Wow, Glo, that is really good but don't lose too much too quickly as it is harder to keep off if you cut back too much. Chick peas are very filling and good for weight loss. Apparently they are also good for helping to stabilise blood glucose levels so good for dieters and diabetice. I think I am going to turn into a chick pea if I eat many more of them; thay have replaced bread (didn't eat much of that anyway and then only the seeded granary) and potatoes. I do miss my spuds, love them every which way but especially chips. Haven't had a chip since the last week in August, drooling just thinking about them!!!!

I've just been out and had just fish from the chip shop, was only going to eat the fish but ended up snuffling up the fish and the batter as well

I sort of like chick peas, I could make them in to houmos with garlic and caramelised red onion on carrot sticks! Would that work!

So long as you don't put anything fattening with them it is fine and the raw veggies are great and filling too.

Keep up the good work.

Heather - 850 calories?! I would die of starvation on that! There are days I eat less, and other more so it evens out but certainly couldnt do that 5 days a week. Id be eating my right arm, lol, and really lethargic. Think Im around 1200-1700 calories a day depending if its a fat day or not.

I make a ham and chickpea soup in my slow cooker. I find it really filling. I like a chickpea and vegetable paella too. As I dont get in til 8-8.30pm most nights I try to eat my main meal at lunch time at work, then have a lighter meal when I get home. That way Im not going to my bed with a heavy stomach.

Well done Glo great start. On any diet I am a believer in the occasional treat like your fish today actually helps us keep on the diet as nobody can keep it up 100% of the time without falling off the wagon completely.
There are no forbidden foods just foods with more calories than others. As long as we take in less energy than we use we will loose weight.
I love chickpeas in salads, stews and they make a low fat chicken curry very satisfying.
This weekend I am going to do a big slow cooker stew with lean meet, lots of veg and variety of beans, I will count calories in the whole thing and eat nothing else from Friday to Sunday apart from fruit and low fat yogurt for breakfast.
When I lost weight before I had veg chilli weekends, I love chilli and could eat as much as I liked knowing the huge slow cooked amount had less than 1500 calories.
Had a look at the scales this morning and 10st 12lb is now just over 10st 7lb so its going and that's so encouraging.

Well done, Glo; keep up the good work.

I have been to my "diabetic" day today and my results are worse than a man who had a heart attack recently; very scary. Just hope my drugs work as I am being very good with my diet; it is really boring and I am not eating anything I shouldn't and am watching my portion sizes.

Keep going, everyone, as you really don't want to be diabetic!!!

Barbara, that is such a shame for you... you are the third person I know that is not one bit overweight and has still become diabetic... we have the idea that only overweight people get it but i dont think you have ever been overweight. I really feel for you because it must be so annoying and depressing to only eat healthy stuff, I try to but I do so enjoy chocolate, coffee and walnut cake and homemade bread WITH proper butter !! still warm....... oh why cant fruit and veg be as nice as that !!

Heather, we like the same things; coffee and walnut cake/sticky toffee pudding are my favourites.

My problem was lack of sleep, never having time at work to stop for lunch/ coffee etc and a stressful job so cortisol (the stess hormone) levels high which increases your blood sugar.

I went to a diabetic self help day on Monday and we had to give out our last glucose and HbA1c results. Mine was off the chart, the only other person with anything like my results was a man who had a coronary a month ago and was diagnosed when he went into hospital after his heart attack: A sobering reminder to keep on the straight and narrow and do all I can to stabilise my glucose levels.

I really do miss having anything "nice" to eat but I need to stick to my dreaded diet as the alternative is pretty horrific! Hopefully once I stabilise I will gradually be able to start introducing the occasional treat. To those of you with a sweet tooth I would just say "MODERATION IN WHAT YOU EAT".

Barbara

PS Keep up the good work with your diets.

