Hello,

Strange question really, but does anyone have geese near their horses?

I am in quite a remote spot that seems to be hit with thefts at the moment (we have had fencing stolen, a neighbour had a car stolen and another near-ish neighbour had a tractor taken...).
Mum suggested we buy a couple of geese to stick on the lake as they are good guard 'dogs'. But, the lake is fenced off with the semi-permanent electric rope on fencing stakes type fencing so the geese can wander into the horses field...
Do they get on?! Or will the geese terrorise the horses?

Thanks!

Liz

Years ago my neighbour's two geese moved up to our place, they slept in the steading, wandered around the yard and field and my garden, the two horses didn't seem in the least bit bothered by them, or the bantams that roosted in the rafters of their stable. They are a bit messy though (poo wise), not a problem if they are not spending time on your front doorstep/garden path....

On our farm we had geese in field with the horses, I seem to remember they got on fine, if anything th horses might have chased the geese! I also remember the geese chasing my dad though!

friends of mine had geese - no problems with the horses at all, but as they grew older and matured they would go for people, honking at them and attacking with flapping wings, even my friends themselves! all i can say is they REALLY hurt when they bite as they seem to grab and then twist.

During the breeding season ganders can be very aggressive - ours took great pleasure in terrorising our livery so we had to fence him in
We had one youngster that used to pull the horses' tails, but in the end he got one kick too many.

When I was very little (before I was school age) mum kept the horses at a yard with a flock of Geese - we were terrified of them and they would chase all humans... fine with the horses though

We keep geese with our horses. They have a shed on the yard and are free range in the daytime. We have no problems at all with them and the horses although Clyde (gander) will attack anything else that moves so they are good guard in the day but you will need to shut them up at night to protect them from foxes. Shut up they are no help as guard at all as we found out 2 nights ago when we had our yard burgled yet again.

I like having geese around even the attack ninja sort

I work at a small yard at a friends house some weekends and she did have two geese, only one now unfortunately, but she wanders round the place and often goes in the horses fields and they all get on fine, they are messy though agree with that but she is quite friendly and often comes over for a stroke.

I have recently moved from a yard that had 5 geese. Were fine with the horses but soooo noisy! Very good guard dogs!

Alarm guns are the best deterrant ,( blank cartridges set off by tripwires.) nobody likes a very loud noise next to them if they are creeping about at night especially useful near your tack-room.... We have geese running free with our horses, they are not fast enough to escape from a playful Arab.

Doug you are right about the noise aspect. We rigged a rape alarm on one of our doors and it made the lowlifes scarper in short order.

Our youngster thought he'd chase Clyde, big mistake!! Clyde put his wings up and bellowed at him, Joe's face was a picture and he gave the game up. He 's never done it since and the geese don't care 2 hoots about him either!! They do make me smile.
