Well! I'm finally making the jump and am looking for the next horsy love of my life!

Is it really sad that I have spent all day calculating finances etc and preparing lists??
When I sold Beau I was so heartbroken I kept only my saddle! So I literally am starting from scratch. I hasten to add that I have not yet found 'the one'. I plucked up the courage to make an enquiry and the seller didn't email me back....most frustrating as I am both excited and petrified of making the jump back into the horsey world!

Is it really silly that I spending so long making lists??? And please feel free to drop any hints of things that I may not have thought of lol

Really exciting times for you :D

You will find a lot of people don't reply - found this when I was looking for my first horse/arab - my preference was to email as I was rather nervous about phoning up and sounding clueles, which looking back I was ;)

However the ones that do reply will be more likely to be the sort of person you want to deal with - if they don't answer, not worth dealing with..

Good luck :)

Exciting times!

I love horse hunting for other people but found it terrifying when it was for me. I too started off with emails and got very few responses, not even 'sorry he is sold'. The more i contacted though the braver i got as i think the first time i was still deciding myself that i was ready for another horse but after i had emailed a few i progressed to ringing. In the end i went to a stud though which had a selection for me to see and i could get a feel for how they had been brought up.

Wishing you lots of luck i am sure the perfect horse is just round the corner

Oh and i write lists for everything so thats perfectly normal

I have found that a lot of people that email are time wasters and after you have answered some more than 20 times you lose the will to live and don't bother to reply, also in my opinion if you cant be bothered to phone and spent that 20p on the call, how interested are you really.

Having said that some people email and are very interested and buy with out a phone call or coming to see the horse.

Good luck.

Use the list to remind you what you want to ask while you make a phone call .

But my sister found her Arab via email (followed by phone calls), her search took a while, but she had a very firm idea of who she was looking for, and she eventually found him at the other end of the country, and is absolutely delighted by her new boy. Good luck with your search, it is exciting to look for a new horse. My advice is to find one that has been backed, so that you know whether or not you like their paces, always see someone else riding them first, get them vetted, keep an open mind - a friend of mine searched for ages and then found her new Arab a mile or so down the road. I bought my mare as a four year old from a completely non-Arab person who had been trying to train her as a showjumper, and I found her on a general horse website. I didn't really want to view her - younger than I wanted, grey which I didn't want, and a mare - wanted a gelding. However guess who came home with me - green as she was she had a lovely long swinging stride - ideal for endurance which is what I was looking for an Arab for. (Approaching 9 she is beginning to understand the jumping thing ).

Make sure the owner lets you know roughly how much they want for the horse before you view it. I had a fair idea of the price of ridden or would-be ridden horses (just a look through the AL sales pages gives you a good idea) so wasn't put off by one stud which was reluctant to discuss price until you got there. Then the horse that I was interested in was SOO far out of my budget it all seemed a bit of a waste of time. Having said that I guess I enjoyed looking at the horses. I should have been a bit firmer and would be next time.

Thank you all.

I never considered that emails are probably me hiding behind my pc. Will do as advised and write my list of questions. I dont mind if it takes me a while, I am looking for 'the one'. x

I found Pasch on a horsey magazine's advert and there was only a phone number, but for Armos I emailed first then since the reply was interesting enough phone calls followed, then a visit.Same thing for old Blue.I think an email can be read and answered at any time so it is less "invasive"than a phone call to establish a first contact,if somebody doesn't want to be contacted through email they can write "phone calls only" or simply not write their email in the advert! If they do,they should at least be polite enough to answer even if it to say "sold already".
Anyway good luck for your search, how exciting!!!

Good luck - how exciting

I found when I was buying I was amazed by the number of people who gave one line replies to emails I sent. Quite how you think you can sum up your horse in a few words is beyond me!! I had one person reply with "everyting's in the advert, what more could you want to know..." - the advert was about 3 sentences long with the absolute basics of what it was like to be ridden, nothing about what the horse was like as a 'person'!

I'm now having to seriously think about selling my hugely loved girlie as my daughter has completely outgrown her... although I do wonder whether I'd be better selling my daughter to a 5* home and keeping the ponio as she's perfect for me !! When I eventually advertise her I would rather people emailed and asked LOADS of questions as that way I can be sure as I can be that the home is right. Having said that every time I go to advertise I think I'll wait another week or so, so I reckon she'll still be here at Christmas!

Have you looked at 'horses4homes'? There are some lovely horses, so sad for their owners when life changes, but admirable rehoming scheme.

You would think that people hoping to sell their horses would make more of an effort to reply when an enquiry comes in. I hear constant talk of how hard it is to sell in the present economic climate. If the effort isn't put in that is hardly surprising.
