Hello everyone, I am guilty of not coming on here very often anymore so thought I'd post a question or two. A quick explanation of my circumstances surrounding Maleik. He was a "happy accident" and a result of my beautiful little Arab mare Treebishwm Drucila literally throwing herself at Tes Nabil, she was only 14.1hh and Maleik was so tiny when he was born I decided to give him to my Son Connor, to cut a very long story short after Martin and I split up he took Maleik and I was under the impression he was keeping him for Connor. I last saw him as a 2 year old, Martin decided to move to North Wales and even though his son pleaded with him not to, he took Maleik with him, from then on I tried desperately to get him back, I found him for sale quite by mistake and eventually managed to kick up enough fuss that he had no choice but to bring him home to Connor as a 15hh, 5yr old . I gave him nearly a year to settle with us before trying to do anything with him, unfortunately I could tell by the way he behaves and my knowledge of how he would have been handled that he wasn't going to be as "quiet to ride" as I was told, my Son is a nervous rider so I decided to ride him myself first, so glad I did because he catapulted me about 10ft in the air, cracking 3 ribs, damaging my tendon in my knee and my back is still not right, it happened in May. I decided to restart him at the same time as my partbred Filly and although he was still very anxious we were slowly getting somewhere with his trust, unfortunately I had to stop just before any ridden work due to commitments that meant I could not be consistent at all. They are now still on a break from starting until maybe the spring, I will take them through everything once again to remind them. Maleik has issues when being fed, anyone would swear he's going to attack me as he jumps up and down, ears flat and starts to bite himself on his side and legs, I just tell him to shut up and he has never done anything nasty, I call him a liar, lol. I was hoping by now he'd have realised that he is getting fed the same as the others so would be a bit more relaxed, just to add they are all out 24/7 rugged with ad lib haylage and have hard feed. He becomes extremely anxious in the stable which leads me to make an educated guess that he's been stuck inside for long periods of time and has probably had to fight for food when out, I guess I'm just asking if anyone has had an Arab with similar problems and if I can do more than give him time, love and patience or do you think this will be his personality always? I do not want to give up on him at all, I really want Connor to be able to ride him in the future but this will take time and as I myself have health problems, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, I'm not looking forward to being thrown like a rag doll again, I will use a body protector until I am sure of how he is going, he has had teeth done and back checked, he just gets so frustrated when food is around, any ideas gratefully received as we love the boy and know he is a sweetheart really.

I'm sorry I can offer no words of advice other than time and consistency. Age 6 has been described as the teenage years by some, hopefully with a bit more time to mature he will settle down. Wishing you the best of luck getting him going but do take care of yourself while doing it.

I hit the floor ladt week onto Tarmac road and it's not nice at all. I have bought myself some riding tights with silicone on the seat to see if that helps. Not been able to try them yet as our drive is sheet ice do cannot get off it yet. Not sure what to advise with the feeding issues, is he in company or on his own. On his own I would suggest giving him big fibre feeds so that he gets a decent amount as it will not be as exciting and will last him ages . Feeding smaller feeds may mean he gets more excited as they do not last as long. It's just a thought and that's what I would try to start with. Sounds like he's had a rough time poor boy, I wish you well and fingers crossed in time he will improve for you.
