Hi Tina,

Bit early for tips but I will do nearer the time and thanks for flagging Arabian racings answer to Royal Ascot, its a great day with some amazing Group races with runners from all over the Europe and some thrilling handicaps, the opener is always the best and most competitive. You can dress up or go casual and remember the whole day is free to enter and there are some great themed Arabian tents on display, its a real show case of Dubai companies and holidays, they also usually have a free draw for a car, best dressed lady and best hat, with gold bullion prizes (friend's grand daughter won about 14k apparently!).

Great day out and thoroughly recommended.

Ooh thanks Paul, sounds so different and really looking forward to it.

I really wish they'd bring arab racing back to Aintree, used to love it there and now its such a showcase racecourse, it would be a wonderful day, I'm sure

Prize money and sponsorship boost

for Dubai Summer Festival

Prize money for the International Arabian Race Day on Sunday, 18 July, the third and final day of Newbury Racecourse’s Dubai Summer Festival has been boosted by the addition of an eighth race which will be sponsored by Meydan, the iconic home of the world’s richest horse race, the Dubai World Cup.

Meydan joins a host of high-profile international supporters of the unique race day which is staged under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and has been promoted as a European showcase for Arabian racing since 2003. The prize money offer for the day now totals £129,000.

The Meydan International Stakes run over one mile and two furlongs for four-year-olds and upwards will be the second race on the card which gets underway at 2.05 p.m., with the Emirates Airline Premier Handicap. The award winning airline, together with luxury hospitality group, Jumeirah, has been a sponsor and an integral part of the promotion and marketing of the event for the past seven years.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Stud, which is home to the world’s finest team of Arab stallions, is responsible for the feature race of the day, the £40,000 Shadwell International Stakes, one of three Group 1 events on the programme.

Also enjoying Group 1 status are the Emirates NBD Hatta International Stakes and the Al Hai Group Zabeel International Stakes.

The Emirates Equestrian Federation which made its debut at the event last year returns in support of a Group 2 contest, with the Jebel Ali Racing Club completing the line-up of race sponsors.

In another first for the Dubai Summer Festival, starting stalls handlers’ clothing will carry the name and logo of the Shadwell Stud. The innovative commercial agreement covers all three days of the Festival where Shadwell is responsible for five thoroughbred races, including the Group 2 Shadwell International Stakes and Listed Shadwell Beech House Stud Stakes on Saturday.

In addition to owners’ prize money, FHE in conjunction with the National Academy of Indian Payroll will provide a prize of £300 to the stable adjudged to have the best turned out horse in each of Sunday’s eight races.

Each of Sunday’s eight Arabian races will be made available to view in betting shops around the country via TurfTV, further enhancing the profile of the sport within the UK racing community.

Why did the Arab racing stop at Chester Racecourse? Love it back there because its not far from me. Purely selfish reasons but...

Hi All,

Dubai Day preview will be posted tomorrow night because SOMEBODY decided it would be a good idea to close the entries 5 days before the meeting rather than 12 days as normal (I am just as annoyed as everyone else, becuase this will lead to a mad scramble for jockeys).

Never mind....onwards and upwards!

Full entries for Dubai day are now up, the handicaps look as competitive as ever and with no Sheikh entries out of the twenty strong field in the first race its guaranteed to go to a smaller owner trainer. We have five entered in the first so hopefully one will win a little prize money behind Dargali and Maghazi who are both very well in and highly unexposed. But you need a lot of luck in such a big field and good jockeys so best of luck to all connections.

