The only way to ensure nothing gets out is not to put anything on here until trial is over. PM people if they are desperate to know. |

But nothing is being said that would in any way hinder the case - everybody has been very restrained in what they have said (and rightly so). But we are all desperate to know the outcome so I hope we dont have to resort to PM's. |

No once the case starts the days proceedings can be discussed as its then deemed to be in the public domain..........only if it was being heard behind closed doors and the public not allowed would it be deemed to be contempt of court |

This is the first update from the court, it's not pleasant reading but nothing about this is going to be pleasant, but if they lived it then we can read it
A WOMAN has gone on trial, accused of animal cruelty, after the remains of seven horses were discovered on her land.
Rachelle Peel, 56, faces 22 charges of cruelty to horses and dogs. The charges follow a visit by RSPCA inspectors and police to her property at Brookhouse Green Farm, Dale Head, Slaidburn, and her barn in Knotts Lane, Tosside, in March 2013.
Opening the case for the RSPCA at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court, Iain O’Donnell said representatives of the Horses & Pony Protection Association attended Peel’s home address at Brookhouse Green Farm following a report of a dead horse in a field.
There was nobody in so the officer drove back to Slaidburn to phone to request the presence of the police and a vet.
Later that day they went into a field at the farm and found the carcass of a horse.
There were a number of living horses feeding from a large bale of hay which was next to the carcass.
Shortly afterwards, the officials went into the farmhouse where there were a number of dogs.
The police officer said the house smelled so strongly of urine that his eyes were watering, and there were dog faeces all over the floor.
There were dogs tethered outside which the prosecution say were in a poor condition.
The party was joined by an RSPCA inspector. The police officer spoke to a farmer in a nearby field and as a result they went to the Knott Lane site which comprised a field and a large barn which was locked. The officer went to Brookhouse Green Farm and returned with a key.
There were two living horses in the field and what appeared to be the remains of at least two more horses.
Inside the barn there were three horses which were living among the remains of four dead and decomposed horses.
“One of the dead horses was in the same pen as the living animals,” said Mr O’Donnell.
A number of horses were removed immediately and more the following day.
One horse became upset in transit and suffered injuries which meant it had to be put down.
Two other horses which were removed were put down in the days that followed.
RSPCA inspector Kat Hamlyn attended the sites the day after the initial discoveries and organised the removal of more horses and dogs.
The case continues.

Catherine 1960 has copied the article from the Lancashire Telegraph where there is also a photo of Rachelle Peel.
Please, no comments on here except to say that you have read the article in the paper, be great to see all those who have read it!
The wheels of justice are now turning, we must not do anything to derail it. Thank you all for your understanding, you are a great bunch of people. While many of us will never find out what happened to our beloved horses (and we try not to imagine it) a few lucky ones may be united with them. |

I will only put updates on from the local paper............1 because its in the public domain and anyone can read it online, 2 I remain impartial and only put what has been published, once this is over then people can and may express their feelings, but until it is then I would ask for a continuance of the restraint you have all shown so far, you have all been so dignified through all of this and I ask for that for a while longer, then she can't scream 'unfair trial' at anyone |

Claire "Is it clear how many in total were rescued?"
We have been told that the horses were taken to two rescue centres but don't know which horses or how many. This is "classified" information until it comes out in court.
Thank you all again for your support and discretion; it means a lot to us all and is very much appreciated. |

read. and read too the previous threads. my thoughts are with you who have horses involved. Catherine(and potentially others) that know of law. i appreciate its best to not talk of this case but is there likely to be differences in the way this enfolds regarding the plea of innocence rather than guilt? Will the evidence be presented differently, will there be differnces in the way the case is presented, judged and sentenced? |

OK Christine has been sat in court this morning and to say she is upset is putting it mildly.............this morning they had a video and they played it, Christine was warned it wasn't pleasant but she made herself watch it and to say it was horrific is putting it mildly............she say those images will be burned into her brain for a very long time, BUT she has a list of those who got out, it is not going to be put on here but if anyone wants it then you can have via PM.. although I'm not able to say as yet that the list is the final correct one as three of the horses as we know from the previous post have had to be PTS. Obviously the final list will be released when they are able to. |

this is from the Clitheroe Advertiser
The trial of a 56-year-old Slaidburn woman accused of animal cruelty involving horses and dogs has begun at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court.
Rachelle Peel faces 22 charges arising out of discoveries at her properties at Brookhouse Green Farm, Dalehead, Slaidburn, and at a barn in Knotts Lane, Tosside, in March 2013.
Opening the case for the RSPCA, Iain O’Donnell said representatives of the Horses and Pony Protection Association (HAPPA) attended Peel’s home at Brookhouse Farm following a report of a dead horse in a field. There was nobody in so the officer drove back to Slaidburn to phone to request the police and a vet.
Later that day, they went into a field at the farm and found the carcass of a horse. There were a number of living horses feeding from a large bale of hay next to the carcass. Shortly after, the officials went into the farmhouse where there were a number of dogs. The police officer said the house smelled so strongly of urine his eyes were watering and there was dog faeces all over the floor. There were also dogs tethered outside which the prosecution say were in a poor condition.
The group was joined by an RSPCA inspector and, while they were on site, the police officer spoke to a farmer in a nearby field and, as a result, they went to the Knott Lane site, which comprised a field and large barn which was locked. The officer went to Brook House and returned with a key.
There were two living horses in the field and what appeared to be the remains of at least two more horses.
Inside the barn there were three horses living among the remains of four dead and decomposed horses.
“One of the dead horses was in the same pen as the living animals,” said Mr O’Donnell.
A number of horses were removed immediately and more the following day. One horse became upset in transit and suffered injuries which meant it had to be put down. Two other horses which were removed were put down in the days that followed.
RSPCA Inspector Kat Hamlyn attended the farms the day after the initial discoveries and organised the removal of more horses and dogs.
The case is proceeding.
An animal charity worker has told how he found horses sharing a muddy field with the carcasses of dead horses.
Other horses living in buildings around the remote Slaidburn farmhouse were kept in “appalling” conditions, although their bodily condition was good.
Giving evidence on the second day of the trial of Rachelle Peel, Mr Peter Bartlett said he had attended at Brookhouse Green Farm, Slaidburn, after the Horses and Ponies Protection Association received information there was a dead horse in a field.
He saw seven living horses in a muddy field that he described as “bottomless”. Mr Bartlett set off to walk up the field but had to turn back after sinking up to his knees. He went up the side and when he reached higher ground discovered the carcasses of two horses, one with a rug on and the other without. Mr Bartlett went back to the farm were he saw numerous other horses and several dogs. He was unable to get a mobile phone signal and drove back to Slaidburn to request assistance.
“We are a small charity dealing specifically with equines,” he told the court. “It was my view this was a matter beyond our limitations and the RSPCA may have been better able to cope.”
After summoning assistance Mr Bartlett returned to Brook House Farm and found a large bale of haylage had been put in the field close to where the carcasses of the dead animals were lying.
“It was so close the live animals were almost standing on the carcasses,” said Mr Bartlett. “I thought it had been placed to mask the view from the road.
Peel (56), of Brookhouse Green Farm, Dale Head, Slaidburn, has pleaded not guilty to 22 animal welfare related charges.
The case is proceeding.
