Hello! I haven't posted on here for quite a while - still trying to keep a low profile and avoid annoying you with my Tobago-babble!

But at least one of the main horse magazines will be publishing this latest Tobago-news, so I thought it might be worthy of a post...

Britain's highest-scoring Sport Horse mare is booked to H Tobago!

Witches Broom, the highest-scoring mare at the SHB(GB) gradings, is booked to be bred to Tobago for 2011!!!

Witches Broom was awarded the incredible, near-perfect score of 9.64 out of 10 at the 2009 gradings.

Imagine! One of the top sport-horse mares in the country, who would be a 'prize catch' for even the very best WB or TB stallions, is to be bred to a PURE-BRED ARAB!!!

I am extremely grateful to her owner Pat Adams for making this rather controversial choice. Quite a few serious sport-horse breeders are coming round to the idea that an infusion of Arab blood would be beneficial - but so far, only a few are innovative and far-sighted enough actually to DO the F1 cross!

And to do it with the top-scoring SHB(GB) mare - and a 'show-Arab' stallion! An exceptionally bold and imaginative choice, for which I hope that Pat will receive the admiration she deserves.

For those who don't know her, here are some details about the famous Witches Broom:

Hi Kate, Great to see you post again! I'm really not surprised in the least at this news, the proof of what Tobago produces is clear to see.

Please don't let a minority stop you posting on here and talking about what is after all your beloved horse! Just like the rest of us do!

Go Tobago babies!

Well, why am I not surprised.....it seems finally that the Anglo Arab is finally beginning to be appreciated as the ultimate competition horse of excellence, in this Country

Witches Broom is a Thoroughbred Mare with a great performance bloodline. Her Owners will not regret choosing an Arabian sire and
breeding a British Anglo Arab. Just cant wait to see the outcome of the mating.....might this be the first Tobago sired Anglo??

We have dedicatedly bred Anglos for several decades and really appreciate the TB/Arab blood as a brilliant performance horse. Unfortunately the British Bred Anglo has not received the promotion it deserves as an all round competition horse.....maybe, just maybe, the times they are a changing

Focus for our Pure Arabians is now starting to promote serious interest, as the ridden Arabian and their amazing capabilities, away from the showring, is beginning to grab Joe public`s notice in open affiliated competition.

Add to the mix...a Thoroughbred capable of flying round a Grand National Course of huge fences....the result has just got to be an Anglo with not only beauty, grace and scope, coupled with extra size
and stamina...need I say more!!

Well done that is really good news that she has chosen Tobago, it might encourage other people to do the same with their sport horses.
We have a Oldenburg Mare very well bred has won money BSJA in the past, we wanted to breed with her at some point, and I thought an Arab stallion would make a good cross and an ideal horse for me later on, I did try looking for a Warmblood x Arab a while back but not many about in this country found a few in the US but they are not cheap.

Thank you everyone! As you can imagine, I am very excited about this 'marriage'!

Tobago has some other top-class fully-graded sport-horse mares in foal to him, and yet more booked for next year - but none quite as famous as Witches Broom!

Fee - I am sorry, my comment about annoying Tobago-babble was meant to be humorous, not churlish. I did babble on over-enthusiastically about him when I bought him (4 years ago now) - I hadn't had a horse for 13 years and was a bit over-excited. It was totally understandable that a few people found this irritating - I don't blame them at all. Just a bit embarrassed at myself - hence the subsequent low profile.

Well said! This really isn't just about Tobago for me - my wider 'mission' (if that doesn't sound too pretentious!) is to help promote the use of Arab blood in sport-horse breeding, and this Tobago/Witches Broom match should encourage other serious sport-horse breeders to do that essential F1 cross!

As you have been doing for decades, of course! I am a long-standing admirer of your Anglos!

ETA - This won't be the first Anglo by Tobago: he had a splendid foal out of a lovely Java Tiger daughter this year (booked for a repeat breeding in 2011).

And there's a fabulous fully-graded SHB(GB) TB mare in foal to him for 2011 - this mare has competed BE, BS and BD and produced BEF First Premium foals by WB stallions.

Thank you! Your mare sounds wonderful - I hope you do breed her to an Arab!

If you like Arab/WB crosses, you might be interested in looking out for Tobago's foal out of this fully-graded Trakehner mare, Holme Park Sunbeam, due next year:

Her pedigree (with another photo of her and her BEF First Premium foal: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/holme+park+sunbeam

And also his 2012 foal from this fully-graded Trakehner mare, Holme Park Venezia (booked to Tobago for 2011):

http://www.volatis.co.uk/venezia.html

Tobago also had a super palomino baby out of a cremello WB mare in 2009, but he was snapped up on the day he was born as a future dressage horse!

katefox....it makes an old Anglo Breeder very happy to know that there are Pure Arab Breeders, who have the foresight to appreciate the use of their treasured stallions, across Sporthorse Mares, to produce our British bred Anglo and Part Bred Sporthorses.