Dubai Day 2010 – Preview by Paul Simmons

Newbury 18th July

1st race – The Emirates Airline Premier Handicap Stakes 0-75 over 7 Furlongs:
An difficult race to predict with several having serious chances including lightly raced unexposed maidens like Maghazi and Syrah Gris, recent smart handicap winners Dargali, Flashcat, Wikkara and Pinkie Tuscadero. That said the winners of this race tend to follow a similar format with the last two winners both being well weighted relatively unexposed maidens. The selection therefore is second season maiden handicapper Miswadah who was a third in this event last year (beaten a head and a neck) on only her fourth ever run off a mark of 68 which she runs off again, she was third to Pinkie Tuscadero over this trip at Hereford on her seasonal debut, she is now 2 lbs lower and that race will have put her spot on for this and she will take all the beating. Dangers come from near top weight Dargali who looked extremely impressive in disposing of Flashcat (Sakeena Sky Zayin well beaten in 4th) at Huntingdon over this trip (Flashcat franked the form when winning at Fakenham over this trip beating Syrah Gris 2nd, Sabden 3rd and Jamaahir), connections also won this event last year. Whilst the Adam Newey yard have a good record in this race with connections winning it three times in the past, of his 4 entries the best looks to be Pinkie Tuscadero who looks revitalised this term, 2nd to WFA Leopard over 6 furlongs at Wolverhampton in May she got the better of a titanic battle with Nasheet over this trip at Hereford off a mark of 67 and although 5 lbs higher looks capable of playing a hand in the finish; stablemate Wikkara is unbeaten in 2 starts this term from 8-9 furlongs winning last time by a head from Star Valentina.

2nd race – The Meydan International Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
A fascinating addition to this race meeting and the tentative selection is Mu’Azzaz from the powerful Julian Smart yard, a winner back in the UK in 2008 over 9 furlongs he has since won in Qatar in February this year over 11 furlongs in the Musheires Cup, whilst his placed efforts include 3rd in the Group 1 UK Derby and 4th in the Qatar Derby, he looked smart when coming 3rd to Nashwan Al Khalidiah at Newmarket over 8 furlongs in a Group 2 event (beat Tidarbret) and looks capable of taking this event. Dangers come from Bill Smith’s Genuinely At Risk who looked smart last term winning twice over 7 furlongs and this trip where he beat subsequent dual winner Tidarbret, he won well on his seasonal debut at Wolverhampton over 8 furlongs (beating Mi Temps De Piboul) and should be there at the finish. Whilst Mi Temps De Piboul was fourth over course and distance last year (G1 Hatta) and also won her maiden over this trip at Foss Las, she’s been in good form this term including beaten less than a length behind the smart Tidarbret over 8 furlongs at Wolverhampton. Tidarbret won the Breeders Cup last year and has won twice this term from 8-10 furlongs at Huntingdon and Wolverhampton and wasn’t disgraced when 4th to Nashwan in a Group 2 event last time out and deserves to take his chance.

3rd race – The Emirates NBD Hatta International Stakes (Group 1 Mares only) over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
The selection is dual Group winner Nokomys who has runner up in this event for the last two years and has been in superb from this season including winning the President of the UAE Cup at The Curragh over a mile (beating subsequent Group 1 Coupe De Europe winner Raqiyah) and then going down by a neck to Adjinn D’Aroco over course and distance last month and will be hard to beat this year in this mares only event, she can gain her first Group 1 victory. Opponents include last years French Breeders Cup winner Al Anqa who also landed the Zayed Arabian Cup in Germany before chasing home Raqiyah in the Group 1 Qatar Derby over this trip, she has since been placed twice in France including when 2nd to Muqatil Al Khalidiah in a listed race in Holland last week. Whilst Iftekhar ASF looks to be a smart recruit to the ranks having won twice including the Local Bred Arabian Oaks over this trip and then following up in the Al Zubara Cup over 1 Mile 1 Furlong in Qatar.

4th race – The Shadwell Dubai International Stakes Group 1 over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart recruit Adjinn D’Aroco looks capable of taking this event for champion trainer Gill Duffield, he was a class act in France last year winning the Prix Toustem and running 5th in the Group 1 UK Derby, and he looked right back to his best when beating Nokomys and Al Janoob over course and distance last month and will be hard to beat in his current form. Jaafer looked amazing when winning the Group 1 Kahayala Classic at Meydan in March and ran a superb race when 2nd to Nashwan Al Khalidiah over an insufficient mile in a Group 2 event at Newmarket last time out and is a tough horse to pass. Whilst Jalab Al Khalidiah was a classy performer in France last year and won the Prix Djerba at La Teste over this trip before following up in the Group 1 Shadwell Manganate at Deauville, he wasn’t disgraced in March when 5th to Jaafer in the Group 1 Kahayala Classic and won with some authority when landing the Group 3 Coupe De Sud Ouest at Bordeaux over this trip in May. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Quorman Des Vialettes is a decent performer but may find this trip a touch on the sharp side, he was beaten less then 2 lengths when 4th to Manaal over course and distance last Friday in a Premier Handicap.

