Well, how did you all do? You asked us to wish you luck so we at least expect some feedback! I only made it on Saturday so would love to hear how you all did and I hope you really enjoyed your days at the show.

Barbara

PS. Sorry I lied to you when I said I wouldn't buy any books. I am like a junkie craving a fix and bought more than ever this year. In fact Madeleine (Arabian Emporium) had a clear out of some of her books and said she brought them as she thought I would there!!! Thanks,Madeleine.

Well done Morag...know that feeling of achievement. I'am not worried he was last and I did take the best horse home...IMO. He is not everyone's cup of tea....but I'am so pleased we had a successful day
morag Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 11:11:36 PM
As the judge said to me at the tail end of our class - " it was very difficult to judge - it's only my opinion - and everyone on the ringside will be saying what's that matter with the judge why didn't they pick that one? It's better than the one in first place! The judge knows nothing". We had a lovely day out. I bathed him myself loaded him myself and drove to Malvern on my own. Got him prepared , unloaded and to collecting ring on time. Showed him to the people and the judge and accepted last place and a lovely laugh with the judge and then loaded him up and took the best horse home. I feel proud of myself for having done all that on my own this year and proud of my boy who was the best behaved mannerley boy in the class vouched for by the steward. So don't think you are being hard done by if you come last in your class - as long as you have a good experience with your pride and joy horse there will always be someone else watching who thinks the judge is blind!! And you get to take the best one home too!

Don't worry Ruthie, my mare was pulled in bottom then raised to seventh LOL
RUTHIE Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 9:45:20 PM
Lol...yes unusual colour with a hint of chestnut His 3/4 brother, Crystal Flash (RIP) was a rabicano. I saw your 'name' straight away. Don't worry he has an alarm fitted!
T42 Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 9:43:19 PM
Sorry Ruthie, that sounds a bit sinister, I didn't mean it like that. Thanks for getting my "name" right, not many people see it.
T42 Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 9:39:30 PM
Just don't leave him unattended anywhere! By the way, I love his colour too.
RUTHIE Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 9:29:27 PM
Wow tea for two....I'am blown away by your comments.......thank you so much! I'am so pleased you see what I see. I think you are right, he probably was the oldest in the class and if he had been somebody else's horse, I would definitely have wanted to take him home!! I'am chuffed to bits that you liked him.
T42 Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 8:59:55 PM
Ruthie,
I watched your class & as soon as he walked in the ring I thought "that's a typical Crabbet". What a lovely horse. Well put together, plenty of bone and such a lovely eye & temperament. He behaved perfectly in that heat, interested and alert and mannerly. From the way he reacted to you it looks as though you have a super relationship. He's going to be great fun to ride, you'll have lots of fun together. Don't be discouraged, he might have been put down the line because he was the oldest in the class, that often happens. He was the horse that I would have taken home!

Can't wait for the sweet photos :)
RUTHIE Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 3:03:02 PM
Thank you kath. I'am waiting for the Sweet ones also to decide which ones to buy. Nothing like a bit of travelling to somewhere strange for a young horse to experience .
kath Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 2:09:52 PM
I've looked at your photos on the ES site Ruth and he's lovely. He'll go out and do a proper job - just looked on any showing, and the evaluations too, as training for him seeing the outside world, getting used to travelling etc. I do some in hand with Gus when he was 2/3 years old - not lots but we did trail down south a few times to C shows and BACS etc - it has stood him in excellent stead for his ridden career
RUTHIE Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 2:05:04 PM
On reflection it was good fun and a good education for him. A long way to travel in the heat. He didn't deserve last only IMO though. He has his BEF futurity grading for endurance next Saturday. Let's hope he does well. I don't think showing is our thing. It's all a bit too clicky for my liking. I shall look forward to the riding bit which it is what it's all about.
debs Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 1:46:16 PM
Yes, screaming , banging, whips... Not my idea of good showmanship! Pleased sue won with mica up against the professionals too, not 'outside assistance' just a calm horse that lit up when he moved! A normal horse, kept out, in during day through summer, turned out with his mates...
Sue will be working on ridden as he is still green, she is showing at the cherish at Addington next month... Almost local to us so will be nice and easy!
Look forward to seeing your boy in the ridden crabbets....
Pasch Posted - 01 Aug 2014 : 11:14:14 AM
Ruth that comment on Skye was really dumb and in my opinion it shows all that is wrong with the Arab showing world today.
He looks beautiful and will make a wonderful riding horse.
Pauline Posted - 31 Jul 2014 : 9:28:13 PM
I so agree Tamila. A few years ago I was showing my boy at Newbury. After the class we spoke to the judge, see if his comments could help us in the future. He said the horse was well put together with good conformation and yes he was last. Its who you know not how good the horse is.

