Baz gets little lumps under his jaw line like little cotton wool buds, tonight when i brought him in he looks like he has mumps his throat and cheecks were HUGE, panic head me, we have a new horse on the yard phoned the vet to see if anything is going round, NO, he said sounds like grass lumps due to the grass changing at the mo. I need to know more, WHY WHAT HOW etc

their glands puff up a bit when the temp and weather changes affect the grass chemistry - it can look quite bad on some so I bet you're not the first person to panic!!

Kharidian had huge, hard glands (?parotid?) the size of my fist yesterday; he's never had them in previous years but other horses he grazes with have had them, so I didn't worry and he was not "unwell" so we hacked out as usual.

I was not aware that they were due to changes in the grass chemistry; I'd assumed he'd been grazing on something different.

My philosophy with lumps & bumps is that if there's a matching pair it's probably nothing to worry about!