5th race – The Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes (Group 2 for 3 yrs old only) over 7 Furlongs:
The French trained runners have a great record in this event and the selection is Monsieur De Watrigent’s smart juvenile filly Salaamah who has won 2 of her 3 starts in France this year including the Prix Djebella over 7 furlongs in April in Toulouse and the Fedora over 7 furlongs in May, she has experience and class and should land this competitive renewal. Julian Smart has supplemented two impeccably bred individuals Aaber and Djeldora for Al Shahania Stud, preference is for the latter who is full sister to Group winners Djelmane and Djabaril and who’s breeding suggests this trip will suit and is likely to be mature enough to make her presence felt. Whilst Prince Dormant ran with promise when 4 lengths second to Al Hasem over 7 furlongs at Fakenham against older horses and can make his experience count. HH Sheikh Hamdan’s Balik D’Albret is impeccably bred and was an encouraging 5th on his debut at Fakenham over this trip.

6th race – The Jebel Ali Racecourse Premier Handicap Stakes 0-115 over 1 Mile 5 Furlongs:
Gill Duffield has won this race numerous times in the past for HH Sheikh Hamdan with Al Mannsoub winning last year and Aljaareh before that, once again these connections have a strong team. The selection is Moshahed who looked good when winning his maiden over 10 furlongs last term and won a match with stablemate Qariem De Faust over 1 mile 4 furlongs at Hereford and can win from his low weight and receives 20 lb from top weight. Theoretically is a Grade 2 winning racehorse in USA where he took the Bob Magness Memorial Derby last year, he has been running with credit since including 4th to Jalab Al Khalidiah in a Group 1 in France, 5th to General in the Group 1 Qatar World Cup and this year 5th to Jaafer in the Group 1 Kahayala Classic; this step down in trip and class could see him winning again. Deolali was an impressive second in this race last year and 4th the year before, he ran a week ago when 5th beaten less than 3 lengths to Manaal over 10 furlongs and should be sharper for the run and can be counted on to land a place again.

7th race – The Al Hai Group Zaabeel International Stakes (Group 1) Over 6 Furlongs:
Nashwan Al Khalidiah is a talented performer and won the Group 1 UK Derby back in 2008, he beat Emmamer when winning the Group 3 Damas Group race over 7 furlongs in France in May and looked to have plenty of speed when winning the 8 furlong Group 2 event at Newmarket from Jaafer on the 7th and can use his smart turn of foot to land yet another Group 1 victory. Threats come from the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s smart Karte D’Or who won the Prix Jacques Fabre in France before showing impressive sprinting credentials when powering home at Fakenham from Kalikeauba and Joybell over 8 furlongs. Whilst Altobello won the juvenile race here last year in awesome style and was third to Nokomys over a mile at The Curragh, before coming 6th to Nashwan over a mile last time out and will appreciate this step down in trip. Hidalgo won over this trip at Wolverhampton and was a good second to Zayin Barakaldo over this trip at Kempton Park and may sneak a place. Nimr has won 3 times in Qatar since December including the Wadi Al Sail Cup and was 4th to Quaolina in this race in 2008.

