Shire horse foal shot in horrific attack in Lancashire

Police are hunting for the person who shot and maimed a seven-month-old prize-winning foal in a "horrific attack" at a remote farm.

Shire horse Cara was blasted with a shotgun at close range while she was being sheltered by her mother at Buckhurst Farm, near Ramsbottom, in Lancashire.

Experts fear that Cara, who was exhibited recently at the Peterborough Show, may be left with long-term breathing and feeding difficulties.

She is being treated at Liverpool University's veterinary hospital.

Police are appealing for any riders, ramblers and mountain bikers who might have seen or heard anything at the time of the attack overnight of 9/10 April will come forward.

People with any information are being asked to call Rossendale CID on 01706 237347 or alternatively, to call Crimestoppers, in confidence on 0800 555 111.

B*STARDS, hope they catch the vermin. Poor little mite, lets hope she's young enough to not suffer any psychological damage and strong enough to make a full recovery.

Poor baby. So much evil out there, will it ever end. As horse owners we cannot win. If we keep them in, then arsonists get them, if we keep them out then any passing sadist/sicko/saddo uses them as target practice. Where has all this evil sprung from? 30-40 years ago I never used to worry about my horses becoming targets for thugs, whether kept inside or out. Doesn't say much for the progress we have supposedly made in those years does it? Just how the hell can we protect our horses.

Just terrible, echo sentiments that i hope the horrible cruel evil person is caught and prosecuted (i would prefer hanging but thats illegal) there was a spate in this area where horses had been attacked with knives in the fields, they were getting their tendons sliced, me thinks i would be doing life now if they had got amber or jamaica. That poor foal, lets hope it doesnt tar us all us humans with the same brush.

What a cowardly evil act, to do that to a defenceless animal and a baby at that. Let's hope this individual accidently shoots his own head off one day, or better still an arm or a leg!!!!

At least the police are looking for the person/s. That's something, I suppose.

Attacks on horses have always happened - and for a long time in Kent, what, some thirty years ago? - there was a lot of vicious attacks on horses. It was kept very quiet to prevent copycats. I don't know if they ever caught the people or whether they eventually died/moved away/went to prison for something else...
