Southwell Friday August 6th

Track: Standard

The Juvenile Maiden Stakes
1. Arsene Rupin
Mr. S Harrison
1. Circuit Chaser Mr. S Walker
3. Bestaam Mr. P Collington

Distances: dead heat, 8 7 ran Time: 01:26:40

Winner owned by The Day In Toulouse Partnership. Trained by Miss. G Ward. Bred by M Jean-Claude Di Francesco.

A very tight finish to start the day off as the three year olds fought out a battle royal. Circuit Chaser jumped off in front and made the running and looked as if he was going to sprint away with a win until Arsene Rupin got going one and a half furlongs out and as the two approached the post there was nothing in it and they cleared the line in a blanket photo finish. The judges couldn’t split them and declared a dead heat between Circuit Chaser (Virgule Al Maury X Miss Pfast Track) and Arsene Rupin (Dormane X Djelsomina), the former ran another game race and looks to be a sprinter at heart whilst Arsene Rupin ran a smart race on his racecourse debut and ideally wants further, both look to be smart juveniles. Gill Duffield Bestaam (Dormane X Valina Des Fabries) wasn’t discredited on his racecourse debut and was eight lengths back in third and perhaps didn’t appreciate the kick back.

The Town & Country Farms Novice Riders Handicap Stakes (0-70) 1 Mile:
1. Cal Karsab
Mr. P Brown
2. Vakate Mr. D T Weeks
3. Kateland Mr. M Sheridan

Distances: 1 ½, 3 ½ 8 ran Time: 02:01:40

Winner owned by Mr. K Muir. Trained by Mr. P Brown. Bred by Mr. G Serra.

Paul Brown celebrated his first winner as a jockey when piloting Cal Karsab (Karmah X Sabhah Heluan) to victory in the one mile handicap, always handily placed he went to front six furlongs out and was kept up to his work to win by one and a half lengths from Vakate (Vadeer X CR Angel Kate). The second was always thereabouts and came with a strong run inside the final two furlongs but was always being held by the winner. Kateland (Vert Olive X Fayrelands Gold) was three and half lengths back in third and seemed to struggle when the pace was increased, she stayed on for third but seems best at trips under seven furlongs.

The Pamela Linney Restricted Maiden Stakes 1 Mile 4 Furlongs:
1. Almost All
Mr. D T Weeks
2. Majestic Dream Mr. D I Turner
3. Silver Mebo Mrs. B Vergette

Distances: 15, 11 7 ran Time: 03:08:10

Winner owned by Racing For You. Trained by Mr. J R Candlish. Bred by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The restricted maiden over one mile four furlongs was won in impressively by Almost All (Bengali D’Albret X Emotsia) who was given a fine ride by promising young jockey David Weeks. Always prominent he was sent to the front two furlongs out and ran on purposefully to win by an easy fifteen lengths. Majestic Dream (Frere Des Loups X Autumn Dream) was always chasing and never nearer than second but he stayed on for second and his turn shouldn’t be far away. Silver Mebo (Derbist X Nyali) ran the race of her life to be third and although another ten lengths behind the second she stuck on grimly to her task and seemed to relish this stamina sapping trip and looks capable of opening her account in a staying handicap.

The Jebel Ali Racing Club (Series Qualifier) Handicap Stakes (0-55) 2 Miles:
1. Lile D’Amour
Mr. S Walker
2. Aramits Mr. G Kimberley
3. French Lieutenant Miss E-J Jones

Distances: ¾, 4 13 ran Time: 04:18:90

Winner owned by Mr & Mrs A Connally. Trained by Mrs. S Connally. Bred by Mr. & Mrs. P Deymonaz.

The Jebel Ali Qualifier over two miles was won in resolute fashion by all weather specialist Lile D’Amour (Merlin Al Maury X Daad) - already a winner at Wolverhampton this season - she was given a superb ride by Champion jockey Simon Walker who brought her to lead two furlongs out, and although she has always seemed most effective over a mile had no trouble staying this extra trip; but she was all out to hold the sustained challenge of Aramits (Tornado De Syrah X Serena MSC) in second. Glen Kimberley rode another good race on only his second ride and Aramits was all lout but couldn’t catch the winner, although he went down fighting by three quarters of a length. French Lieutenant (Dedja Des Forges X Sihrea Crystal) was another four lengths back in third and was a showing a return to form.

The Mikeno Handicap Stakes (0-85) 5 Furlongs:
1. Benedikt
Miss J Buckley
2. WFA Leopard Mr. D T Weeks
3. Olivphaya Mr. P J Murphy

Distances: short head, ¾ 6 ran Time: 01:08:30

Winner owned and trained by Mr. P Brown. Bred by Mrs. G Duffield.

The five furlong sprint handicap gave Paul Brown his second winner of the day and his first double as a trainer when Benedikt (Bengali D’Albret X Duiker(Galeon) just held on by short head from the fast finishing WFA Leopard (making his racecourse debut for new owners Dublcheck Limited). The winner won a big handicap at Newbury in 2002 but had been disappointing last season and this saw a return to form. He was always well weighted off nine stone nine; he was always prominent and showed real determination to hold on to his advantage at the line. WFA Leopard (Bengali D’Albret X Lapsana) made a pleasing seasonal debut moving up into second with a strong run but spoiled his chance slightly by hanging in the final one and a half furlongs, and was just beaten at the line. Whilst Olivphaya (Vert Olive X Phaya) ran her usual game race three quarters of a length back in third and was gaining with every stride at the finish.

The “Hope To See You Soon Sally” Graduation Stakes (Anglo & PBA) (0-115) 1 Mile 4 Furlongs:
1. Inspector Morse
Mr. D T Weeks
2. Anukis Mr. D I Turner
3. La Perruche Mr. P D Rondel

Distances: 2 ½, 2 6 ran Time: 02:54:50

Winner owned and bred by Mr. T J Day. Trained by Mr. J R Candlish.

Inspector Morse (Eaglescliffe X Maher) made it two from two as he readily galloped his rivals into submission over the one mile four furlong trip, he led from half way and after being briefly headed by La Perruche (L’Estragon X Iron Bird), he was soon back in front and galloped away for a comfortable two and a half length victory. La Perruche seemed to hit the front too soon and wasn’t helped by the jockey putting up eleven pounds overweight, she ran another good race and was a decent third. Anukis (General Gambul X Selkis)was a clear second and pulled clear of La Perruche on the run in, this was her best race to date and she benefited from a good strong ride from David Turner, she was clear of the rest and seems to be getting the hang of things.

The Clarendon Stud Handicap Stakes 1 Mile:
1. New Caprice
Mr. S Holdsworth
2. Djeldor De Bozouls Mr. P Collington

Distances: 6 2 ran Time: 01:57:30

Winner owned and bred by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin R Al Maktoum. Trained by Mr. W Smith.

The final race boasted just two runners – multiple Group winner Djeldor De Bozouls from Gill Duffields yard and owned by Shiekh Hamdan, and maiden winner New Caprice from Bill Smiths and owned by Sheikh Mohammed. Much to everyone’s surprise Djeldor De Bozouls was given a six lengths beating by the young upstart New Caprice, this mile trip seemed to suit New Caprice (Newday X GV Camille) more than the one mile six furlongs of Exeter where he was well beaten by subsequent Group winner CS Al Wahed. Djeldor De Bozouls (Dormane X Udjella) was bitterly disappointing again and seems to have lost all his enthusiasm for the game.
