Hi, how do people prepare their young stock for shows? Do you feed from the floor? 24. Hour turnout?

I have a rising 2 year old looking a bit 'fat' he's fed from a raised bucket as he kicks feed everywhere. Fed from a haynet and is stabled at night. Trying to achieve a better natural neck. He doesn't look bad but could look better :)

For prep, rug well, feed plenty and add a balancer and a little oil, we used to feed boiled linseed, I have done it in the microwave but not for many years. Most yards would put on horse walker each day and lunge and do show prep, trotting out and standing up square. Grooming is very important and would be done for about 1 hour a day. Most are stabled during show prep time.
It's a lot of work and most would send there horses to a professional yard for this.

At home you could rug and feed well, handle and do trot ups ect each day, practiced loading, and do the grooming, I am not a fan of lunging youngstock hard.

Your horse should be fit not fat and look the picture of heath. Do a few local shows first, but beware of Shetland pony owners as at shows they can get short horse sindrum, and that I have found to be a problem with most horses.

Forgot to add feed hay from floor or in a low small holed net, if the mucels have developed underneath, it will take about 6 to 9 months to change to the other side, don't force this! And remember any work done should be in the long and low position to add natural top line.

If you horse looks weak or under developed don't rush to do the big shows.

Thanks Gloria he looks good but it's building a better neck. He's not upside down but would like a bit more muscle. He's rubbish at standing and I've never taught a horse to before. How do you teach them to stand correctly?

Some great advice from glo and I agree feeding from the floor will certainly help with the neck. As he's only 2yrs I would not be in a hurry to work him, walking him out in hand will be good training as you can practice getting him to stand on his walks, try to keep everything short and simple and fun never forget he's only young. Is this your Sameon boy ? Good luck with the training and shows , I did one with one of my pally babies when she was 2yrs but have to confess I am not a showing person but it dose do them good to see the sights and sound when growing up.

As to teaching to stand, as the judge looks at the side of the horse you want your horse to be standing on all 4 feet but with the horse one step out front and back, this is so the judge can see all legs, as the judge moves around to the front your horse needs to step forward 1 step so he is standing square on all 4 feet.

At home practice walking out and then trot out, then ask for the stand, pull the horse forwards and back till he is square, have some pony nuts in your hand and position his head where you want it, I like the natural head, arched neck with nose pointing to the ground, not vertical. Make sure that he is standing on all 4 feet.

It will take practice and hours of training. You will think you'll not getting anyware, but it will all come together.

Don't do what I do, get up I the morning and think i am going to show today, drag horse in to trailer, plat once there, wash of marks then discover that horse won't come out of the trailer! It was her first time travling! We also came last thanks to Shetland owners, and a very misbehaved 3 yo. But she did the most amazing trot around the ring having got away from me, scaring all the riders in the next ring!

Yes I had him gelded on weaning. Gutting really as he's a very nice boy and he gets comments where ever we go. When we were at a show last year 2 people actually approached us as they were looking for 'Sameon' yearling out of the schedule. Unfortunately I can't upload photos on here anymore :(
