Ok we have 15 weeks till Christmas and for anybody who wants a bit of moral support and healthy competition then let's use this post.
You can disclose amount to be lost no need to share starting weight if you don't want as it's all about whats lost!
Advice, recipes and different ways to diet all welcome.
9 years ago I was 14st and by counting calories got to my ideal 10st 2lb. Have kept it off until I turned 55 and now10lbs of fat has gathered around my middle.
Time for action I didn't loose all that weight to let it creep back on.
So I am 10st12lbs and on a mission to be 10st 2lb by Christmas.

Im not overweight but ideally would like to be 4/5lbs less than I am. I piled on a stone when I gave up smoking. What I really want however is to tone up! I want the tops of my thighs to be 1.5inches less than they are now! My stomach isnt as well toned as it used to be either. Be gone love handles and saddle bags. So thats my aim.
My biggest problem is bread (and nutella).
I think you need to work out what kind of eating regime suits. Some people work better with low fat, others low carb, others lower calories. Im better if I cut down on carbs..but not out altogether! Its hard because I LOVE carbs!

My wee tip..in the evening when you need a snack. I find having cut up lengths of carrot/cucumber and having a philadelphia light dip works.

I will support you, I would like to tone up as well only one problem! You have to exercise, and I don't like that.

Well I did my first day yesterday, didn't cheat and feel motivated.

I need to lose a stone and tone up. Since I was unable to ride tummy has gone to pot! My tip is to lock the kitchen door and hide the key! Seriously though, I'm going to eat lots of healthy salads without the naughty dressings and drink lots of water, starting tomorrow!

I need to lose about 4lbs my problem is crisps, gin,wine and chips not bothered about choccies though. I have no will power at all when it comes to food and drink, i like it

My problem is work, people bring in cakes, chocolate etc and if I'm busy with only small gap between meetings I will eat anything I can find. So I have taken in wheetabix and getting back into the routine of taking in a healthy lunch.
I love chips, wine and curry and food in general but living on my own makes it easier to only buy healthy and not be tempted.
Weekends are fine as I am out all day with dog and horse so hardly ever feel hungry.
Just discovered Laughing Cow blue cheese triangles 25 cals each and very nice on the tried and trusted Ryvita.
Another month or so and I will be mucking out, carrying water and lugging hay nets, that should help.

Sadly this year I don't suppose I will be able to have my usual Christmas blowout; it will bve watching the diet to keep my blood glucose down.

Glo 2lbs is fabulous, I have been good but not been on scales. Barbara, surely a bit of Christmas pud topped with fruit of choice and low fat yoghurt instead of custard will be ok and a glass of very dry white wine.

I think a small glass of red would do nicely but Christmas pud without brandy butter AAAAARRG! And then to have to sit on my hands when the choccies come out.

Good luck with your diets, everyone, it will be worth it when you can get into your Chritmas finery and look amazing.

slimming world is the best. I lost 3 stone 4 lb on it and am still at target weight 10 months later

Barbara, I know you can get diabetic chocolates from Thornton's. Do you inject! You could do a little more before your dinner.

Libby that very well done. Could you explain how it works a bit.

Had a good day yesterday but still the same at 12.7 but it's going down, still I have the will power of a nat, going to have to keep working all day to stop myself from eating everything I can get my hands on.

Hi Glo

No, I don't inject. I actually had no idea I was diabetic.

For those of you who don't know: everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 is entitled to a free health check, If your GPs surgery has not contacted you ring and ask for one. You have to have a blood test first to check your lipids, liver and kidney function and your blood glucose and then you go in when they have the results back and they measure your height, weight, blood pressure and work out your BMI and discuss your results.

I had my blood test and the following day when I got home from work my phone rang to say that my glucose was high and I needed to go for a fasting blood test and then they would contact me again. I went my fasting glucose (plus thyroid function and HbA1c) and the following day the diabetic nurse rang to say my glucose and HbA1c were high and could I make an apppointment. I asked her what they were and she said "Would they mean anything to you" and, as I am a biomedical scientist, I said they would. I was shocked to hear that my HbA1c was twice what it should be, my fasting glucose was twice what it should be and my randon glucose three times what it should be. so I am newly diagnosed and at present am on two different types of tablets. I started on metformin but there wasn't much improvement, if any, so I am now on Sitaglyptin as well so early days yet although there is an improvement so long as I am very strict with my diet.

