HI, Got Baz in a 4 1/2in loose ring french link, i thought it was looking too small for him, but a girl has told me its to wide for him, to demonstrate she pulled the ring to one side through his mouth and it came through about a good inch before the ring on the other side stopped it, (although seemed a bit harsh to me and i wouldn't use my hands like that if i was ridding?)

We are just re-bitting and doing ground work at mo.

I am in the process of bit sizing for Eba. I had borrowed a 5" training bit which I was told looked fine, but then I noticed that it seemed to hang down a little in the middle but it was hard to get her to hold her mouth open in a natural manner - obviously! I then bought a bit fit so I could ensure I had the right size before I invested in a Sprenger bit, and was amazed when it measured only 4". All the bit people I have spoken to have said it can't be right, horses don't have 4" mouths. I do think I need to do it again as I think I may not have had it high enough, but expect that to only come up at 4 1/2" max. I also have just read an article that said that something like 65% of the bits judges checked at shows were the wrong size?????!!!!

I know saddles are different, but I sometimes find it mad we get professionals to measure saddles but not bridles and bits, when they can have as much impact if they are wrongly fitted.

Hi

My lads 4 1/4" - very hard size to get hold of, I've only found one make that do a 1/4 size - think it's Shires (will need to check). 4" would be too tight and my other bit is 4 1/2" is slightly too long.

Went to a sales once where someone was bidding for the same size bit - they wanted it for a shetland! lol

I think it seems to be a bit of a vague issue!

It certainly sounds like the girl was excessive though; you don't need to do that to check the fit! and like you say you wouldn't do that in riding!

My Eva has a 4" mouth; she uses an eggbut and it fits snugly but she likes it to not move. If I had a loose ring I would have a 1/4 or 1/2 inch extra to ensure it didn't pinch (1/2 inch so I could put rubbers on). (I'm currently trying to find the ideal bit for her, but that's another post...)

to check the fit you could just hold it carefully to check it's level (link not hanging down in the mouth) and see if there's about a 1/4 inch either side of her lips before the rings. Also if he's happy in it then there's no worries; he'll let you know if he has a problem. Each horse is different and we should be careful of putting them in boxes!
