I read the story on FB - Oh God what a terrifying thing to happen & for goodness sake why have a 'detachable' tow bar? Seems Landrover don't want to know IMO tow bars should always be fitted permanently - fortunately both horses were relatively unscathed but it doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened, detachable tow bars should be banned !! |

Think that's the link, horrific. I thought this was the incident with the pregnant mares where the trailer slewed off and down an embankment, but this is another terrifying incident. Thank goodness in both cases that the horses were relatively unscathed. |

Please also remember not to loop the breakaway cable round the ball hitch - it needs to be securely attached to a fixed point on the vehicle in order to deploy the brakes if the ball hitch fails. The trailer in question would not have overtaken the car if the breakaway cable had been attached correctly and the trailer brakes had been working. |

Judith is right, the break away cable should pull on the trailer brake if it parts company with the car.
The detachable tow bars do have their place. The pikeys near where my parents live like stealing tow bars, they lost two in as many months, now they have a detachable one that is taken inside. As with all these things they do need to be fitted properly and it's always good to have someone else to double check you've done everything right. |

The latest update from the people who had the accident is that the breakaway cable was attached to the chassis but it failed at both ends. I guess the clip broke too? |

Also remember a faulty breakaway cable earns you three points on your licence. |