8th race – The Jumeirah Group Handicap Stakes 0-90 over 1 Mile:
Another race that has been farmed by the powerful Gill Duffield yard over the years including last year when winning with Riko, this year the selection is HH Sheikh Hamdan’s lovely mare Laqataat who looked to have a smart turn of foot when easily winning her maiden over 7 furlongs at Fakenham in June, the selection of jockey Phil Collington and will be hard to beat. Stablemate Menwaal also looked a potential star when winning his maiden at Wolverhampton over 1 mile 2 furlongs and can’t be discounted. Whilst Nasheet was just touched off over 7 furlongs behind Pinkie Tuscadero, and smart multiple winner Whisper, who has won from 6 – 12 furlongs (easy winner at Fakenham in June), has an excellent chance getting a stone from top weights.

Hi C,

I hope it does rain as it will slow them all down in the opener so my mare Sky might just be able to keep up with them till halfway.

Final selections will appear tomorrow night as normal after the declarations.

Thanks Linda see you Sunday I am off to get a spray tan, my teeth whitened and a bit of botox for my annual TV slot where I can guarantee I shall no doubt get it all wrong. The only horse I can say to definately not back is Sky who's retirement has been post poned due to my other ones shoulder injury which has put her out for the season, she hopefully won't be last and unless there is a deluge of rain she will be caught flat footed. Never mind special prize for anyone who notices whats different about my racing colours!!!!

Apologies for typo's....in my defence it was late!

Dubai Day International Arabian Race Day 2010 by Paul Simmons

Review - Newbury 18th July

On Sunday the 18th July Newbury racecourse once again hosted one of Europe’s finest and biggest Arabian racing meetings the Dubai Day International Arabian Race Day featuring top class International Arabian racing performers from all of the world including: Qatar, Dubai, France, Iraq, America, the Netherlands, Belgium, Oman, Saudi Arabia and of course the UK; all competing for a total prize fund of £130,000 spread across ultra competitive handicaps and three championship Group 1 races and a Group 2 Juvenile championship. This event once again made the thoroughbred world sit up and take notice of the Arabian horse who’s beauty is famed throughout the world, but who’s performance abilities are rarely acknowledged. Over 16,000 spectators watched a thrilling days racing with some exceptionally close finishes not only in the handicaps but also in the Group events, and the Tote reported a 20 % increase in turnover with £100,000 in bets taken on the day.
The day began with the ever popular Emirates Airlines seven furlong premier handicap featuring 17 runners and won in superb style by Welsh owner and trainer Delyth Thomas’s useful gelding Jaamahir ridden by Sophie Doyle, followed by the inform Qatar based trainer Julian Smart scoring two victories with the tough Mu’Azzaz in the Meydan International Stakes and Group 1 Kahayala Classic winner Jaafer winning his first UK Group 1 when taking the Group 1 Shadwell Dubai Stakes for HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani, both piloted by an inspired Alan Munro. The Group 1 Emirates NBD Hatta Stakes proved to be a spectacular race with Jane Haddocks British bred mare Nokomys (leased to Athbah Stud) just getting up by a short head from Qatari mare Al Anqa for UK trainer Bill Smith and jockey Simon Walker, whilst French raider Salaamah (ridden by Jean-Baptiste Hamel) also won a thrilling finish when just getting home by a head from Belgium contender Omni DA. The day finished with two competitive handicaps won in superb style by Champion trainer Gill Duffield’s Takaamul in the Jebel Ali Racecourse Stayers Handicap (piloted by an in form Sophie Doyle) and the beautifully bred and potential superstar colt Menwaal in the Jumeirah Group Mile Handicap, superbly ridden by Martin Smith. However, the most impressive performance of the day was Al Khalidiah Stables incredible colt Nashwan Al Khalidiah who blew the opposition away with a pillar to post victory in the Al Hai Group 1 Zaabeel Stakes sprint under a confident Jean-Baptiste Hamel.

