| Just had a look , the grey is up my way but don,t know anything about him , the other pure bred was one of the ones who came from Native Pony Rescue before she was banned from keeping horses for 10 yrs, fingers crossed they find good homes although the older one Greg had a few issues which they sadly did not tell the lady who bought him, hope somebody gives him a chance and takes him on poor lad. |

To torture myself and make myself depressed, I had a search on horses on dragondriving.com and put them in order by price. The cheapest were the shetland colts at £25, then all the other colts of all ages and sizes that nobody bothered to geld as this would require money and a vet, plus an ounce of common sense.
So, 14 pages in we were still at the £600 mark. By page 18 in the prices crept up to £800 and the horses were less wormy looking. In fact, a few beautiful ones. At page 22 they finally got to £1000.
It really tells you something about the market.
If Defra wanted to do some horses a favour they'd do something to stop people from simply failing to geld on horses/ponies that were clearly never meant to stay entire. I hate to think how most of these horses are now living if nobody even bothered to geld them.
Many of the horses/ponies at the £300-£500 mark would make perfectly good riding horses. If I were to buy a horse, I'd buy another one that was in a bit of trouble....it often doesn't take that much to fix and some of them are simply in the wrong place and have nothing else wrong with them at all.  |

Freya was advertised on Dragon Driving [and PonyAdsUK], as well as her dam [with colt at foot], her sister, her cousin... Plus a few more family members. All for under £500
But then, Splash was advertised on DD for £5000 before we bought her, quite a few of the horses from who are on the yard were advertised there too... Overseas horses, 2 in France, 3 in Spain.
True, they aren't all around anymore, but they were lovely horses.
I think I'd buy my next horse from DD... I don't know why, maybe because DD seems the place to buy the ones who may need a bit of help?? Not the rule for them all, obviously, but definitely true for Freya

Prices have gone down so much even in the last two years.
When I was looking for a simple nice ridden arab/happy hacker I had a max budget of £2000 and I really struggled.
Recently Ive seen a few under £1000 who are more mature/experienced than Jack was when I got him including an 11 YO ridden mare no apparant problems for £600!!
Martha, I also had a look on the website upon reading this thread and was shocked at the price of those ponies  Poor things. I hope they manage to find nice homes. I wish I had my own land and didnt pay livery |

I have my own land, but even so there are only so many horses you can have at a time...
The darn things suck up every minute...not that I don't enjoy all those minutes  |

We can never do anything about this situation, cheap unwanted horses in sales have always been.
We have even worse in our village, a herd of unwanted gypsy colts wandering around for the past year, breaking into private pastures after mares, causing accidents etc. often found dead in ditches :( they are a pain and nobody wants them, police do nothing!!!!!!
Ive bred foals that are not to my standard but make dam sure they are gifted to loving homes. |

I think theres pretty much ALWAYS a reason. Quality stock tends to attract a proper price even now, or at least that was my experience in looking over the summer.

Perhaps you're right Arachnid. I know adverts dont always tell the whole story.
However, when I was looking just over two years ago the only Ridden arabs under £2000 I could see advertised anywhere were mostly either newley backed or in the process of being backed, or 17yrs plus or with faults/injuries where they were advertised as "light hack"

| In defence of the lady advertising the grey arab, we are up in the northeast of england and i know myself in this present climate its very hard to sell anything up here at the moment, quality or not, i have also found that arabs up here are not the most popular horse, i have been trying to sell my pba filly and when people have enquired they have mainly said the same thing too much arab in her, shes 50%, rather than sell her at giveaway price i would rather long term loan that way i will be able to control what happens to her but maybe the people selling these two cannot do that. I do hope these two horses find loving homes but can see the advertisers point in pricing them low as i know how the market is up north, and just because somebody buys the cheap dose not always mean they will not look after them and also dose not always mean there is something wrong with the horse, i was given my arab mare , fingers crossed for them. |

| I dont think its really possible to comment when you dont know the circumstances. I know when iv sold horses iv they've always gone below market value because iv wanted the person who had them to have the horse and its made off with everyone been happy horses still much loved years later . Annoyed me a bit with Mia as its had quite a few comments that I could have got more and they would have had her for the price I got. I just think er NO you wouldnt! |
