Hi

My husband has just had a total hip replacement last week. He has been told that he cannot ride for at least six months. Have googled the subject and have found different answers to whether he can ever ride again. His horse is a lovely ID mare standing at 16.1hh.

Has any AL peeps have experiences of this or anyone that did continue to ride after major surgery and have a success story.

BTW he is a relatively youngish man!

I am not surprised that he cannot ride for 6 months, but I don't understand why he can't ride at all after that.

Because of the new hip being displaced either by falling off or the movement of the horse through the gaits and of course jumping.

A friend of mine has had hip replacements and still rides and competes. Not sure how long she had to wait post surgery but will find out.

Don't despair!

I misunderstood the question. Of course there must be a period of recovery. Six months sounds very reasonable. I know quite a few people who have continued to ride after a hip replacement.

It is not a case of never riding again, the point to my post was other peoples stories. The surgeon wasn't harsh and said he would be probably ride again. Iam just information gathering at this point. It is not unusual for a new implant to come out of the socket and we just want to make the right decision for the futuree as he will need the right one doing too.

I posted this as I thought someone out there has gone through post op recovery, come out the other side and is riding again and would share their experiances.

Quarabian, thanks for re editing your post,as was beginning to feel a bit under pressure from your replies.

Ruthie try googling the horse and hound forum - I'm sure this topic has been covered there - might be helpful.

This is really encouraging!

The good thing is that my husband's horse is not too wide!

A friend of mine has both hips replaced and still rides and does some pleasure and training rides. One thing she did find though was that her lovely cob was too wide for her after the op, she said it was really uncomfortable and it worried her so she looked around and now has a really lovely TB and is getting on really well with him. She now lets a friends daughter compete the cob so that he didn't feel left out of things. There is most definitely hope after a hip op.
