One of our mares has to go to Rossdales soon to (possibly) have a cyst in the sinus removed. Has anyone else had to have this sort of operation done on their horse? I am really wondering about the after care she will need, and what to expect if she has to have it done?

A Welsh D / TB mare we bred and sold as backed 5yr old had a small one up her nostril - our vet looked at it and said it was round and not worrying - see how she was when we started work - it wasn't very high up and only very occassionally would she sort of hum if she was puffing and facing the right way across the breeze! The folk who bought her had it removed to show her but she didn't have long off work - I guess it depends where it is and how accessible it is

If this is a cyst it must be right inside her sinus, as it shows up on x ray. She has been out of work now for 2 months plus, and has a really horrid snotty nose on one side. If she is in work she quickly loses all condition and really struggles with her breathing. I hope that the op will sort this out as there's not much else to be done with her! I haven't had to do any nursing care for a while, so any tips for that will be much appreciated.

Crikey, that sounds uncomfortable.
I think that you're going to need to speak to the operating vet/surgeon about aftercare as it seems quite a unique case.
Make sure you're comfortable with what to look for as normal and what to consider warning signs eg. bleeding from the nostrils etc. |

I will be making very sure what we need to be looking out for, luckily our own vets are fantastic, and I can phone them in a panic at any time without them grumbling!
It's quite daunting before the operation, but hopefully it will help her to get well again, so we don't mind going through it. As it stands we don't really want to do anything with her in case it makes her worse, and having a horse with so much trouble breathing when they're in work is very worrying. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Hi my boy has had a terrible time lately which at first they treated him with just a sinus infection he has had four operations on his face he also went to rossdales as my old vet didnt know what was causing it It ended up being his tooth!
I am going to write a post soon about it with pics if you want to pm me i will tell you more |

Ah, thats very interesting, as Rosie was looked at on monday, and they checked her teeth with some special camera or something, and one of her back teeth had an infection in it. They took the tooth out and have operated on the sinus as well to clean out the plug of gunk that had completely blocked it. I'm quite pleased that they are now keeping her for 10 days, as I feel this will give her the best chance possible.
I will pm you about the after care though!
