I recently bought a Garmin Foretrex 101 (just to get an idea of my hacking distances) and it worked fine for a couple of months.

However, now it will not "acquire satellites" - it spends ages trying and then asks if I am indoors (no), have I travelled hundreds of miles since the last time I used it (no) and then asks if the date is correct (yes), and then it tries again....with no luck.

Is there any way I can reset the unit (I've read the manual but there's no troubleshooting section) or is it dead? All ideas gratefully awaited!

Have you changed the batteries Do thety need changing.

The manual says that flat batteries when full charged need longer to pick up the signal.

Pauline,
Thanks for your suggestion. I use rechargable lithium batteries and I had been using these and recharged them several times before I got the problem - there are three/four bars shown (four being fully charged) but maybe I'll try normal alkaline batteries again to see if this solves the problem.

Thanks,
Caryn

Good point, Dot. However it didn't have a USB-type lead (or any other lead) to connect to a computer....I could try to buy one on ebay but I may be throwing good money after bad if it's broken but if I can get one for a few pounds it my be worth it.

Well.......would you believe it?! I thought I'd try saying "yes" when it asked if I'd travelled hundreds of miles since the last time I turned it on (I haven't been further than 10 miles as the crow flies)........and hey presto it works again. Just as well that I was beaten in an e-bay auction for a replacement yesterday.

There's nowt so queer as gadgets!
