I know how good you all are on here about listening to someone rant but I really need to vent!!!
Very recently my groom who had been looking for a while for a suitable prospective ridden arabian came across a young but extremely suitable horse. She hasnt a lot to spend and we had both agreed that a good quality youngster was by far better than an average older ridden horse. She has great aspirations of reaching a high level in ridden showing and was choosing carefully. She is a caring person who will dote on her purchase so when we found a suitable horse, the right pedigree, height, temperament etc with great delight she put in an offer. This was accepted!! Anyways, collection and delivery was organised and monies wired for payment. My groom was excited and eagerly anticipating her new horse to arrive. So much so she went 'horse shopping' impending her arrival. Stable organised (ridiculously well in advance lol)and every possible thing got ready.
To be told today that the seller 'had not agreed a sale' and apparently the sale was off also because my groom might leave me and the horse would be abandoned, I have never heard anything so bloody ridiculous in my life. And I take it as a personal slur on her and myself if anyone would think we would abandon a horse or 'chuck it out' when a whim suited us. It turns out that this seller has done this before and shattered someones dreams.
This is the first time in my life that I have met a timewaster seller, normally people are pushing you to buy, but if you don't want to sell, don't damn well tell people it is for sale, don't waste peoples, time, money and efforts to organise everything and don't ever ask me or my staff to buy anything ever again. I thought this was a respectable person with morals but apparently not.
As far as I am concerned this person is blacklisted from me buying or them trying to buy from me.
Anyways rant over and thankyou for listening.

What a shame and how stupid and utterly rude of the seller.

A horse is either for sale or not.

Rant away I don't blame you.

How dissapointing for your groom. This has happened to me twice in the past. As it happened they both did me the biggest favour as I went on to purchase far superior horses than they were offering, one of these persons is still doing it as far as I know, to my knowledge the same seller sold the same horse to at least 4 other people and backed out of the sale. This person was also alledgedly 'reputable'. A lesson learnt though it wont happen again.

Very strange. I have 'vetted out' potential homes in various ways, but never agreed to sell to one that I thought was unsuitable. Do these people ever actually sell their horses or are they just testing the market? I have been to sellers who have told tales of so many people waiting to view, right!

I have had a few visitors to my horses recently, and although they are not necessarily potential buyers, I know some I would sell to, even if not at a price that compares to the asking prices advertised for similar stock. The 'right' home is so important for youngstock you have bred yourself.

I can't understand this, as at face value the home here sounds ideal.

Snap Helen - it's happened to us as well - one horse was actually sold even though there was a written agreement.

Causes lots of heart ache, lots of money and wasted time in Court.

Still like Helen, maybe it's done us a favour and at least we now know who really is reputable. Big loss for the seller though cos they could have had another WAHO horse or at least one doing really well in the world rather than being hidden in obscurity and not earning the seller/breeder any brownie points. Their loss.

how weird

in this economic recession a good sale is probably worth its weight in gold and although we all like to say a 'forever home' we can not know what the future holds......tomorrow misfortune could be us!

your groom sounds ideal what strange ideas some people have

hope she got the money back and will find the horse of her dreams from someone who appreciates what she has to offer now, not at some possible imagined time in the future when she might not work for you...[guess you do not do liveries?]

This sounds a bit peculiar... why put something out for sale, accept an offer and the money, then change your mind? I hope your groom finds another horse soon and gets over her disappointment.

I am sorry for your groom Pashon. I myself did once pull out of a prospective sale as I discovered that the person wanting to buy my horse was a dealer and was trying to knock me down on price after the sale had been agreed and was planning to sell my horse on. I would not sell to a dealer.

Why all the shock horror, you have only to look at the housing market and look how many people withdraw their homes from sale when potential purchasers have spent a fortune on surveys/lawyers etc.

Perhaps it is just a shock for your groom bearing in mind the current economic climate.

Personally, I would refuse to sell a horse or any animal for that matter, if I felt that the home being offered was not what I wanted for them. But that is a sellers perogative afterall!

Still there are plenty of other horses for sale at the moment, it wont take her long I am sure, to find another perfect horse.

I agree - people do change their minds and that's fine. But once the seller has accepted money then it's a formal contract, legal and binding and the seller shouldn't back out then. If Pashon's groom has already paid then she has every right to expect the horse to be handed over or be very disappointed.

In house sales, people don't usually pull out once money has been paid. It's slightly different.

I would like to say that where and how the horse would be kept was already agreed. A seller has a right to change their minds but not after an agreement has been made. It is a binding contract. Although I really couldnt be bothered to pursue it as the sparkle of her new purchase would be tainted.
I also would pull out of a sale if I found out the person in question was a dealer or did not have the facilities for the particular horse but to refuse a sale on such ridiculous claims is ludicrous. I have sold horses to people with home built 'stables' with muddy driveways and misshapen muck heaps (OMG sin sin sin), MY perogative is warm, dry, well fed and above all LOVED!
Anyways we will find another horse and she will hopefully kick ass with it

It is very disappointing when a seller pulls out, after about 8/9 months of looking for a decent ridden arab I eventually found one that totally fitted what I wanted, the seller was quite happy about the yard he was going to, about 2 hours before the vetting was to due take place, the seller pulled out as she felt she just could not part with him but will struggle on with keeping him, in one way I can understand, the horse had been owned for 10 years and only for sale due to children and work commitments, but it is still upsetting for the purchaser after such a long search, but the search still goes on

Happened to me twice the first time everything was agreed and that night at 10 pm seller rang to say deal was off. Went onto buy my lovely Thea and then when I wanted to replace Thea it happened again but yet again have got another nicer mare. A door shuts and another opens.

Hi how disappointing, I have a great gelding called Aragorn currently for sale on this site. He is a 5yo and was very lightly backed last year. He is a super horse who is destined for a great future either in endurance or showing.

Cheers

I agree that it must be very disappointing for your groom, as it is not only the financial investment of buying a horse but also the emotional one, I can imagine that she was probably already planning all the things that she was going to do and must be a bit crushed.

On the other side of this we have a gelding advertised (I don't sell much very often) and I have had loads of enquiries from people wanting information which is all well and good, and fairly positive. What I find frustrating is that people then ask for photos and more photos, send more emails etc, say they are very, very interested then don't bother to either come and see the horse or come back and just say actually I have changed my mind, he is probably not what I want. Each time I make it quite clear that they are welcome to come and see him no obligation to buy, I am more than happy to show them the horse and my others as I have nothing to hide and am happy to talk horse, and I also want to make sure he is going to the right home. But I feel there are too many people that are happy to waste other peoples time when they have absolutely no intention of buying, even when you put serious enquiries only on your ad; just another perspective on the point; not a rant.
