IVORY WINGS (1981 – 2004)

Ivory is the middle grey with Insar at foot directly behind.

Purchased at 8 months of age by Mrs Jane Kadri as a foundation mare for Al Waha Arabian Stud, her pedigree alone says it all. Bred by Mr. And Mrs D.D.Wright, her sire was SILVER BLUE and her dam SILENT DOVE. The best of Crabbet breeding.

Not a show mare, not an ethereal mare and definitely not a fashionable mare by today's standards – but what a beauty. Grey, as her name suggests, tall and scopey with substantial limbs set at “four corners”, a wonderful length of rein extending to a handsome head and lovely eyes and eye set. In maturity IVORY had a laid-back temperament plus a regal bearing and expression combined with Arabian style. However, as a filly she was very sensitive, causing the first of two memorable incidents. When first turned out after her purchase, she galloped across the paddock and ignored the high tensile wire fencing, flipped over and became hung up in the wire. Living in Norfolk, she had never seen a fence as the fields were separated by ditches. She lay still until released although cutting her legs badly. Likewise, in her mid- teens she was found early one morning cast, with all four legs through a metal bar gate, right up to her belly again waiting quietly for rescue; how she got into that predicament we could never imagine. The vet was called just in case and on his arrival she was pulled out of the gate without any struggle and she was none the worse for wear other than pressure bruises.

IVORY proved to be an exceptional brood-mare, producing twelve foals in all. If she had never had more than her first foal she would still have left her mark within the breed. This first foal was none other than the British National Champion Ridden Stallion IMAD (Golden Cavalier), a multi-champion winner under saddle and sire of Champions. Other off-spring included the Supreme Champion Mare INASS (Gai Warsaw), who bred on well producing the Reserve National Champion Stallion G. IRIDIS among others - INASS was eventually exported to France, sold at the Gucci dispersal. IVORY also had Supreme Champion ISMET (Spearmint) another big winning filly that, sadly, has been lost trace of; INAYA (Spearmint), recently exported to South Africa as a foundation mare for a Sport Horse Stud; IBREEZ (Mamluk), exported to the UAE where he won races and endurance rides; INSAR (Gonorar) and IYAD (Spearmint), also both exported to the UAE as future sires. IVORY’s other children continue to give pleasure to their respective families in this country.

Since down-sizing the Stud all her remaining children have been sold and the only family bloodlines now here comes through the IMAD son, DAAS (ex Dancing Queen) and his full sisters.

A true paddock mare, IVORY WINGS was robust and hardy and lived out in the herd for most of her life. Fortunately, however, she was “at home” in the main yard on that final day. Seen to collapse in the field it proved impossible to stabilize her and she was peacefully released from her agony and anguish on the afternoon of May 25th. The suddenness of her death was a great shock to us all.

IVORY WINGS – what a name, what a mare! She is so missed but will be remembered with fondness and pleasure.