My lad has gone on to be a good calm endurance horse.

I went to the show on Saturday and was so disappointed, it was dull, and seemed empty and oh yes they are still screaming and banging.
Libby Frost Posted - 31 Jul 2014 : 05:56:40 AM
yes me too!!

I thought more folks would have put up posts of their day there...plus photos
debs Posted - 30 Jul 2014 : 9:11:06 PM
Oh Barbara I jdo adore my little monkey... Would have loved to have taken him but he requires more schooling it's a long way to go and expensive for just an in hand class! To me he is fab, whether or not a judge would think so I have no idea!
Even though he is a monkey sometimes on Sunday some Pratt in a very old, very noisy motor bike with side car frightened him so much he spun round and cantered off....towards an on coming car, I lost my balance and flew off, landed on a foot and managed to stop him. Not the Pratt on the motor bike though I was raging! And shook up, but got back on and he was really good! Just settled back down straight away! Poor boy!
Maybe he will make it next year!i know mika (SAS I feel frisky) will be there!

And what's the point in having a horse if it couldn't make a nice riding horse????
kath Posted - 30 Jul 2014 : 10:14:37 AM
I would be delighted with the commend "will make a lovely riding horse" - i'm sure he will! I was told that when i took Gus to BACS as a 2 & 3 year old, he did really rather well for a horse shown by a complete amateur (very well placed both times and a couple of reserve championships) and each judge told me he would make a fantastic riding horse.

Well done Ruth (and everyone else that went!), i'm so glad your boy behaved and thats showing for you - another year/judge and you'd have been at the other end of the line. Hopefully you will take him again and do the sports horse classes too :-)
RUTHIE Posted - 30 Jul 2014 : 09:22:11 AM
Thank you for your comments. I have had a look at his professional photos and of course to me he is fab. I will admit I was a little disappointed that he came last. I suppose I thought the judge would see all the hard work we have put in to pull this boy around. But, also I actually thought that is what Crabbet's are suppose to be is a riding horse. He was in a class of 1 to 3 year olds. I think he may have been the oldest. How do you separate different stages of growth and maturity in a showing class with such an age gap. The show was super and well run thou. On reflection I couldn't see what else we could have done for his manners to be recognised as a good advocate for the versatile Arab.....stand on his hind legs maybe. And I do see this boy, ears *****ed, lovely floating paces and enjoying every moment of his first pleasure ride...me on his back ( hopefully) having fun. I could always persue a showing future for him....round and round the ring....nah be a waste of him!!! (Said with tongue in cheek).
Libby Frost Posted - 30 Jul 2014 : 09:12:54 AM
why dont judges just say nothing at all lol
tamila Posted - 30 Jul 2014 : 07:48:20 AM
That is the type of comment which makes my blood boil. It is worse than the one I had when showing my two year old. The judge asked me how old she was and when I said 2 she said it was such a shame that the other horses in the class did not behave as well as her as at least she could see how beautifully she moved and was made. She came last!!!

That sort of comment, while kindly meant, makes me laugh ... what on earth is the point of an Arab who wouldn't 'make a nice riding horse'??.... the whole point of the breed imho is that they are utterly sublime riding horses.

Indeed. Riding horse should not be a derogatory term. Ruthie your boy won't just make a nice riding horse, he will make a ruddy stonking riding horse.

Mind you at one of the shows we took Felix to we had a judge use the term in its proper context: 'You must bring him back when he's older for the ridden classes because I really want to ride him'

The in hand showring is a nice outing for a young horse (or should be!) but is unbelievably limited, such a wonderful athletic animal being judged just at walk and trot while being led by a mere human being...pah!
It doesn't even judge THE Arab gait, the canter, which is so smooth and such a joy to ride.. Ruthie if your boy behavd well and you had fun that is a win ...the real good times are all ahead of you when you will be able to float along on his back eating up the miles!!
