My two year old has had an injury in the field as a yearling bending her hock back, that has resulted in a spavin, she is lame on and off for the past year, and if she had a funny 5 minutes, is there any hope for her being able to be ridden in the future!! or will she end up as a broodmare or pet. Have any of your horses had spavin's, and what where the results.

My 19 year old has just been diagnosed with spavin/low grade arthritis. I only asked the vet to take a look at her because she kept tripping, she wasn't lame. When the vet looked at her she had been stabled over night and was 1/10 lame but at 19 being stabled over night you'd expect a bit of stiffness. My vets advice was to keep her working, hacking on uneven ground and trotting poles to make her use the joint. If she's lame the next day she said give her a bute and work her lightly. The vet said the worse thing for me to do would be to "back off" completely and just retire her in a field, once the joint is not used properly it will cease up.

I know how you feel, i have a almost four year old not my arab but my spotty knabstrupper brought him really cheap as a hack for my other half he has a swollen hock from when he was a foal rearing up so the the joint is swollen, he also has sticky stiffle but only when he has a growing spurt he hasn't been lame at all though, i have now broken him in and he has been soo layed back and good to brake my othere half has even ridden him and he is a novice he is going beautiful that i'm thinking of doing dressage i did googled his condition and don'r recomend it wish i'd hadn't and did stop my self in the end,its either bog spavin or DJD i need to get my vet out but am really worried about what he will say and didn't think he would be as good as he is being and am going to be gutted i've put lots of hard work into him i give him a joint suppliment and some hill work and pole work as he is such a good boy if the worst does happen he can be used as a hack suuch a shame so am just going to see how it goes he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort but it is ways in the back of my mind. i supose with yours it depends on what you want to use her/him for. xxx
