Posted - 28 May 2010 : 8:34:15 PM OMG I have just been on another website forum and this stupid woman (I can think of harsher things to say about her) has just been explaining to everyone how her horse won't leave the yard and how she has tried twisting it's ears!!!!, whipping it!!!, kicking it with spurs!!! and now jabbing it with her car keys!!!! What is it with people that think beating there horse is going to solve their problems. These kind of people should not have horses. I'm all for giving my horse a slap when she bites me but that is as far as it goes. All violence does it make the horse worse. Is it just me or is this woman and many other people out there that do this totally out of order? |

Posted - 31 May 2010 : 6:01:55 PM Dainty arabs just a thought with the bridle being awkward to put on, We have a racehorse at the yard that took us near a year to be able to put the bridle on over the ears and now is 100% he was not twitched on the ear but we had a chiro practor out and his poll was out of line he worked on it and the problem was fixed made an immediate difference. Also honey used to be twitched by the ear it was a vet that did mention it after about an 1hr trying to sedate her twitching her nose, neck did not work and as soon as we touched her ear never moved. We don't use it very often and not on another horse but honey needed it and was the only way we could get some things done with her and it never made her head shy either though we didn't twist the ear just held it |

Posted - 31 May 2010 : 02:32:46 AM well talk about ear twitching we had a vet out to one of new born foals the vet had to give him his jabs he said just hold his ears (horror) i reply no way i just hold him he has been imprinted and he was good as gold for he`s jab why would anyone want to twitch a horses ear let alone a new born foal!!!!!!!not only was i shocked to hear a request of this on a new born foal i wouldnt let anyone do it on any horse that was in my charge!!(i wanted to get the vet by his ears and see how he like it) this is a thing of the past surelywhen know one new any better then this dark age advice
well as others have said its a disgrace, and barbara iam very shocked that you know of studs and trainers that use such dark age methods please pm me as i would like to make sure i never send or sell stock to these sort of people, infact i`d like any pm about such methods i`d never forgive myself if my horses went through this sort of thing
i remember years ago i sent one of my home bred mare to a so call natural breaker she had Monty Roberts QUALIFICATIONS and i told her that i had join this mare up and that i did not want any old stys of breaking done on her,a week later i pop up to check on my baby and iam so glad i did,the lady admitted that my mare had buck her off and so she tied a dummy to her saddle in short i pick her up that same day!!my poor baby was scarred stiff,i was so cross my choise of words was quite foul and how i kept my hands off her i will never know ,
on thursday i had a visit from the vice pres of the paint society viewing one of my stallions he was amazed to see some of my stallions out together and one next to my mares, and he said how relaxed and quite they are and how nice it was to see them being so gentle, i said gentle handling makes a gentle horse but bad handling is only the handlers bad faults and stallions to need to neck and have a form or companship (sorry about spelling had a few sherrys now)and if you dont know how to treat a stallion then the stallion would be better of without you,(he said ive been to so many yards that jab the stallion while leading or its shut up into a stable and nothing but mayhem when lead out)
again in the hands of fear and lack of understanding the nature of a horses needs be it male or female (not the pre of pain society)but nasty people like the horrible women maybe someone should prod her with keys and whip her see how confuse it makes her feel (bitch) C PROCTOR maybe you should pm us all so we can alljoin in replys to her too

Posted - 30 May 2010 : 4:46:27 PM when I sent my boy to be professionally broken!!! he came back to me completely head shy also had to have the bridle dismantled to get it off. I heard from someone who worked on the yard he never got called by his name they called him the mad Talliban They also had his bridle so tight it must have really hurt him I sorted his head shyness and touching his ears but still had to take his bridle to bits. I find it shocking that you trust people with your horse, then you find out what there really like. |

Posted - 29 May 2010 : 8:59:20 PM We have one that I suspect has suffered this, even after being with us for over 2 years he still has to have his bridle dismantled to get it on and literally just has the headslip. He can't cope with noseband or browband being put back on because you have to go near his ears to do it. It is cruel regardless of how 'professional' those who do it think they are. |

Posted - 29 May 2010 : 2:29:58 PM You obviously haven't been to the studs where "ear twitching" is all too common. It does control the horse but can make them headshy. I know of several studs/training stables where it is often used.

Posted - 29 May 2010 : 2:22:05 PM I used to work for an equine charity where twisting the ear was seen as a reasonable way to subdue/control an animal! The veterinary staff also used this method, and then they wondered why the animals were all headshy!!! I also saw the post the OP is referring to and just could not understand why they thought that twisting the ear would get their horse moving forwards? Surely it would just cause the horse to move his head? |

Posted - 29 May 2010 : 1:11:12 PM I find it's normally a combination of fear & frustration in not knowing how to deal with a situation that brings out this side of someones character (not that that's any defense for the above actions!) |

Why people get off with things like that is beyond me. |
