is stored and kept at a recognisable facility.
If a horse is sold then that should be part of the deal - because the original owner of the stallion would have had the semen collected and it would be part of the sale agreement.
I feel that WAHO should decide on a fair set of rules and each participating country should abide by these rules
Hi I did speak to Pippa at the AHS a few years ago on this very subject, when I wished to use some semen from a horse who had died some eight years previously. From what I recall, so long as the required AI permits were in place with the appropriate registry at the time that the semen was collected then registration of the foal shouldn't be a problem. I would however check and make sure as my mare didn't concieve so I never got as far as trying to register a foal!