There are now quite a number of Arabian Owners and Sporthorse owners who are seriously looking at the marriage of these bloodlines.....not before time, and long may it continue. Keep up the good work Tobago

Really pleased to read this! Always thought Tobago was a potential sports horse sire supreme! Very nice mare too with a shrewd owner!
I don't think she'll be disappointed.

No, she belongs to Pat Adams - but she was at Zoe's yard, Zoe is Pat's great friend, and it was Zoe who insisted on entering Witches Broom for the grading....so you're very close!

I just wondered as a friend takes her arabs (endurance horses) to Zoe's to use the Spa facilities. Thought Zoe may have been encouraged to use an Arab after seeing other Arabs taking it all in their stride!

Thank you Babs - very generous comments, especially considering you've been doing this for generations! I do realise that breeding a high-class Anglo or PBA sport-horse is not a new thing - it's only that this match is newsworthy because the mare is the famous top-scoring SHB superstar!

Surely ANY owner of a pure-bred stallion would be thrilled to have top sport-horse mares like Witches Broom, Holme Park Venezia, etc booked to their stallion? I'm not sure I deserve any great credit for foresight just for saying 'oooh - yes please!' LOL!

Fantastic for you to get such a good mare, i am pleased to see more people are breeding the Arab/Trakehner crosses, i bred one this year and the mare is infoal again for next year. Sadly when i advertised her on here for sale nobody came to see her and she is a lovely filly so sweet and with this cross will make a fantastic riding horse. Lets hope your fantastic stallion continues to fly the flag for our lovely arab, and you have every right to be pleased as punch, well done.

How exciting, you are right to be elated at the breeding. We have a little excitement gently cooking in our yard at the moment i thought i'd share on this thread. Our TB mare is by the wonderful gunner B and is sister to red marauder, the 2001 grand national winner. She is in foal for 2011 to Rowena Bertram's fabulous stallion Marcus Aurelius. We chose marcus for many reasons, not least his performance record. He is nasta performance tested and has competed successfully in endurance, dressage, show jumping and in 2009 began eventing, and then took to the show ring this year achieving 4th at HOYS. We are so excited about this foal we can barely breath.
Like many of you we adore the anglo and would love to see them gaining popularity. They are indeed the ultimate sport horse.
Our other TB mare is empty this time, having produced our super colt by ssinsation in 2009 who was 1st at BNFOY. 1st midland arab festival, sadly missed nationals due to transport probs. and 2nd at cherif. She is booked to tobago's half brother Patros HB next year so as you can see we strongly believe in the Anglo, and although things are difficult for all at the moment i do so hope, as Babs said, the times are changing.
On the subject of WB x arab. Our 2008 foal out of TB mare was a stunning filly by Treliver decanter (Dimaggio) We actually sold her to a super home, but we seriously considered keeping her and putting her to an arab stallion, and i think it is something we will do in the future.
What excitement lies ahead. I cant wait for the time when some arabian blood runs through the veins of britains top sporting horses and we manage to shake off the awful opinions many people hold of this superb breed, and realise they are so much more than a pretty face.

That's wonderful news, Kate! As you can see from my signature pics, I'm a BIG Tobago fan (in more ways than one, as Alkara Cassino, aka Chips, out of Karen Caley's Rose Aboud is currently standing 14.3hh at 17 months) and is stunning!

We only breed one foal each year now as we are semi retired. Our many years of breeding has proved the most popular all round performance Anglo is 75% TB x 25% Arab, though perhaps a little more percentage of Arab for the showring

our 2008 and 2009 foals are below

SUNRAY STEPASIDE is sired by our Anglo Stallion Sunray Saristocrat and his Dam is our Anglo Sunray Swansong He is 34.38% Arab x 66.62% Thoroughbred Photo at AHS Nationals 2009 as yearling He will mature at 15.2hh/15.3hh

SUNRAY SHOWTIME is also sired by Saristocrat and out of our Thoroughbred mare Sunray Sheer Silk he is 21.50% Arab x 79.50% TB
photo as yearling at BAHPAC 2010 He is a huge 15.3 at 18 months old

These boys are typical of our stamp of Anglo and the type to make versatile Show/all round competition horses

Shall look forward to seeing Tobago`s Anglo and Part Bred offspring
