I have just been told by my saddler about a company that produces real sheepskin numnahs for showing which are meant to be fabulous. Sadly she could not remember the company name. Importantly they are not lined with cotton but are real skin with wool on horse side and leather on saddle side which helps keep them in place. I would very much like to get one but a google search has not yielded any results - they all seemed to be cotton lined. Please can someone point me in the right direction? Many thanks
You can get them from wessex horse health - Le Mieux - they are great I use them all the time - very durable and worth the cost. www.horsehealthwessex.com
Back in the days when my daughter had show ponies the only numnah that the show pony people seemed to use was the Courtlea Lambswool numnah - they were fabulous. I googled Courtlea and they don't seem to have a web page but you can get their phone number.
Pricey I seem to remember but looked after properly they will last a lifetime!!
Thanks so much everyone for your advice. I have since been in touch with Courtlea and will be getting one of these for Kid. They sound just the ticket and I know they are pricey but I am sure she is worth it! Thanks for your help again.
We did this all the time with the hunters - bought a sheep skin for £20-30 and then cut to shape.
We made full numnahs and basic pads with them for a fraction of the cost buying from a manufacturer.
Very easy to make - you just need a stanley knife and some old fabric to make a template. Lay the fabric over the horses back - place saddle on top, draw round the saddle to make the template - close as possible for a discrete numnah, about an inch out for a bit larger. Then you just lay the template over the fleece - skin side up and use the stanley knife to cut to shape. Hey presto - your own wool numnah at a fraction of the cost.
No need for keepers as it stays in place - unless your saddle isn't a good fit!