Barbara you make a very good point, health and safety has made the workplace safe from external hazards but they have been replaced by stress which is even more most dangerous and difficult to manage.
Hard work and doing a good job is rewarding but struggling with the impossible against all odds is stressful counterproductive and dangerous to health.
I speak with experience of "let's work through lunch", "this has to be done now" or "it's 5pm but can you travel 200 miles to meeting tomorrow". All with no regard for other priorities.
And yes this is relevant to weight gain cos I go for sugar when under pressure and that's down to cortisol.

You are so right, Ari. Stop doing it as the long term effects are BAD! For years I had 105 mile round trip to work every day, long hours, no time to eat and horses to do each end of the day. I am now paying the price and the scarey thing is if it hadn't been for the NHS free health check I would have no idea that I was diabetic because, despite how bad my diabetes is, I had absolutely no symptoms. My diabetic nurses is amazed that I really didn't have any symptoms but I honestly didn't.

Keep up the good work everyone and get into smaller party outfits.

My way of not letting the pounds pile on was to refuse to buy a size larger jeans so when they got too tight I had to lose the weight to be able to sit down comfortably!

Well done Glo! I went on the scales at the vet (little dog in and had to have a general anasthetic) and realised I have at least a stone to lose! (Receptionist changed the scales from kilograms to pounds for me) Lost a few pound today through worry (although she's fine)and lost a lot of pounds in my bank account, but worth every penny!

Well, depends on how much it costs Glo, as you will find in a few weeks it is too big!!!!

Hope you are all doing well with the diets. We went to London last week and took the grand children (half term). We did a Thames boat trip, then the cable car across the Thames and Pizza Express for a meal. It was a lovely day apart from the meal. I could only have less than half on my pizza. Shouldn't have had that much; they do give it to you to take home and then had a black coffee while I sat and drooled watching them all eat their lovely puds. Not sure it will make me live longer but it sure will feel longer!!!

Wow, you have done well to lose over a stone. I must get cracking, not gained but not lost either. Got sidetracked with old dog being diagnosed with early stage kidney issues but he's doing great so I need to get a grip.

Ari don't know how it happened but just do your best. I find it hard to do any thing but eat when stressed, and you have had plenty with your poorly dog.
Anyway its supporting each other that counts through the good and the hard bits.

Not being able to eat much of what I like I have lost over a stone; now less that 7 and a half stone but not by choice! However, the good news is that what were are being told by diabetic clinics isn't right. We were told less carbohydrates (about 40% of your diet), cut out the saturated fats, eat mainly chicken and cut the fat off chops, red meat etc. Low or zero fat dairy products etc. etc. Well, I have spent days and days on the internet and that is bad advice. We should be cutting virtually all carbs, less fruit (high in sugar), only veg which grow above ground (no potatoes, carrots etc.). We need to eat lots of eggs, (bacon and eggs good but no fried bread, hash browns etc.,) nuts and full fat Greek yoghurt rather than low fat.

Even those who are not diabetic would learn a lot from going on the diabetes website. The scientific evidence really stacks up and high fat foods actually reduce the amount of fat you accumulate. It is CARBOHYDRATES that make you fat. I have just ordered a soup maker so that I can make veggie soups really quickly and then I can add thigs to it.

Glo, your house sounds like it will be fantastic when it is finished, jut in time for a new you and then you can have the new dress (I could send you all mine as they are now too big but hopefully I will be OK in them now I am changing my diet again but still no bread, cakes, pizza, chocolates, lattes etc.

Keep up the good work Ari, I am sure you will get there in the end.

PS Very naughty, as I am allowed fat I bought myself a packet of pork scratchings (I love them) only for my husband to look at them and say "You are what you eat"!

I was talking with a lady last week and she said that if you replace half the fat in cakes with bean paste( like butter beans blended to a paste) the bean will counter out the sugar! And it will be low fat.

Haven't tried it yet. But she said it would make cake suitable for diabetic, mite be worth a try!

Also the house that has been done is lovely, just in time for Christmas. Just got some light fittings delivered to day for upstairs.