1st race – The Emirates Airline Premier Handicap Stakes 0-75 over 7 Furlongs:
An extremely competitive renewal of this ultra competitive handicap saw 17 classy handicappers go to post all of which had a solid chance of getting in the frame. The field broke from the stalls quickly with Unshooda, Sabden, Sakeena Sky Zayin and Pinkie Tuscadero all showing early speed with the rest of the field fairly well placed in behind. However, as they approached the two furlong marker the race began to unfold as Dakaran forged her lead inside the two furlong marker with Billoube and Jamaahir both snapping at her heels. As they hit the final furlong Dakaran still had the initiative under a determined Rachel Kneller but Sophie Doyle was galvanising a strong run from Jamaahir and as these two fought it out inside the final furlong it looked as if Dakaran was going to get home; but an energetic Doyle refused to be denied on Jamaahir (Makzan x Tikis Tiffany) and drove him to a neck advantage just inside the shadow of the post for a popular victory. His delighted and elated Welsh owner and trainer Delyth Thomas was almost speechless after this 16/1 shot got home. “He’s such a lovely horse and tries so hard, I can’t quite believe he’s won but I think it would have broken my heart if he had been second yet again; it’s a dream come true to win here and Sophie rode a superb race.” 20/1 shot Dakaran (Karmah x Djaxy Des Forges) has looked slightly inconsistent to date, she won well over two miles at Wolverhampton before doing nothing at Fakenham, but she looked like a revelation here galloping strongly home inside the final two furlongs and showing a decent turn of foot and was unlucky to be denied victory inside the final furlong and there is clearly plenty of improvement in Sarah Saunders plucky mare. Three lengths back in third was Helen Bona’s smart gelding Billoube (Bengali D’Albret x Billou Al Maury), he made strong headway inside the final three furlongs and was a solid second inside the two furlong marker before the final stages but he stayed on strongly for third on his seasonal debut, and full credit to his trainer to get him here in such good heart. Whilst Maghazi (Chndaka x Nirva De Cardonne) ran a brave race under top weight back in fourth and stayed on well inside the final furlong and will be interesting when upped in trip.

2nd race – The Meydan International Stakes over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
A fascinating addition to this race meeting and a quality field of seven went to post. HH Sheikh Hamdan’s eye catching homebred mare Haneen led the field at a strong gallop throughout with Genuinely At Risk, Mu’Azzaz and Tidarbret in behind. As they approached the final two furlongs Steve Harrison drove the Middleton Stud’s imposing British bred entire Tidarbret into a decent lead with Mu’Azzaz hard pressed and one paced galloping in behind under a energetic ride from Alan Munro, but as they entered the final furlong the seemingly reluctant Mu’Azzaz (Amer x Massamarie) found his second wind and responded gamely to Munro’s urgings and passed a tiring Tidarbret to win going away by two and a quarter lengths for Qatar based trainer Julian Smart and owner and breeder HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani (Al Shahania Stud). Speaking afterwards winning trainer Julian Smart said “I was confident he would win today, he does have a very relaxed way of racing and requires plenty of driving to win but Alan rode him perfectly today and its great to have a winner at such a prestigious meeting.” Tidarbret (Bengali D’Albret x Iktidar) lost nothing in defeat and ran a brave race, he picked up the pace two furlongs out and ran his heart out all the way to the line but couldn’t go with the winner and he remains a smart performer. Genuinely At Risk (Doran x Djenuine) looked to be travelling well throughout until he came under pressure three furlongs out and looked one paced until staying on well in the final furlong to take third from a tiring Haneen (Prince D’Orient x Maheba De Piboul).

