Has anyone ever used hoof boots for turnout over shoes? I know strange question but my lad cannot keep shoes on for more than two days. He plays so much and has so many spins and turns that he just pulls his shoes off. I have tried barefoot and he was really lame as he is very flat footed. He only was front shoes and has over reach boots on but still he pulls them off. I really don't want him to be turned out on his own but soon he won't have any hoof wall left.

This must be very frustrating when you are between a rock and hard place. This time of year is a nightmare, it has only happened rarely but have known my lad lose a shoe without a mark as if it disappeared. I have no personal experienced of boots for turnout but suspect he will shed them easily in play or they will rub in the mud. This is a long shot only because you mention flat soles and over reach boots; is he pulling them off by catching the back of the shoe? When it comes to my horses feet I trust my farrier

I turned Red out in Equiboots over heart bar shoes when he was recovering from lami as his soles were a bit soft. This was in summer and autumn though - couldn't say whether there would be a problem with it being so muddy at the moment. Best of luck!

Yes it is very frustrating Ari. My farrier is brilliant, he has slightly squared his toes off behind, set the front shoes slightly under but still with heal support and even used ultra thin nails so that when he pulls them off they come away cleanly and doesn't rip the hoof wall. He is shod every 6 weeks so is never aloud to get long. My farrier says he is now at a loss and to probably try going barefoot again which he was all for the first time around when I tried last year. I have put him on Farriers Formula but it took a year for it to work on my other lad but was brilliant.

Garnet, we are very lucky, we haven't got much mud just enough to cover about 1 mm of hoof which is even more worrying.

He is five so I am hoping it is something he will grow out of.

Pasch managed to pull out a front shoe a couple of weeks ago and he's not shod behind so I know how you feel…
I don't know how long he is turned out but I don't think leaving him out many hours daily with boots is a good idea. What about taking shoes out and riding with boots instead?

Have you tried natural balance shoes? They can improve the breakover so the front hoof gets clear before the hind lands, if fitted correctly they should banish forging and shoe removal.

Yes he is in NBS, I won't use anything else for any of mine. I love them but I really am at a loss as to how he is getting them off. Well actually no I'm not after watching him play - he looks like a gymnast with his moves.
