Right got a flesh wound to the left of the o/s fore, leg swollen and hot so must of hap pend a few hours before i brought him in. Phoned vet advised me to hose-gently wipe around the site with hibiscrub dilute-put on sudocreme and bandage, take off and check in morning on box rest. Bute and anti-biotics have been picked up. What can i do to try and minimise the scar and maximise healing. It's on the same leg as his cut over a year ago.

Its about inch long and and 4mm deep

thanks guys in advance

Angelarab,
Sorry, I've only just noticed your question. Glad to hear your Vet is happy with progress!

I've succesfully used copper sulphate on proud flesh on Kharidian and ended up with NO scarring - but as it is used rarely nowadays I had to buy in bulk from an agricultural merchant (2.5kg I think and I've only used a teaspoonful so if anyone wants any just bear me in mind as I can supply plenty)!

I have used it when the wound is no longer "yucky" and there is healthy pink skin at the edges of the wound - the only problem being that the skin will not grow "uphill" over the proud flesh: use a soft brush to apply the crystals to the proud flesh asnd it will stick to the moist tissue, cover with a non-stick dressing like Gellanet (?sp) and then bandage. Leave for 24-48 hours, remove dressing and the crystals will have formed a black crust which, when you knock that off will have taken a thin layer of proud flesh with it. Repeat as necessary. It is not painful - when Kharidian had a knock to the front of a fore-leg he could easily have removed the dressing if it had irritated him; he didn't and he stood to let me repeat the treatments without even having a headcollar on. The crystals do not damage the good tissue and skin, it only targets granulation and each time you will see the new skin working in from the edges - it's quite remarkable.

I must add a caveat: I am not a Vet or Veterinary nurse and was taught this technique by my YO so I accept no liability - I just know it has worked on ALL the occasions I've seen it used and I would willingly use it again.

Vet came last night, he is happy with what i have done so far and that it is not going to create any long term problems to his leg -phew- He gave me flamazine and told me to stop being such a perfectionistLOL

Poor Baz! He is a silly boy, hope he mends quickly.

hibiscrub for the first wash, then only ever salt water after that. Too much water makes for a scar in my experience. Wash once a day when you change the dressings and bandage as flat as you can get it. If it looks like it might get a bit gunky use a good antiseptic cream or flamazine. If it's not a massive wound and he's on antibiotics just savlon should do fine.

Then, once you get the stage where it is staying flat and pink rimmed, wash less frequently and rub in some fuciderm each day - this kills bugs and knocks back granulation tissue in one cream so well worth it.

Hope he mends soon - silly boy!

how do you use the copper sulphate?
Kharidian Posted - 28 Oct 2009 : 10:14:29 PM
Personally I'm not sure about hosing; if the wound is clean I think it interferes with the body's natural healing processes. I would use Proflavine emulsion (human stuff) - costs £10 or so for 500ml from Pharmacist so it will last ages. It stains your hands yellow but I swear by it for "nasty" cuts; it allows the wound to heal from the inside out and seems to minimise proud flesh. If you do get proud flesh, I use an old remedy, Copper Sulphate crystals, as I hate to see Vets cutting it back (even though there are no nerves in proud flesh it is so vascular it bleeds profusely).

I hope it heals well.

I would let the bute and antibiotics run their course and as well as more cold water hosing, three or four times daily, just wait and see how it starts to heal itself. Anything else for now might just encourage proud flesh.