3rd race – The Emirates NBD Hatta International Stakes (Group 1 Mares only) over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
Arguably the most thrilling racing finish of the day and a spectacle rarely seen in Group 1 races as the top class mares Nokomys and Al Anqa fought a battle royal for victory with the older mare Nokomys gaining a deserved victory having finished second in this event for the last two years. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s useful mare Kerbelle Lotoise setting a scorching gallop from the start with Iftekhar, Nokomys and Al Anqa all travelling well in behind, as they entered the final three furlongs Iftekhar went into a brief lead before Al Anqa asserted her authority inside the final two furlongs. As the reached the final furlong it was nip and tuck all the way as Al Anqa and Nokomys went head to head for victory, with Nokomys going into the lead inside the final half furlong before Al Anqa headed her briefly again and British bred Nokomys (Amer x KTP Mystic Flight (Wiking)) in the dying strides of the race under a phenomenal ride by Simon Walker just getting her up on the line for victory by a short head for owners Athbah Stud Ltd and trainer Bill Smith. Speaking afterwards winning trainer Bill Smith said “She’s a great mare to train so tough and genuine and deserves to win this after being the second for the last two years, and I am pleased for Athbah Stud and her breeder Jane Haddock.” Al Anqa (Amer x Altesse D’Aroco) lost nothing in defeat, last years French Juvenile Breeders Cup winner ran a superb race attempting to go clear inside the final furlong but she couldn’t shake off the relentless Nokomys and just lost out to the more experienced mare in the closing stages. These two were a good ten lengths clear of Qatar local bred Oaks winner Iftekhar (Amer x Arc De Ciel) who was one paced inside the final furlong but kept up to her work to hold off pace setter Kerbelle Lotoise (Kerbella x Dheila Lotoise).

4th race – The Shadwell Dubai International Stakes Group 1 over 1 Mile 2 Furlongs:
A quality field went to post for the richest race of the day as impressive Group winners Jaafer, Adjinn D’Aroco and Jalab Al Khalidiah took on smart Royal Cavalry of Oman stayer Quorman Des Vialettes. The field broke well with relentless galloper Quorman Des Vialettes attempting to draw the sting out of the tail of the field, as they entered the home straight it was Adjinn D’Aroco under a strong Tadg O’Shea who went into a clear lead with Jaafer stalking menacingly in behind and Jalab Al Khalidiah cruising in the pack. However, the writing was on the wall at the two furlong marker as Alan Munro unleashed a devastating turn of foot from Jaafer and this powerful grey stallion powered into a clear lead with Adjinn D’Aroco and Jalab Al Khalidiah fighting it out in behind for second. Jaafer (Amer x Madjela) won going away by an impressive three lengths for trainer Julian Smart and owner HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani (Al Shahania Stud). Commenting afterwards winning trainer Julian Smart said “That was a fantastic performance from Jaafer in such top class company, we always thought he was better on dirt and I think that’s probably his finest turf performance to date and his first European Group 1 victory.” Jalab Al Khalidiah (Amer x Edele De Carrere) chased the winner all the way to line after snatching second inside the final furlong but he had no chance of claiming victory but ran an excellent race to claim second in the closing stages. HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart entire Adjinn D’Aroco (Tidjani x Asbaa D’Aroco) ran his heart out and made bold bid from victory from the home turn but couldn’t stay with the winner and was a shade unlucky to lose second by half a length inside the final half furlong. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Quorman Des Vialettes (Dormane x Khandela Des Vialette) plugged on gamely for the fourth.

5th race – The Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes (Group 2 for 3 yrs old only) over 7 Furlongs:
A strong field of 10 went to post for this juvenile championship and they broke well with Fawzi, Omni DA, Our Princess and Djeldora all showing early speed. As the field approached the final two furlongs Djeldora who held the initiative before Mubher led inside the final furlong, but Omni DA went into the lead inside the final half furlong with evens favourite Salaamah finishing fast and furious down the centre of the track and these two game juveniles shot past the finish line in a bobbing head to head finish. The photo finish revealed the smart French mare Salaamah (Njewman x Amidou Douzaia) just winning by a short head under a great ride from Jean-Baptiste Hamel for trainer Monsieur De Watrigant and owner and breeder HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nayyan. The Belgium runner Omni DA (Ircalan DA x Haliyana El Kendal) was desperately unlucky back in second and look to have victory at his mercy inside the final furlong, but the winners late charge proved too strong. Whilst HH Sheikh Hamdan’s smart gelding Mubher (Al Sakbe x Elisa Du Paon) ran a race full of promise on only his second start, he led inside the final furlong and even when headed he battled all the way to the line and was beaten into third by less than two lengths ahead of Kadesch DA (Djel Bon x Nowara DA) in fourth.

