Hi, Lynn Russell does side saddle lessons on her cobs and she is a brilliant trainer. i had loads of lessons with ralph a year or so ago and she transformed us ( lessons were in normal saddle) and she really likes the arabs as used to show them (went to Hoys) . shes based in surrey

Lovely to see an arab side-saddle!
It's something I've been wanting to do, but my boy is short-backed, a max of 17" saddle. I'm only about 5', so I've been thinking that a 151/2" to 16" side saddle would be about right for me, but would this equate to larger than a 17" cross saddle? I don't want to waste Liz's time (or my money!) with a fitting if I already know that he won't be able to carry it. |

Mindles is 13.2, and I am not quite 5ft andshe only has a 15" normal saddle. I think the on in the pic is a 16" but it could only be a 15", I will ask my friend, whose saddle it is. |

Thanks Zaminda1, wasn't expecting such a quick reply! Your mare looks bigger than 13.2hh in that photo - very elegant, both of you!
There's a lot of interest in this thread - maybe we should organise an AL group visit to the national side saddle show this year . |

Yes don't tell her she is only tiny! We don't normally look so elegant, she prefers to be covered in mud, and is refered to as scruffy grey pony, however she prefersto be called The great Zaminda! |

I was watching the side saddle classes at the RHS the other week and its the first time Ive actually sat down and properly watched it. I really enjoyed it and has sparked my interest. My youngster doesnt really fit into any particular type. He has too much elevation for hunter or riding horse, not sport horsey enough to go against the big boys, your part bred showing seems to be all hacks so side saddle is something I quite fancy looking into once he's old enough. |

But sadly i might have to wait a bit i have been having problems again due to back again my next challenge will be walking without having to stop due to pain. Did tell Doc today my plans had not stopped regarding riding just changed to trying side saddle he did not say no but has asked if i can wait until i see the pain therapy at the hospital on August 1st
At the end of the day i am only 37 so not ready to hang up my riding hat yet |

If I remember correctly Lynn Russell rode Carrick Crystif.I have really bad hip joints and I found side saddle far more comfy-didn't think I would be able to manage at all. Will try and post a picture. |

I became expert at fitting the bun and veil when grooming for a side-saddle friend over many years and a selection of horses. The 3 day SSA show was like pony club camp for us!
Cindy Sims - not only Betty Skelton's granddaughter but also an excellent Arab judge. I was very sad to read that she was thinking of giving up judging because she was tired of abuse.
I agree that the way forward is to hire a saddle first of all before you commit to buying as the fit is important and a good quality one is too expensive to buy and then find it isn't right. I am sure the SSA will be able to put you in touch with someone in your area - round these parts it is Roger Philpott, but I am sure there will be someone nearer to you. Good luck! |
