What's your opinion of Russian arabs? Which stallions are the best today? I must say I really love Kubinec... He is a great sire. Here's one of he
is not so famous son, but who is really an excellent producer as well as a gorgeous stallion. He is out of a Kilimandscharo-daughter. http://www.leilak.net/jalostusoriit/colorado.html

Well, I love the Russians surprisingly enough!

I'm told if I want to keep my hoped for future foal from Po straight Russian I must ensure the stallion is straight Russian too. It's very tempting I must admit with the uncertainty around Tersk/Holland/Russian breeding. I know Jude at Auchmillan will keep the flag flying though

I hope it's ok to mention a stallion, and he is advertised on here, but I always love the look of Plumbum but hear so little of him. Anyone know him?

Fee

PS Love the Kubinec son

Edited to say I just found Plum's site and I really love this stallion! I'll need to ask Egbert what she thinks on the match!

I LOVE Russians too, they completely LIFT your heart on any day of the week We seem to have collected quite a few "straight Russian" females here There are wonderful straight Russians standing at stud in UK
Karat, Plumbum, Palubnik, Narim, Morjak,Piligrim and of course the wonderful Vodolej to name a few

Along with many other Russian boys standing at stud in Europe - so easily available by AI

Fee: I'm importing Colorados son to the UK this spring who is also grandson to my El Thay Shah Talal. He is as gorgeous as daddy Colorado there. And Colorado is an image of Kubinec and has HUGE trot.

Fee I agree - Plumbum is a super stallion, and he's out there competing in dressage against other breeds, as well as doing ridden showing!

Don't forget the new kid on the block, Picasso Kossack (Kubinec x Popova). Everything we had hoped for and more.

Hi all

Could one of you Russian devotees explain how a horse can be called
"Straight Russian" when it has Aswan (Straight Egyptian") in its pedigree. Similarly the Polish with their frequent infusions of other blood, most recently also "Straight Egyptian" would hardly seem straight anything anymore.
Surely a more accurate terminology would be "Russian Type" or "Polish Type"? Obviously all terminology is man made so they can be called anything but some sort of logic would be nice!!

Alan how could I have forgotten Picasso Kossack and doesn't he look absolutely splendid

Centaur I can see where you are coming from and can't comment on other "straights".

My view of "straight Russian" is a horse with sire and dam bred either at Tersk Stud or from direct descendants of those bred at Tersk stud.

The Russians, with a tradition of horse breeding handed down from father to son through generations, have shown a remarkable ability to blend lines and breed excellence resulting in horses that are famous worldwide in hand and under saddle.

The selection process in Russia has always been extremely strict for example only one stallion and 6 mares have lines today from the importation of 25 horses from Crabbet Park. The evaluation process, done by a committee, measures height of withers, length of body, girth of chest and cannon bone, and gives scores for parentage, measurements, conformation, performance and quality of descendants. Horses are evaluated as foals, at weaning, and then every year following.

Sadly it seems Tersk has been sold, altho still continuing to breed horses under new ownership. I feel honoured to have a selection of Tersk bred mares here, along with their "straight" and "blended" offspring

Wow, hasn't Picasso grown up, how old is he now?

Palubnik, what a superstar, i fell in love with him when he was presented at Judith's open day, a temperament and looks to die for, could easily have smuggled him out but think Ronnie and Jane would have noticed, reminded me of my Russian boy - Barabinsk.

I love the Russian arabian - my stud name sort of gives it away as well - Tzarina Arabians

Jude,

Yes, he's quite a looker and has a fabulous, fine, lustrous coat. He even manages to keep his white bits reasonably clean, even though he isn't rugged.

Tina,
Picasso is two this year but he was a June foal so much younger than most of his contemporaries. He's got the sweetest temperament too as well as being a babe magnet.

Hi Alan/Performance Arabians, do you have more pics of Picasso, he looks quite something!

If you look on my site I had a most beautiful TBx (biased of course!) and I had hoped one day to make her a mum. I had selected and hoped for one of your boys for the dad! This of course was a few years ago now and I never got to the stage of contacting you. You do have lovely horses...sorry I digress..

I would love to see more pics of Picasso if you have them!

Pintoarabian, remember seeing Picasso as a baby trotting round the ring with his mum at Robbie's, he sure has grown up a handsome boy

We have got the 'russian bug' too. We love 'Balaton's' offspring. I would have loved to see him in the flesh.
I possess a 'Balaton' daughter (BS Emira) and grand daughter 'Mazayah'.
Both lovely big moving powerful mares.

What's not to love about the Russian Arabians?

They have spectacular movement - strong, correct conformation - beauty by the bucket - and a long history of selection for performance!

When I see a horse that really grips me by the heart, stops my breath, and for a moment lifts me out of time - 9 times out of ten it is a Russian!!

My girl Artizana Pavlova is by Peleng and out of Faery Rose - she combines Russian and English/Polish lines and she is due in May to the stallion Elat (Abhat x Eleni) who is 12/16th Russian - the rest English and a dash of Polish. I think it will be a smashing combination and can't wait to see the result. The foal won't be mine as she is on breeding loan to a good friend, but I couldn't be more excited if it was to be my own

I think that is a very good question! Somebody on here a while ago was saying that their 'Straight Egyptians' were 30% Crabbet! Quite a lot of 'Straight Russians' have a similar amount of Egyptian blood (through Aswan)... And both the Russians and Poles have for a while now been using a lot of 'international' lines - e.g. the Russians leased El Amin, by Psytadel; the Poles are using Gazal and Marwan al Shaqab, and so on.

It seems to me that these national labels perhaps don't mean all that much any more - which is not necessarily a bad thing: surely we should be trying just to breed the best possible horses, without getting too hung up on their national origins? This often seems to mean blending the wonderful qualities of the different national types.

Mind you - looking at Jingo's beautiful Russians - and some of the others mentioned here such as Palubnik, Narim and Piligrim - it's hard to see how they could be 'improved'!
