Hi, our rising 2 year old has a half flaxen tail and strands of flaxen through his mane.. My question is, do they go lighter with age or by nearly 2 years do you expect it stay that colour??..his dad has a flaxen mane if that's any use #128522;..
Poor.service I'm rubbish at colour genetics etc

Not sure on this one! My friend had a chestnut mare with a chestnut mane and tail, she sold it to another friend as a broodmare, they kept her in a herd and out most of the time, when they sold her I helped them and she had a full blonde mane and tail by then. I didn't recognise her!
This would segest that it was faded by the sun. However young do horses have chestnut manes and tails and as they get older they get blonder, but not sure if again it's to do with fading or when they reach a certain age they go chestnut again. |

| Mine have been the opposite, flaxen haired beauties that eventually turn chestnut as they get older. My boy definately gets a lighter mane in the summer. My little shetland stayed flaxen into her twenties. |

Thanks for the replies..
His dam is grey and his sire is chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail...
It seems to go light then dark and changes all the time.. At the moment it's a lighter chestnut with a few white hairs running through..
I suppose it's like asking how long is a piece of string.
I just wondered in people's experience do they find they go lighter with age, but I'm guessing not having seen your post golden mane..
Having said that he isn't 2 till may, so guessing time will tell..

| one of mine was really flaxen when I got him, his mane has got darker. Strange though that where I clip the top of his mane it's really bright flaxen. His tail still has lot of flaxen and colours in it :-) |

| Ali's gets lighter in the summer....his Mohican is usually more blonde :) his mane is a little crinkly and fine but the Mohican nice and thick and straight.... |
