Having witnessed first hand this weekend a mare suffering from Tetanus and finally being PTS at 9am this morning, I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping horses regularly vaccinated.
I had a new livery on my yard - an import from Romania. A lovely big 500kg plus gentle 5 year old mare who was purchased just 4 weeks ago. Although she had a 5* vetting, it didn't pick up that she had a damaged dock. On closer inspection, after being sedated and tail hair clipped off it revealed that she had suffered what could only be described as ligature damage and subsequently on friday lost the last 2 inches of her dock. She had only just been started with her Tetanus vaccine but the spores had already been picked up and she became very ill over the weekend, not being able to swallow, having nasal gastric tubes to get litres of water into her and struggling with her breathing due to the constriction of muscles. Sadly this morning I found her in a pool of sweat, unable to get up and in serious distress due to the restriction of oxygen. She was PTS within minutes of the vet arriving.
I now have a very sad owner who unfortunately didn't get the mare insured in time, has lost the £3,000 she paid for the mare and will now have a horrendous vets bill to pay without the pleasure of her sweet Mena To add insult to injury she also has to pay for her to be taken away which thankfully happened before she riggored.

Thats terrible news, how awful. I have never been fully aware of the Tetnus and have always just had it done as a matter of routine but never looked right into the tetanus. Sympathys with the owner. Poor girlie. |

thats awful. r.i.p poor Mena.
It's amazing how many people do not bother with tetnus, or even let them slip. |

How terrible, what an awful way to suffer
Can there be any come back on the vets who didn't notice the original injury?

God how awful for the mare, and the owner (and you!).
Some areas of the UK have more incidence of tetanus than others. Our area (midlands) is prone so it's something we always have given as routine. Some people only have the flu jab...
What a salutory lesson. |

How terrible for the new owner, please send her my condolences. So sad that this could have been avoided by a simple and relatively cheap jab. Poor horse.
RIP Mena.

So sad - It's not just the horses that need their tetanus; everyone make sure they have their own jabs upto date. I read this post and checked the dates for the neddies jabs just to make sure. It then dawned on me that I think I am due mine! So so sorry about Mena - condolences to you all. |

I too have seen a horse die from from tetanus (as a child ). It is the most horrific and painful death, and yet I know so many people who do not vaccinate their horses.... |

How very sad, and moreso as it was avoidable.
Many years ago a foal was born on the yard I was on, he was a tiny thing (Mum was section A), when he was about 2 months old he contracted Tetanus. He was small enough to be picked up when he went down. With constant supervision and vet care he made a full recovery, but it was not nice to see.
I ALWAYS make sure my horses are up to date. But I will admit I am a bit over with my own jab. |

Actually, if you have 5 in your life then you never need another. I stood on a rusty nail and had a bad puncture to my foot. When I went to the doctor for a tetanus jab (as it was about ten years since I had one) I was told I never needed another as I had had more than five already.

You mention that she came from Romania 4 weeks ago. Is it possible that the damage was caused to her dock by a too tight tail bandage being left on. There is a horse on the IH forum that was moved from England down to Spain and losts its tail due to a bandage that was put on too tight by the Transport Company. Luckily that horse has survived but Court Action is pending. |

Re human tet. had mine done again last year I think(time flys) had to have it with polio and diptheria all in one jab. Didn't have to pay either the nurse at health centre gave it. Try again |
