Has anyone else find it near impossible to get a small enough bit. ros had an unusually small mouth, but see trying to get the bit you want in the size you want is impossible . I have been searching for months to get a 4 inch bit in a straight bar, hanging cheek snaffle with no avail they mainly start at 11.5cm. tonight though i was at the saddlery was gonna get them to order me a 10.5cm bit when i spotted on there bit stand a 10cm(4") mullen mouth steel d ring, with full size d rings so thought i would give it a go if it didn't fit they said i could take it back. It fitted with about a 1/4 inch to spare. So i took him out and rode him and well we no longer had a girrafe, we did have a lot of bad tempered head shaking and a few threatens to rear(but didn't) and a couple of bucks when i wouldn't let him nap lol. but in general there was a huge improvement all round, so Im gonna Get him another 16inch saddle 17inch is far too long on his back and start doing alot of long reigning and restart him basically, hes never had the schooling he needs and as hes been checked over hes not in pain, i suppose it must be bad manners and bout time at 11yo they were sorted lol. Gonna aim for a walk trot dressage test by end december/january, and start jumping him again when hes flatworks sorted.

I have a Sprenger RS Dynamic 4.5 inches which I got off ebay. Found it a real problem finding much else that suited. What do pony's use, as surely they need small bits too. Everyone I spoke to, said I couldn't need anything smaller than a 5".
Saddle wise, we are just about to get our saddle which is a Wow on a 16" tree with a 17" seat. Fingers crossed it works out as it should.

Guys have a look on the Horse Bit Bank - they have a 'Pony Bit' range with sizes staring from 3 1/2 inches AND you can take bits on trial, so easy to send back and swap around without wasting loads of money 
Also there is a 16.5 inch Dressage Saddle for sale on the British Dressage website - they don't come up often second hand! |

| thanks pasha i contacted the bit bank with what i wanted and they said they couldn't get it as smallest they did in the bit i wanted was 11.5cm. and the 10cm(4inch) i got him is still a little roomy. Beckyboodle i was thinking exactly the same about the smaller ponies, what do they wear lol. I think the problem with ponies is they have a limited range and most shetlands ect have a small rubber mullen mouth loose ring, what we would use for the youngsters inhand as there soft. Maybe we should start our own range of bits for the arabs smaller mouths lol. |

yes I have very small arabian ponies.. & find it very hard to find anything that fits from girths to bits to saddles & bridles
luckily my riding mare I ride in a rope headstall I made myself. My Stallion I ride in a halter at home & a synthetic racing bridle I was able to put extra holes in to make it fit although the browband is a bit big & I'm in the process of trying to replace that.. & I use a tom thumb snaffle bit, which by some miracle I found his size which is like 3 & 1/4 or something like that.. would have to measure it again..
as far as my mare goes.. I recently took her to an event where they specified horses had to be ridden in a bridle.. needless to say I wont be going to one of their events again.. what a backwards way of doing things.. I had mouthed my girl when she was a youngster, but had never needed to ride her in a bit.. (I ride with 1 rein using a rope headstall) so I remouthed her in the months leading up & struggled to find a bit she would accept & was the right size. Ended up in a pony stallion curb bit.
yes I ask the saddleries all the time what happens when a person with a childs pony walks in here looking for a bit or a girth to fit, I have to special order absolutely everything.. I haven't walked into a saddlery once & been able to buy something straight off the shelf..
what a great idea to make your own range of bits to fit the smaller horse mouth..!!
hhmm forgot to mention I ride my stallion in an old (in saying old it was old when my mum got it over 20 years ago) County 16.5 inch dressage saddle.. has to be the most comfortable thing I have ever ridden in. & at least it fits the boy..