Sorry, long speil but I hope it will encourage all of you who are eligible to go for your health check as untreated diabetes has grave health implications. They were very surprised that I had no symptoms given the levels of glucose and HbA1c I had. Also, those of you who may have high lipids and/or blood pressure also have long term health implications.

Those of you who are very overweight will also benefit enormously from losing some weight. There is no problem as far as I am concerned with being a bit overweight but being a lot overweight is not good and will certainly affect your long term health.

Barbara, thanks for sharing and raising awareness. I have had thyroid and cholesterol checked by GP and a simple check for diabetes at a work health screening.
9 years ago when I was carrying 4st of fat around with me I had painful back and knee problems all gone now. If I hadn't lost the weight I would be even bigger now as exercise was hard and if lucky enough to be still able to ride I would be being helped on and off a sturdy cob not my Arab.
We got him at 18mths and he was the inspiration that changed my life.
Glo, don't weigh yourself too often just do your best and keep active, as long as you burn more calories than you eat you will lose it. Choose a diet plan to suit but the basic math is; take in 250 cals less than we use we loose an ounce.

Well said, Ari, and a huge congratulations for losin all that weight. I have always kept my weight down by refusing to buy a bigger size jeans; once they were a struggle to get into (strech material these days give you more leeway) I lost the weight so it was never a big issue as there was never more than half a stone to lose. So pleased to hear it was a (wonderful) Arab who was your inspiration; don't they just make life so much better. Their sheer beauty and wonderful nature make every day seem better. When I have a sh***y day at work by the time I have done the horses life seems so much better.

I made an error in my previous post; my glucose was 3 times, not twice, what it shouls be.

No, I passed that many years ago!!! It just requires keeping busy and will power. Not easy I know, but if you refuse to buy a bigger size trousers it will make you lose the weight or go out in your knickers - in my case, not a pretty sight. I think even the horses would be horrified never mind the neighbours.

Barbara, it's only the 7lbs I need to loose but it will be gone believe me. Not going back to fat again, love my Arab too much he is my gorgeous toy boy that keeps me young.
Quarabian, I agree with the dreaded 55 I have been eating more and it's the change in hormones I'm sure. But we are onto it now and active people so the pounds will go x

I must be very lucky then as I don't have to face the dreded hormones, just take a little pill each day for the next 20 odd years till my doctor thinks I'm past it, whatever it is!

OH had trouble getting rid of quite a bit of weight especially after hip op. So Drs. kindly sent him to weightwatchers for 12 weeks. He had to cut out all fat food including his favourite roast lamb but can eat anything else. I buy him their biscuits and crisps and he has lost a couple of stone we have kept up the regime and I've lost weight as well down now to 10.2

OK I will join you (just eaten big chunk of choc cake and bag of marmite crisps... so feeling bad)
I am 9st 2lbs which is 9lbs over the 8 1/2 stone I should be. I am 5ft tall. I will aim to lose 10lb in 10 weeks.
On a diet I calorie count and try to keep at 850 cal a day mon-fri and 1000 on sat and sun. Eating mainly veg, two pieces of fruit and low fat foods, wholegrains and nuts. No fruit juice as loaded with sugar.
I tried the 5:2 diet and it works but I couldnt stand the starving days and felt very tired and cold on those days. My mum has lost two stone in a year doing the 5:2 diet and she swears by it. She is 5ft1" and is now under 8 stone.... its really annoying when your once chubby mum gets to be thinner than you !!

NB: Anyone know what causes constant indigestion ? I have never suffered with it at all..... but now I have had it almost constantly for over two weeks.... burping all day and feeling bit nauseous I went to the doctors a week ago and he suspected a virus? and said go back if not gone in a couple of weeks.

Hi Heather

Could be gall bladder, not sure of the symptoms but those who have had it might help. When I went for my first diabetic consultation the diabetic nurse said "I see you have had your gall bladder out". Well, news to me; wonder who has had their gall bladder out and it went in my notes in error! Do go back and make the Dr do someting if the indigestion doesn't go.

I am just under 5' 3" and weigh just over 8 stones (55kg, it varies by a few lbs) so I don't need to lose much, wouldn't mind a pound or two. My glucose seems to be stabilising although I am being very careful what I eat.

Keep up the good work everyone; it will make you fitter (and your horses less fit - hee heee)

Well it's been just over a week and it been hard work today 12.3 that's a 6lb loss. Just got to keep at it now.
