I think a lot of people are on FB. I still check on AL daily and post on AL - but I've nothing to report at the moment - most of my milestones with Chips have been passed and Roger is still fit & regularly hacking at 21.

The boy has no problem with large areas of bog on Baildon Moor but has upmost aversion to anything natural under his feet and can spook at a bit of dead grass when a tractor is no problem. So long hot afternoon and I take up the challenge to get him to walk over his nemesis a large white bath towel. I rolled it up to an Arab eating snake and he walked over with upmost care lol. After 15 mins lead rope off and and towel fully open and he is following me over it loose with all for feet on it enjoying the game. I was over the moon!
He was more confident when lead rope off so prefers to perform on his terms lol.
I know it's no biggie for some but we both so enjoyed it, any ideas for what next to play with. I am thinking umbrellas and plastic.
Never too old to learn and enjoy Arabs.

Bless him, i am starting with my 4yr old PBA , we backed her start of the year and then she got a rash on one side so needed 3 months off to treat it, then cut her leg more time off so turned her out with her mum and others. Then just as her leg was healing somebody bit her on the back, of course it had to be where the back of the saddle sits so we have started again last week and fingers crossed so far so good. I have now entered a 6 mile egb pleasure ride so whos betting something else happens between now and the ride I need to go down the umbrellas and plastic route too, i do my riding on my own and its tricky on a baby isn,t it when you don,t have an older horse to help you out. Well done your horse for walking over the snake, we get the real ones at ours so may practice with the killer towel myself

Oh no, set backs are frustrating with progress for a youngster and yes very much harder riding on your own, I had a lot of support from trusted hacking pals. Have to confess Ari is now 11 so my achievement isn't that big lol. As for snakes I can remember turning Ari out at 18 mths in gateway where the tractor had left tyre marks and he jumped the lot. Very big snake had left left them track mum!

I do facebook reluctantly as lots of friends send me messages to look at their new horses etc. so I try to go on once a week. And of course the closed thread to those of us who lost horses to the Peel's; always go on there immediately I get a notification in case there is any news.

Ari, how very frustrating, surely nothing more can go wrong! It is difficult with a youngster on your own. I was walking my colt down the road in hand several years ago when I heard a huge tractor and even bigger trailer rattling along at a rate of knots. I desperately looked for somewhere to go, it was approaching from behind and I had on a "Caution young horse" hi vis jacket. I tried to flag him to slow down until I could find somewhere off the road to take my colt but he kept coming and as he got level with me he started shouting abuse to add to the racket. I was a quivering mess and my colt stood there wondering what had bothered me: I had visions of him disappearing into the distance in a blind panic as it was enormous and very noisy but he never batted an eyelid. He was the most laid back horse I had even known.

Hi, Barbara it's Sally suffering set backs with her youngster and so agree the big things are no problem, my boy has never let me down in a crisis but a leaf turned the wrong way can be very scary lol. My boy is 11 and I am 5x times that and still we are learning together and that's what gives me so much pleasure. Could have got a safe plodder to take me into my 50's but would be so bored not to mention aching legs from getting any go forward.

I have noticed this. I no longer post very much as I no longer have any horses. It is very strange after 35 years of having beautiful Arabs around but Anna has gone to a new home in Dorset, hopefully to have 'babies'. It was becoming too much for my OH and myself to cope anymore. I shall, of course, still keep coming on as I do not wish to completely lose touch with horses.

I love seeing updates of people's horses but particularly loved topics like 'tail female' (think that's what it was called) was so interesting! Also the topics about certain types, colour etc, 'show us your Russians' etc!
You can tell I love a photo or 2!
Tamils you must miss your horses dreadfully,
I do go on Facebook but it's not like AL used to be....

I too loved the educational topics like "Tail female" particularly as my mares are taking part in a mitochondrial DNA study at Cornell university; can't wait to see the results but it will be a long while before it is ready fot publication.

I always visit but am posting little this year as Im having a frustrating time with my boy having been kicked in March and still being lame (think huge haematoma on suspensory ligament and a broken splint bone). So not wanting to whinge and moan and with no good news to post I've pretty much kept shtum (sp?!)

Really hoping Ive something good to post about soon. Its a shame its so quiet, its a much 'nicer' environment to read long interesting posts from people in than FB. I find FB is great for quick updates but not in depth chat and discussion

I don't do Facebook, so check on AL every day. AL is so interesting and it has taught me so much and helped me with my young arab. No one I know has arabs so coming on here doesn't make me feel like an Alien.

I have learned such a lot on here and had tremendous support when things not good. Ali Bali, maybe totally different circumstances but my boy had a field accident 4 yrs ago resulting in breaking the very end of his off hind splint bone. Major panic for me but not him who sailed through op to remove the detached bit; no insurance exclusion as useless bit of bone now gone.

Thanks for your good wishes guys, I'm missing riding!

The original injury healed really well and I was 4 weeks into his fitness regime when he has gone slightly lame on same leg (was 1/10 now even less than that).

Vet did say that he thought the lower part of the splint had fused to the canon bone and this might cause the top of the splint to move more than normal which may cause it to inflame and a splint to form at the top which would then fuse the splint bone at both ends and solve the problem once and for all. I am possibly the only horse owner in the country who is desperately hoping her horse is popping a splint!!!!

Ari - Vet didn't want to remove the broken piece, said it was not necessary and that recommended treatment had changed in the last couple of years. He is very well respected so I certainly wasn't going to argue especially when it saved me approx. £1500!

Good that treatment has moved on and to be fair Ari was never lame even with fracture. Advice then was risk of removal was minimal compared with long box rest and no guarantee of ongoing prognosis of possible ligament damage and or chronic lameness.
He was back in the field 2 weeks after op and in walking work 5 weeks later and has never looked back. Would I take same advice if god forbid it happened again? I would have to look into latest thinking and weigh up the risks.
I have heard it said that the splint bone is evolutions gift to vets bank balance, a worry to us and no use at all to the horse.
Good luck with popping the splint and believe me that will reduce in time to something you never notice.

I do FB and it wastes a lot of my time! So easy to post photos though! I too have been disappointed by the lack of posts recently but thought perhaps we are all too busy out enjoying our horses.

Ive been really busy. I dont get in the house til 8.30pm then dinner then shower to dehorse then bed just to start it all again at 6am....blurgh!
I have been out competing my boy..now 5yo at a few ridden shows but mostly unaffiliated dressage. We have our first affiliated test next month. I look forward to it. Keep meaning to post a pic but just never get tound to it.
Ive also been a bit obsessed watching various tv series on netflix so been most unsociable. Worked my way through Breaking Bad (recommended) and now '24', halfway through season 6, so just anothe 2 seasons to go.

Ari, tbh I would have felt better with it out, LOL!!! BUT I respect the vets opinion and he is the expert after all.

Just hope this lameness resolves. Malis was a front leg so not sure if that makes a difference. Vet did say prognosis on front leg much better than on hind, never quite figured out why...

I am sure your vets are right, my experience was a hind and only tiny end of splint adrift so could well be very different. The only concern was suspensory ligament which thankfully was unaffected. I am with you, trust the experts all cases are different.

Had to smile Vik1, I have lost my OH to '24' at the moment. He is around the same place as you. On the plus side he keeps shipping me off to the stables so he can watch another episode. I never argue I mentioned Breaking Bad to him so he is now going to watch that too, yippee more horsey time for me, any more suggestions?

Prison Break...thats next on my list, heard its very good, lol. It has 4 seasons. Dexters got good and bad seasons...10 in total, so that would keep him occupied too.
