I have worked in london for 11 years - I hate it, its horrible, i want to get out but i am stuck here!
i work in a huge investment bank and am surrounded by losers who live to work and graduated with a 1st from the university of 'cheesiness and ar5elicking' - I dunno how I have put up with it for so long..... and to think when I first started out in the city I was like them, what a saddo!
I also do horse photography in my own time, I wish I could get enough work to do that full time, I love it!

I'm a PA in a college so in the mornings I am turning my horses out with my smart work clothes hidden under full length chaps and a big coat and praying that I dont get mud on my face or hay in my hair
My job isnt anything like what I wanted to do - I have a degree in Behavioural Science (psychology and animal behaviour). I was recently given the opportunity to teach Psychology at college but I declined the offer - trying to teach Freud to 16-18 year olds, no thanks |

I'm a full time, self employed IT consultant plus part time (unpaid) farmer, full time mother to 11 year old (and her competition secretary, financier, chauffeur, groom, trainer) plus trying to run my own little stud with over 30 horses (no groom or help apart from very kind and loving OH). Days are very, very long and I know what you mean Pat about feeding everyone. By rights I should be as thin as a stick but I grab food as and when I can - often a butty as I climb the stairs to bed!!
I only work to pay the bills and haven't had a holiday since 1988 - even my one day off following our wedding 2 years ago was spent picking maggots off sheep (mind you, Stephen did propose during lambing, I'd like to say on one knee - which is true - but he had his right arm stuck up a sheep at the time!)
When asked what I'd do if I won the lottery, the answer is simple - have a bloody good night's sleep! |

Michelle - I think it was me who started this last time. I was wondering what on earth job I could do that would still allow me time for my horse. Haven't found the answer yet lol!! Ideally I would like to not work at all & just breed Arab babies
I have just landed a new job which will start in 4 weeks time. I will be a Support Officer to the European Economic Regeneration Team at Brighton Council!! Oh-er Which basically involves a fair bit of admin & organising lots of conferences for business partners thinking of investing in the city. Currently I work in customer services for a different Council. The bonus of local government work is flexi time! So although I am full time, I can mostly arrange my days so that I have time to spend at the yard in the evenings. |

Its great to know what you all do to pay for your horses.
I work for an engineering company as a sales administrator and general dogs body! It is really boring but it pays the wages and gives me all day to catch up on here! I have to keep minimising the screen though when people come up to my desk - my speciality its looking busy when i am in fact engrossed in A.L !! |

Hi all
We both worked for a National Newspaper for years, working in London became very stressfull so we decided to re-locate to France for a more sedate life, we bought a renovated farmhouse with 10 acres of grazing, I run a small B&B, OH helping a friend to renovate his barn so you would think great, but due to being so busy I never get time to ride Jay and I have now developed shingles, which everybody thinks is due to much hard work, so you never win whatever you do, I would not change a thing it's great here.

It is fasinating to learn what others do! I'm a secondary school teacher and also get the holidays though it never feels like it with all the coursework to mark and new government initiative to try to teach and plan for!! But still it's a job that's never the same twice, and I work with some very interesting kids! And it pays for both my Arabs and new house! |
Regards, Sapphire

I'm a Planning Officer for the local Council ("boooo" I hear you all saying) but I'm a friendly one! Seriously, it's a good job, I get out and about on my site visits and as I work in a rural area, its lovely having my lunchtime sandwich up on the top of a hill or sitting in a field full of donkeys, plus its very varied and interesting. I assess allsorts of planning applications, from housing sites to industrial buildings and equine and farm stuff aswell. I like being busy - it's a good job as I'm also studying for my MSc in Environmental Planning, am mum to 2 kids (and the OH), plus 2 horses and various small furry, fluffy and feathered beasties. Local authority work is good - flexitime means I can plan time off to ride and during the winter months I can plan my day around the horses so I don't have to turn out/bring in in the pitch dark with a headtorch on. I figure if I do have to go to work, I should at least try and do something I like. |

I was made redundant about three years ago and enjoyed my time off until I recently started a part time job back in May.
I work 16hrs a week for a small joinery company dealing with all the accounts and payroll and also drive the owner around to site visits, which is really interesting as I get to see inside some lovely country properties
I love it when we pull up and I see horses in their paddocks, my boss has to drag me away as I end up talking to the customer too much |

What a mixed bunch we all are! Good job we have our arabs in common! I am self employed and work mainly from home as an admin assistant/PA. Its ideal with Freddie - I start most days at 10 giving me plenty of time for a ride etc to start my day on a good note and give my self half an hour late afternoon in the winter to see to him. Certainly beats stripping off the leggings and waterproofs to reveal the office suit underneath 2 mins before 9 a.m. and swiftly applying them again at 5.30 p.m. Sandie |

I am local government Lawyer, but like KittyB I am a nice local government officer. I enjoy my job and the flexi time comes in handy with looking after my boy and 2 dogs. |

I work part-time as an Archivist, I work for a Trust, work all day Fridays, and then take home work with me to fit around 4 children, 4 horses, 2 dogs and other half. My job covers my horses, and all our Christmas shopping so that takes the pressure off the OH, he does the rest. If I did not have my job though, I would not be able to keep all these horses, there again I would have more time. Sometimes I feel as if I am chasing my tail, running around like a mad thing, until the evening, when it is nice to sit down with a glass of wine. (about 1/2 hour), then its back to take the dogs out and check horses if they are in. I collapse exhausted into bed every night. I would not have it any other way though, if I was not so busy I would have huge debts, because I would be forever shopping!!! Nicky |

I'm a secretary for the NHS, I enjoy my job and have a really understanding boss who is brilliant when the horses need the vet etc. Unfortunately though,I've been advised today that my job is at risk of redundancy! |

Excellent topic!
I am a typesetter/designer desperately looking for another job but can't get anywhere, I don't know why unless it's that I haven't got a degree and flashy portfolio (just a lifetime's experience in design, winning prizes since I was 7, but no-one seems interested *sob* *sob*)
I used to work fulltime from home but the company made nearly the whole department redundant and stopped all homeworking - they've now realised that this was not a good idea (1.5 people CANNOT do the work of 8 )
I am the sole breadwinner on a feeble wage (I'm also Himself's carer) so Life is not quite as easy as it might be, still, could be worse.
I'm planning to really get down this winter and WRITE and ILLUSTRATE and get stuff published (illustrated one published book already)- maybe I'll write the next Spot! Gotta do something, I thought earlier this year I would lose my horse due to finances (or lack of)... but managed.
Sorry to be a) boring and b) self-pitying
