Well sort of. Having found a smashing home for Sami(Spasiba) I am taking on permenant loan a rather overweight welsh cob. Ever since I have loved here and been at my yard I have been surrounded moreorless by cobs a friend and her father bred them and most of my friends had them or cross so it seems that fate has scooped me up and given me a mare bred locally by said friend and her dad.

Fitness regime for both of us I see looming. Wish me luck and hope I can still pop back on here to check on the news and also excellent advice that's given.

Have loved the arabs and part breds I've had and have had so much fun with them, but as I've got older have decided I want something a bit cob headed and who will be happy to poodle round our lanes which are getting busier by the day unfortunately.

Last time on a hack by myself on a dirt road there were 3 kids on trail bikes coming in my direction,I stopped to let them pass and waved at them to slow down which they hardly did, they passed inches from me with roaring engines and all,Armos patiently waited without moving then resumed our walk and that was on a stretch where we always have at least a trot so he was really eager to go.Yes sometimes he will spook at the silliest things but although being sharp (he's an arab after all) he's usually the most reliable horse in the group and will always pass where others won't.
If I was looking for another arab I would be looking into adult horses who have done a lot of trail riding so they have been everywhere-seen it all, many ride arabs like this here as they have the stamina but they are smart and level headed at the same time (contrary to what people think, but that's another story)
Anyway since you have made your choice already I hope you have fun with your mare,of course please stay here on the forum and as you well know

My main squeeze, my lovely long-time friend, is Millie, a welsh D. I adore her. I ride her all over the place -- and while she's not "bombproof", she's pretty darn sane. I'm going to try to train her to drive next :)

Congratulations -- Welsh D's are great!

I quite fancy a Welsh D, we have lots at our yard and they are so versatile plus have that little bit of Arab in them which makes them nice to look at Good luck and would love to see pictures.

So glad you've found something else to ride - wishing you years of pleasure. Think we deserve a photo though..

I like Welsh Ds, my pals have one and she is indeed bombproof, spook proof, can turn her hoof to anything and is a grand looking lady. However she does have her foibles; won't do shoes, difficult even to trim and occasionally can forget her manners and be a tad stroppy if the mood takes her. But a very safe ride for twin girls who have lots of fun with her and their (novice) mum.
I hack out with a lovely Highland who never notices scary plants or insignificant objects and I so wish my Arab was as good. But have to say whenever we have come across something real that has worried them both Ari can be more reliable in a genuine crisis.
Can really see your point about a nice steady carry on and you will get that with a Welsh D. Have fun and I wish all the best.

I swapped my arab mare for a Highland 18 months ago and have never looked back. I was 'of a certain age' and needed something calm and non-spooky and I have certainly found that in Bertie. He has little pointy ears and a long mane so when I ride him it seems like I am still on my beloved arabs. Enjoy your cob, have fun like I am xxx

I have to admit that Esme (full Spanish arab) is far better with big vehicles than my Welsh D. Also, she doesn't make any fuss at all when left alone in the pasture with no other horses in sight. She doesn't kick or bite other horses (my welsh will!) and she isn't on constant laminitis alert, like my welsh who cannot eat more than ten blades of grass without gaining weight.

However, if she does get worried, she's just a thousand times faster at displaying it than any cob I've ever known (welsh or irish). So, yeah, there is that.

I feel AWFUL that I 'waste' Esme. She should be out doing long rides. She's fantastic. Unfortunately, she got a late start, then was stuck with me who has little time. I'd love to find her another home where she would develop, but then I'd lose the best companion horse I've ever had...

Agreeing with a lot that is said on this topic. I am supposed to be starting Mistral, but my back and hips seem to be failing me. It means that swinging softly in canter is harder to acheive and I don't know know if I will be able to cope with the initial possibility of high jinks. For me a cob is not the answer though because my back can't cope with any width.

Thanks for kind replies. The best horse I ever had and am still in mourning for was a three quarter bred arab out of Cranleigh Red Shadow, she was my soul mate and I have been trying to replace her for years. I just feel I have loved all the arabs and part breds but in my twilight years I want something that hasn't got quite the quickness of spin that Sam had you really didn't stand a chance of staying on.
