After a week or so of indecision I have withdrawn from out of our first Competitive Ride of the season. I am so disappointed but my horses well being comes first.He hasn't been quite himself for a week or so. He appears to be quite anemic and this would explain his reluctance to go at anything more than a snail pace...even in our favourite woods. So it's going to be a much quieter weekend than expected! Hopefully this is just a "spring " blip. Our grazing is quite poor and I hopefully can get him a good tonic to bring him back up to scratch.

Julia it's because he has an irregular heartbeat that is missing a beat (perfectly healthy, some horses just do this apparently), if the vet only counts what they hear, then it is low (although never usually THAT low), if they count the missing beat (which some vets do) then it is in the more normal range, and Trilby doesn't know before she sees a vet which way it will be taken.
40 and 43 is very good - I used to have a horse that I would struggle to get under 50, nothing to do with his fitness etc. just so wound up by his surroundings (and he hated vets, especially male ones, then there was the vetting with the attendent llamas... |

Heartrate of 22!!! Thats nearly dead isnt it?
V jealous. Spider started on 40 and ended up on 43 - so much for arabs having low heartrates. |

I'm so sorry to hear that Sandy - but at least you know exactly what the problem is now, and I hope he has a very speedy recovery.
Trilby is now absolutely paranoid about Charlie's back and was having kittens before the trot up at Primrose - he periodically suffers behind the saddle area and she's got to the stage where she imagines he's not right when he's ok...his 5th saddle is due to arrive this week...Mind you he was absolutely fine last Sunday - starting heartrate was 22, final one 32!!! so she got her grade 1.

It would appear Laddie has a very very sore back....behind the saddle area towards the front of the pelvis.
The vet has checked him over and we have some Danilon to help the inflammation.
I have booked a really good sports massage lady that I know. After chatting to her she said all the clinical signs led her to believe he had slipped or done the splits in the field.This is precisely what he did a few weeks ago! I had totally forgotten as he seemed fine at the time!
So hopefully we can start to get him mended. |

Great to see you all enjoying yourselves...Julia you made me laugh - I would love to have seen the vets face!!

Congratulations Linda! I saw you walking across the yard but didnt see Lily. We had a slight problem with the vetting at the end. Spider took a huge and unreasonable dislike to the younger tall vet and wouldnt let him within 3 feet. It was really embaressing. I had to ask if it was ok if he could be vetted by the shorter vet without a hat  Poor young vet gave me a lecture on getting more tall men on the yard - yeah there are loads of those on a livery yard full of short horses!! I expect he was offended, horses are so un PC. |

Yes the start time was horrendous - our two ran away from us in the dark when we tried to bring them in  But the ride was very enjoyable, so proud of Lily getting a grade 2 on her first solo CR,great to see you at CP1 Sandy, hope you got away at a reasonable time, & that Laddie is back on form soon. |

Sorry to hear this Sandy, hope he is back to himself soon. It was a lovely ride, even though we did have to get up at 4.30 AM !!! to get there for our 9 ish starts... |