6th race – The Jebel Ali Racecourse Premier Handicap Stakes 0-115 over 1 Mile 5 Furlongs:
Some impressive and useful stayers went to post for this marathon handicap and the finish proved to be thrilling with the previous luckless Takaamul just getting up by a short head from stablemate Moshahed. They broke well and Alan Munro quickly went to the head of the field with 6/5 on favourite Moshahed who ensured a decent gallop was set throughout with Takaamul, Theoretically and Cricket De Loup all handy. As they entered the home straight Moshahed kicked on a gear but Takaamul and Theoretically were travelling well in behind, and when they hit the final furlong Alan Munro was all out on Moshahed as an energised Sophie Doyle drove Takaamul to challenge and these two brave geldings went head to head inside the final half furlong with Takaamul (Djebbel x Valina Des Fabries) under a great ride from Doyle just got up by half a length to win for owner and breeder HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and trainer Gill Duffield. Speaking afterwards Duffield said “He’s been crying out for a trip and I was confident he would run a big race here off his low weight, I knew he’d stay as his dam won over 1 mile 4 furlongs and his sire won the Dubai Stakes, and I am pleased he’s lost his maiden tag after being consistently second.” Moshahed (Chndaka x Nirva De Cardonne) ran an honourable race in defeat and rallied gamely when headed inside the final furlong and remains a classy stayer. Theoretically (Doran x First Ladie) deserves plenty of praise for finishing just two and a quarter lengths back in third under his mammoth burden of ten stone and at his first attempt at this trip, he has plenty of heart and was well clear of the rest of field and will be interesting when dropped back to ten furlongs.

7th race – The Al Hai Group Zaabeel International Stakes (Group 1) Over 6 Furlongs:
Nashwan Al Khalidiah (Tiwaiq x Rayyan (Bengali D’Albret)) annihilated this quality sprint field in awesome fashion making all with a power packed display under a confident Jean-Baptiste Hamel to win going away by over three lengths. The 5/4 favourite never gave his supporters a moments concern as he galloped readily clear from the off to record a devastating pillar to post victory in the style of phenomenal horse to win as he liked for the Al Khalidiah Stables and trainer Jean-Francois Bernard. Julian Smart’s runner Nimr (Amer x Nisaee) was always chasing in his slipstream, he was an easy second three furlongs out and ran on well under pressure to close the gap with the winner inside the final furlong but never got near the victor. The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Mutafani (Amer x Cheikha) looked right back to his best in third (was 2nd in this race in 2008), he was always travelling ahead of the pack and was a clear third three furlongs out and ran on well to the line inside the final furlong to hold onto third ahead of Ircalan DA (Djel Bon x Allssah), but was eight lengths adrift of Nimr.

8th race – The Jumeirah Group Handicap Stakes 0-90 over 1 Mile:
An eye catching performance HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s beautifully bred colt Menwaal who showed an impressive turn of foot inside the final furlong to out point his stablemate Laqataat for victory. They were led for the first furlong by Whisper before Jelvita went to the head of affairs and took the field along at a smart gallop until the two furlong marker. Laqataat (Bengali D’Albret x Qosheeyya) who didn’t get the best break swept into the lead inside the final furlong and too all intents and purposes looked the clear winner until she lost valuable lengths by drifting across the length of the track to the stands rail, this left Menwaal (Chndaka x Synaps) under a great ride from Martin Smith to power into the lead inside the final furlong and to win in fine style at the line by half a length. Speaking afterwards his delighted winning trainer Gill Duffield said “He’s a very nice colt and won that well especially on only his second start and should have further improvement in him. Laqataat is a very nice mare but threw her chance away in the final furlong by drifting across the track.” Whilst the ever game Whisper (The Wiking x Sucha) ran a superb race back in third for trainer Adam Newey, she was always prominent and ran on strongly inside the two furlong marker leading briefly before being passed by the first two she looks capable of winning again when upped in trip.

The review with pictures is now finally up on the ARO site. You have to scroll down past the preview for Dubai Day and I have no idea why that is still posted on the site (nothing to do with me and I have told them to take it down several times).
