Just entered for Ashdown Forest and taking 2 friends with me for their first Endurance Experience!
last time I went, I went on my own and was lucky to get to ride with someone who knew what they were doing and we finished on an average of 10.5 km/hr
I have been clocking my training (which has a lot of roadwork admitidely) and the best I can get is 6.5 km/hr on my long rides and 8.65 km/hr on the shorter (1 hour) rides... I use Endomondo - is there a watch or similar that I can buy to track as I go along that won't break the bank?

I guess it depends on what you deem as breaking the bank. The entry level garmin watch with gps and no heart rate monitor will set you back from £125 to £170. A quick look at competing models seems to indicate there is nothing that much cheaper.
Ebay is always an option too, but getting something used has its disadvantages.
I have owned two Garmin gps enabled watches and they are reliable and robust. I can recommend them. If you are interested, I can PM you a couple links. |

Hope all went well Pasha. Sorry we didn't see/ recognise you..perhaps there should be a special wave or something!We had a good ride for our first CR this year. Decided Laddie is def' a little star!
Going to rest up and watch a bit of Olympics before the our "clean and clear up ( box etc )later.

16 year old Hannah Cavaciuti was having her first endurance ride on Waywood Storm yesterday at Ashdown. Her horse (well pony really, he is a 13h 3" Arab) got spooked in the first half of the ride and Hannah disappeared from the other two horses, minus stirrups, at a gallop up a steep hill. After some time she returned down the hill, galloping towards them (this time with stirrups) and he only pulled up when faced with two other competitors coming the other way (apologies to them). Despite this she said she had a great time and her very sharp Arab came back with a Grade 1 (heart rate 38)!

Blimey! We also had a wayward horse - my friends horse slipped in the mud comming out of the woods about 2km before CP4 - horse decided to walk home on her own with is following! Luckily some very nice walkers caught her and we only lost 10 mins!
I was soo proud of Shesky - only his second ever endurance experience at 16yrs old having been through the wars a bit he started and finished on a HR of 44 in 9.58 km/hr... Obviously would have been a bit quicker if it hadn't been for my friends little episode :D |

| We missed a couple of markers and lost time too. The going was pretty boggy as well as rutted so took it steady. We ended up with same time as you Pasha...(also did 10.6 last year)but at least we all finished with safe and sound horses. |

Exactly and I don't think you gain anything by going quiclker do you? As long as you are within the time bands?
I thought it went much quicker this year - must be because we are fitter so din't find it quite so tough - seemed to get to CP1 in no time at all

| We also parted company after a disagreement about how quickly or not to trot down those muddy hills. Spider did for a moment consider ditching the spare and continuing on by himself but realised I was still carrying his map so allowed me to get back on. Very soft landing for both us (he did completely fall over!) so no harm done and he trotted up sound at the end. We were slower than last time we did this ride too, its just not one that you can blast around is it? |

Oh Julia sorry to hear you took a tumble too! Hope you are both ok?
The terrain is tough, especially as you encounter gilleys, stones and ruts on the hills! I am very lucky with Shesky as he is like a little monkey and will happily scramble up and down almost anything - he even likes the sound of his hooves on the wooden bridges, although he could be a bit more careful with me - I reguarly get dragged through bushes for a short-cut! I think he thinks he is shorter than he is! |
