Hello, am planning ahead for 2010 (especially as I have to book my transport by end Nov) and have decided that as my boy will be 6 next year that we should try our hand at endurance as having crewed a couple of times for friends this year, it looks like fantastic fun!
Ive had a look at the endurance gb website but wondered when the 2010 dates will be published? I'm based in surrey and looking for rides within 1 - 2 hours travelling time, thanks

Hi Nadia I will email you the middle section of my southeast region 2010 timetable.. Otherwise the egb website has a comprehensive list of events. Not all of them have dates on them yet. Julia |

Welcome to the Nutty world of endurance Nut!
Everyone else has told you plenty you need to know but ask away if you have any questions.
And you can add the Beachy Head ride to the list as well as it's been reinstated as a national ride! I've also added a 64km CR. It's running on 2nd May so will prove perfect preparation for anyone aiming for the GHS or Berkshire Downs. |

Early season Tilford is a great ride not far from you also the New forest.
Mid season Berkshire Downs and Windsor and Breamore
Later Barbury Castle, all over the Marlbourgh Downs
To Finish new Park (New Forest) and Bramshill
The Silver Gambler rides are good as they are small semi competitive rides. There are one a month from February through to August with the Championships in October.

I definitely recommend Windsor. It was our first attempt and it is just spectacular. Going is perfect, views equally so.
South Downs was also great and superb hill training.
How exciting for you to be getting into such a fab sport. I have loved every minute of it and can't wait to get back into it when my girl has had her foal and got fit again...rather a long wait, I'm afraid!

We intend to take Notid, Anganate Safinat and possible El Buba on a number of local rides throughout the season on dates that don't clash with the racing. Chances are there will be spare places in the lorry and/ or people to ride with

The flatter ones with fewer gates are probably the best introduction (unless you are like me and need hills to slow up!) Hale Court and Black Knight were flat with few gates as is Windsor. I understand that Berkshire Downs is flatter than some (but havent made it there yet) |

The Silver Gambler is 6 rides over the season in the New Forest.
There are semi competitive. Points are awarded for speed verses pulse rate. You collect points through out the season and you can qualify for the Championships which are held on the Saturday of the Arab Marathon weekend.
They are relaxing ,over lovely courses and are great fun.
The distances start at 16k for the PR up to 40k for the Competitive rides.

Well if you'd like some company at any South East rides let me know. I'm hoping to get both girls out and about next year. Marygold from the start and then Maj later in the spring all being well.
Hopefully taking Marygold to the Brendon TR so if you'd like some company let me know.

Great to hear Maj is settling in Gemma
Nut - glad you're joining the gang, there are quite a few of us here in the SE that will be doing shorter novice rides next year so if you let us know which ride(s) you want to do we can always team up. There's plenty of company around!! I shan't be doing the Brendon TR as that's our usual training route anyway so seems little point having to pay for riding our usual way.
And if you want to box down for some hill training beforehand J and I tend to do quite a bit of training together and you're always welcome to join us |

Pasha, have a look on EGB site here is the link http://www.endurancegb.co.uk/index.asp there's some useful info on there but as you can see from the posts above there are always people happy to help. You can find a contact from your local group on the above site and find out what's going on in your area. There may be some training rides or social events over the winter to get you started. It really depends on the current level of fitness of your horse and various other factors, like age, temprament, and local terrain for training. Give it a go your horse will love it. |

Aw thanks! Current level of training and fitness = 0 Haven't ridden for 5 months lol! Hopefully all that will be sorted next week (keeping fingers firmly crossed).
Just about to move away from what I would consider Endurance friendly riding: big hill (but can only walk as all stones) and hours and hours of off-road, to largely flat with a few good stretches for a Gallop but probably 1.5 to 2hrs max and mainly road work! Do have a huge big (road) hill though! Any good?
Cannot tire him out and he LOVES to hack and explore new places, so would love to have a go on him |

I would say this is a perfect time to start then with lots of slow conditioning work up to christmas then you can start to increase the work after that. Some may say start in January but the weather can have a big impact on your training in Jan/Feb so if you get the basic groundwork done now while we still have fairly good weather up to christmas (depending on where you live of course), but it won't matter as much then if you have to have a few days of here and then because of snow and ice. Set yourself a target for the first ride you intend to do and work towards that, it might only be a 10mile training ride but it doesn't matter, it gives you something to aim for, particularly when you don't feel like riding because it's yuk outside or you're feeling a bit under par It can be hard work at times but gives you such a buz when your horse starts to feel really fit and enjoys going out. Once you start to do a few rides your horse will get fitter and you won't need to put as much training in but I can't stress enough the importance of basic conditioning in the first place. Good Luck, hope you manage start riding again soon. Sue |
