I have an Ideal VSD saddle. I don't do endurance but do hack for up to 15-20 miles. I have to say my Ideal, although fits my boy well, isn't the most comfy saddle I have had. The seat is quite hard but I do have a boney bum! I got the VSD to give more shoulder clearance and you do stay put when they spook.
They do a quilted leather seat by special order, don't know if that is an option. |

I have tried several ideal saddles in the past and must say haven't found them the most comfortable. What I went for in the end was a Black Country Hartley which has knee rolls but is quite straight cut- I love it it is so comfortable have done pleasure rides dressage and jumping in it |

I used to have an Ideal International event....I could of sat in it all day with no problems. Didnt fit the young one though. I also had the Ideal H&C for him when he was first backed...loved it too but he had to go and change shape :/. We do mostly dressage now so Ive just got a Black Country......I love it. Ive heard great things about them. They seem to make round horses and ponies not feel quite as wide without compromising on comfort for the rider. There are so many Ideals, I suggest trying a few before committing just to see how they feel under your bum. I tried an Ideal impala on my boy to see how I felt as it had a narrow twist thinking that was what I needed....we both thought it was awful. It felt strange under my seat bones and my horse would barely move so he obv hated it too. |

Thanks guys, i used to ride in a Ideal Jessica when i did DR , its still here but haven,t sat on it for years so cannot remember if it was comfy or not, i wear a numed seat saver on all mine anyways as i like to be comfy I was looking at maybe VSD or International event but faffing, i think the event may be too forward cut with her shape so will look like its sitting on her shoulders , shes bum high so needs to be made so its lower panel behind than in front. Firelight could you jump small fences in your VSD saddle if you wanted to as i cannot afford to have 2 made and i like to pop fences on rides and schooling days etc. |

Yes Sab2 I can jump in mine, pop logs out hacking and small course of jumps with no problem. It has lovely little knee rolls but also gives plenty of shoulder clearance. You will be fine with a seat saver on, I tried one but couldn't get on with it, pity really as it would make the saddle perfect. |

Sab2 I had an Ideal International Event VSD for LIly, did endurance in it for 3 years, and it was fine, although not the most comfortable - I put a gel seat saver on it which helped a lot, did up to 2 day 80km in it. Only traded it in because although it fitted Lily fine it was a bit big for me, which I found tiring the further we went. It was fine for galloping and jumping. It was certainly straight cut enough to free up Lil's shoulders. A couple of pics to give you some idea from either side with various 'endurance' bits and bobs attached
PS Tried her in an Ideal Jessica - more comfy for me but she wasn't so keen..... |

Thankyou guys i feel a lot happier now, shes not been the easiest of horses so far and long term i am not sure we will be doing many miles but i have at least got to give her a chance. I also posted on the EGB forum and somebody suggested Saddle Company saddles but i do not know anybody who owns one so i can have a look at it, the Black Country seem to be liked but again i know nobody who has one to look at. |

I ended up with Flair put into mine event saddle. Not because I didnt find it comfy with the flocking, it was more I love Flair after my old ponies saddle had it. My mare was croup high and the flair made it so much easier to fit the saddle to her shape. Came in very handy as she got older with muscle wastage too. |

Goodness what a faff, after asking people what they think of different saddles i am getting the Saddle Company fitter out next week, the benefit with these saddles is if i sell my horse the saddle can be changed to fit another horse which sadly the Ideal saddle could not be. They are also less expensive to buy if i go for the basic model and i can get a jumping flap to put on when i want it. Well thats the plan for now anyway till she comes out to look next wed, lets hope she can fit one to her |

We had an older lady saddle fitter who was very particular about which saddles she would use/recommend. Saddle Company were one of her recommended saddles so def worth a try. Native Pony saddles are also worth looking at imo. My sister has endurance style for her Haflinger and a friend has wh style for her New Forest. Both had problems with saddle fitting and are now both happy with their new saddles. |

Thanks Misshana, sadly i have found out the trees for Saddle Company saddles are not suitable for her shape, shes flat backed, short coupled and bum high so need a flatter tree on her . We are using a Thorowgood cob saddle on her at the min as the tree on that is flatter so will just keep plodding on using that for the short term.

I had a Thorowgood cob saddle on Marvin for a little while (shape was right but it didnt stay put - so frustrating) Now in an Ideal H&C Apex saddle which has a flatish tree and an extra wide gullet. I'm very pleased with it and as (or if) he gets a bit narrower I might just swap it for the same saddle in a slightly narrower fitting. You can get them secondhand on ebay for about £400. |

Lily's VSD as in photos also had a flatter tree and a wider gullet. Not all Ideal trees are the same though. |

Sadly Arachnid the off the peg Ideal saddles will not fit so i cannot just buy one , they will have to make the panel at the back lower than the front panel on a 16.5 length so needs to be custom made, nothings easy is it. Callisto your right they are not all the same, i am getting to learn lots in the last few weeks on panels, saddle trees, balance straps etc |

if she's short and flat backed I'd definitely consider native pony saddles as that's exactly what theyre made for. My friends new forest had terrible trouble fitting one that didnt move, but has had no problems since buying the wh style. She managed to get a hardly used second hand one from them for around £700 . |
