Hi Mel........yes we have used them for years....would not be without one. Our original was a Newmarket Foaling Alarm, over £1000 and never let us down...could go to bed, and when the mare started to foal, the alarm screamed off at the side of your bed even the heaviest sleeper, is awakenend!!

They work on the principle of, when the cervix is fully dilated the mare`s temperature rises slightly, the alarm is triggered. (there is no sound on the sensor fitted on the mare...which sits on a neckstrap, on her chest) the neckstrap is connected to a surcingle. We bought a soft leather with padded wither surcingle, as it will not dislodge or swing round if the mare rubs vigorously, when in later stages of labour.

If you know your mare and she stays cool (doesn`t sweat or steam) then there are about ten different setting to adjust. We have tested it in all four corners of our twelve acres (using a slightly damp cloth, and the alarm has always triggered. However, our mares are always stabled, when near to foaling.

Foaling alarms are very much cheaper now...we purchased a new one from The Wyke of Shifnal (Telford) a couple of years ago for about £350 or thereabouts Excellent, but you have to get the setting right, but still better a false alarm, than miss being there...just in case !!

P.S. The Wyke do hire them out, dont know how much, but still cheaper to buy, if you have a number of mares to foal, and they do last for years just need a good service occasionally.

I know the person who leased 2 of my mares had a foaling alarm .
i do not know if she used it though as one mare she was with all through labour so she may not of needed it, with and the other mare she found the foal dead in the morning, if she had the foal alarm on it didnt work.
They are not reliable enough to totally relie on them, you do need to check on them through out ,i think the alarm works on the mares temperature it raises as she goes into labour.
I have only had that experience, i had the horses 5 miles away and thought it would be good to have but the distance was to great.

Hi azraa. Have used Foaling Alarms for very many years, in conjuction with CCTV. If correctly fitted and the sensor set at the right sensitivity for individual mares (as all react differently when in later labour stages) the alarm has never let us down. Just as the Mares` waters break, we are very loudly warned. There is no sound on the mare`s sensor. When alarmed that foalie is on the way, we just have time to remove the alarm, before she goes down to foal.

We have bred in excess of 100 foals, over the years and, hand on heart, we have lost only one foaling mare (Rupture of the Uterine Broad Ligament, which is fatal) the foal was saved Sunray Soloist (1984) We have never lost a homebred foal, including twin fillies (1979) We also take Mares to foal down and only lost one foal (sadly, unsaveable and had to be PTS)

We are justifiably proud of our foaling record but OMG we will now worry silly that we may have put a jinx on future foalings, due to boasting sincerely hope not.

From my own experience, can only highly recommend Foaling Alarms. Along with CCTV 24/7 more peace of mind, less nights up staring at CCTV screen, watching a mare who looks well in labour, who then by early dawn, decides to wait until another night

Happy Days........

hi babs,
That is good and you should be proud, foaling is a very worrying time. I do not know if the mares i leased out did actually have the foaling alarm on, one would presume that if you had gone to the trouble of buying or hiring a alarm one would actually use it.
The chances of the alarm not working is extrememly low it would seem.
would you pm on the firms to rent or buy from please as i have one mare back home and due to foal in a few months.

thank you,

karen.

Hi Azraa..The Foaling Alarms can be purchased from Horse Requisites Newmarket Ltd., on line www.Horserequisites.co.uk Tel: 01638 661562
Don`t think they hire them out (but much prefer their alarm. £493.50
The Wyke of Shifnal sell Foaling Alarms and also hire them out, havn`t got their phone number but they are in Telford, Shropshire.

Think they actually make their own brand of Foaling Alarm. IMO the Newmarket one is far superior. Hope this helps.
