As some of you might know, my boy has been kicked several times now, and therefore he has got 3 lumps of scar tissue on his fore legs... would it be a good idea to get my vet to make a written report that these has occurred after trauma????... I'm thinking to show judges before the classes, so hopefully the wont let him loose because of that... or would this not have any effect, should I just not show him?

My boy has two lumps on his o/s fore cannon from two seperate kicks, and the judge has not said anything or asked about them,(in hand)he is not unsound and still shows nicely, but i have been told they will be less of a concern in ridden classes?
How old is your boy, mine is 4 and they have shrunk as he is growing.
i don't know if it helping but i put goldlabel wondergel on the scars, it conatins aloe vera and lots of other yummy things, got fur re-growth in three weeks from a graze injury! |

| Thank you... Champ is 3 and wont be shown until he is senior stallion (in hand)... just know that dog show judges like to get a vet report stating that any weird bumps are from trauma.... I use Socatil cream at the moment, its prescription only, but have got Mega trek re builder, that normally is good for hair, so when the last one has healed, I will use that... also rubbing lumps with witch hazel 2 daily... hoping it will reduce it a bit. |

Thank you very much... he was shown once as a yearling, but got medium points for head and neck... I didn't find that being fair, and that's why I've chosen not to show him until he has matured.... however all these knocks was making me worry if it wouldn't be worth showing him again, as he might get low points on legs now....
Body and neck is VERY correct, head... well he will never get the modern in hand face, but that doesn't matter to me, he is typical traditional Polish, but still with a little dish... if he wants too on the day, he can trot without touching the ground |

| Hi I really dont think you can approach a judge before a class by the way, that would be unethical. It could also be quite embarrassing for you and the judge. You possibly could be disqualified from the class for approaching a judge before the event. You can of course ask after judging has finished for advise Regards Georgina x |

A judge can usually tell what is an acquired mark and what isn't. And also if the mark is acquired due to a confomration fault. Acquired marks happen, particularly in older ridden horses, and they won't be frowned upon as much as a conformational defect. All things being equal they might lose you a place.
But don't approach the judge prior to your class!
It's up to you whether you show under points system or a sole judge. Either way you will know from comments or scores if/how much his scars were noticed. |

I was thinking in the lines of ect. dogshows.... here you give them the vet report when you enter your dog... so before the show even has started.
I know a good judge should be able to see what is from trauma and what is a fault... however it would give me some peace of mind to have this report to show. |

Hi - by all means get the report, but horse shows are not like dog shows, and you would not be able to show the judge or steward any type of report. You should not have any contact with the judge what so ever, even if you showed the report to the organisers, they will not pass on any information concerning an exhibitor to the judge.
I suggest that you just take him to some shows and see what happens - there are a lot of horses being shown with blemishes - its a fact of life, horses get kicked, knocked, and as what was said before its not a confirmation fault, the only time it would really matter is if the judge was uncertain about his/her winner then blemishes may come into it as a decision maker. From a judges point of view:
You should never offer any written report before a show.
If there are two equal horses of merit, the one with the blemishes would be dropped below the "perfect" one.
These days horses do obtain blemishes and as long as they are not due to conformational faults then most judges can distinguish between these.
I would show your horse and enjoy the experience and whatever your result come away having brought your favourite home.
