Another
well contested maiden and the first four are certain future winners.
Benha had only failed by a short head last week at Warwick against
Horizon but won easily here, held up until moving up smoothly
3f out and producing an extra gear to go clear in the final furlong.
The
runner up Kateland had every chance and led 2f out but was outpaced
by the winner. She looks useful and could well improve further
as she had been off the track for three months. Shulah led until
3f out and ran on again at the end having made a pleasing debut.
Belle
De Jour is bred to be a sprinter and didn’t stay but ran with
great promise having lost ground at the start but getting to the
front 3f out before being eased in the final furlong when beaten.
Of the others Bright Dragoon ran on from a hopeless position whilst
Guisburn Szaleem ran well until 3f out.

Several
hard luck stories and the race produced the unusual result of
the winner being dropped in the weights whilst three others were
raised! Helicon’s Just William was very reluctant to start and
eventually set off but didn’t really get racing until far too
late and was nearest at the finish. He may well have won if he
had got off to a level break. Spring Harmony was second best on
the day, always close up and only a length or two behind when
Spring Psalm wandered across him 100 yards out causing his rider
to stop riding and costing him two places. He would have won without
the 8lbs overweight he was carrying.
Chiloe
couldn’t go with them from 5f out but took advantage of the troubles
to pick up third close home. Sprig Psalm should have won by a length or two but the saddle slipped a furlong out
and he became unbalanced losing momentum and drifting across to
the far rail where he impeded Spring Harmony. Artic Lord looked
beaten and booked for third when gifted the race in the final
furlong.

Time: 2min 31
The
favourite Egypt, didn’t help herself by pulling hard and was having
to be pushed along to keep her place 4f out fading from 2f out.
Charan El Nefous was a successful sprinter but used to run over
this sort of trip and made the running at a decent pace but went
backwards in the last half mile. Habibi Bey ran a great race taking
over from the leader until passed 2f out by the impressive winner.
Island Star was held up in the early stages but could be named
as the likely winner from 3f our going easily and quickening clear
when asked. She is inconsistent and hasn’t shown this sort of
form over middle distances before. Borago was always in the right
place and got the better of Habibi Bey in the straight but had
no chance with the winner. Hazzina Bint kray ran well being always
prominent and was carried wide into the straight but ran on to
the finish. Just taurean, PHA Khamoun and Gaynif ran similar races
having won their previous races and coming from well behind here
never getting to the leaders. The time of the race was 4 seconds
quicker than the maiden which must have suited the stayers.

Sanji
was most impressive here, quickly into his stride and kicking
clear when Fayre Abi came to him in the straight. He is better
than ever this year. Al Rehh Janoob and Rawen are both better
over further a remark that probably applies to Pavot Al Kyle who
can never dominate against Sanji and doesn’t seem quite as good
when trying to come from behind. He is very effective over 8-11f
when he can dictate his own pace. Fayre Abi was clear second best
and just needs a bit of help from the handicapper to level the
scores against Sanji at Goodwood.

Time: 1m 21
A
controversial start as Pride of James got a flier after being
given a second chance to line up with the others. Tamagotchi by
contrast was standing still as they set off and was soon five
lengths adrift. On the other hand Tamagotchi often misses the
break and isn’t the quickest into his stride so 6f will probably
never be his ideal distance, he ran on really well here but ran
out of time to win. The only other hard luck story in the race
was Kelway Crimson Sky who was reported to have his saddle slipped.
Pride of James was steadied after his start but was always in
pole position on the inside and shot clear on the home turn never
looking likely to be caught. He has speed and stays at least 12f
but he is always likely to be a difficult ride especially at the
start. Sugar Dandy ran a good race coming from off the pace to
take 3rd but his best form is over further and he couldn’t
quite make it 1st or 2nd 10 times in a row.
Shasta Bree Tarkaan had every chance 3f out but needs a softer
surface against the top Anglos. Special Fx wasn’t disgaced off
automatic top weight and will soon be winning in ordinary handicaps.
Midnight call lost a lot of ground at the start and was nearest
at the finish, quite a creditable performance in the end.

It
was lovely to see the 18 year old Aflame 11 times a winner and
looking really well. He pulled hard and led after half a mile
until fading in the last half mile coming home in his own time
but showing he still has ability. Komandor had to make the running
early but he needs a stronger pace and the others to stop in the
last quarter of the race. He wasn’t suited at all by the way the
race was run. WFA Faisal made an effort 4f out but made no progress.
Dhorgaam made eye catching progress at the same time but was eased
in the final furlong and just retained third place. Riverdance
ran well but was always second best to the much improved Majestic
Omar who is a real stayer and has hardly put a foot wrong all
season.
